12 —The Daily Collegian Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1986 Dream Continued from Page 11 Wishful thinking. On first and 10 at the 26. I drop back and fire a pass intended for Eric Hamilton. I have to unload quickly because coming at me like the 5:15 Special is Bennett. In one fell swoop, he slams me to the artifi cal surface. The ball falls like a wounded duck, incomplete. On second and 10 from the 26,1 roll out and find Brian Siverling cutting over the middle. The completion gains 15 yards to the Penn State 41 and I call my first time out. There’s 1:36 remaining. After the time out, I call two plays in the huddle and on first and 10, I drop a screen to Smith, but Alabama reads the play well and stops the fullback after a five-yard gain. I huddle-up quickly and roll left, where I spot Dozier open on the left sideline. I toss a lousy pass and overthrow D.J. by a mile. ' Time to re-group because it’s third and five and Alabama is coming with everyone except Ray Perkins. I look at Bennett, who winks and flashes a menacing grin at me. Alabama flinches, a defensive end crosses the line of scrimmage and Penn State gets a first down at its own 46. There’s now 1:11 remaining and I’ve got 'to move the ball down the field. I drop back and see Hamilton double-covered. I pump fake to him and find Roundtree cutting across the middle. I fire the pass and Roundtree makes a diving grab. Gain of 17 and Penn State marches into Alabama territory at the Crimson Tide 37.1 call the second time-out. Afterwards, a draw to Dozier gains seven to the 30. On second down, I fade back and, under heavy pressure, fail to get the ball loose. I crumble under the Tide pressure and get sacked for a loss of six on the play. I’m forced to take the final timeout with 40 seconds left. THE ADVERTISING CLUB proudly presents s x ' Toni Trioanello Marty Weitzman Ann Wietzman • 0 E I go over to the sidelines where Head Coach Joe Paterno is livid. He begins to holler at me in words I’ve never heard of. I still get the message and, with no timeouts, go out on the field. It’s third and 9 from the Alabama 36. I drop back and find a wide open Dozier coming out of the backfield. I hit D.J. at the 28, and on sheer athletic ability, he lunges for a first down. I hurry up the offense and throw a quick sideline pattern to Hamilton, who steps out at the 19. There’s now 23 seconds left. From the 19,1 drop back looking for a receiver, but with no one open I scramble out of the pocket and race for the sidelines. As I’m just about to reach the sidelines, Bennett clocks me. I get up slowly, woozy from the hit. The team doctors come over to me and check to see if I’m coherent. “Where are you?,” trainer Jerry Slagle says. “Auntie M, Auntie M, where’s Toto?,’’ I say. “You’re not going to hurt my Toto, you, you . . . witch.” “How many fingers am I holding up,” Slagle says. “Eleven,” I reply “Who are you?” “Fernando Lamas.” Finally, I awake from the daze. I tell Slagle he’s going to need a strait jacket to take me out of the game. There are 15 seconds left and the ball’s on the Alabama 9. On first and goal from the nine, I fake a handoff to D.J. and roll right. I find an opening; but Steve Smith is wide open at the five. I rifle a bullet to Smith, who catches it at the five and gets out of bounds at the four. Seven seconds tick off the clock. Meanwhile, I have the unenviable task of driving right into the Alabama student section. Instead of marsh mallows, they throw mangos. • 0 E • 0 E THE TAXI ROLLS ON • 0 E • 0 E • 0 E • 0 E • 0 E •0E e 0 E • 0 E It’s second down at the 4, time for two more plays. I take the snap from Keith Radecic and loft a spiral to wards the right corner of the end zone. Hamilton leaps up, but the Alabama defender bats the ball away. Incomplete. There are three seconds remaining. Last play of the game. I’m thinking this is what separates the men from the boys, the broccoli from the cauli flower. I tell the offense in the huddle that our destiny lies here. We’re only four yards away from daylight. I call the play myself a quarterback draw. “What?” yells Dan Morgan, “that’s never going to work.” “Shut up," I say, trying to stop myself at full breath because I just told a 6-6, 272-pound offensive guard to shut up. “It’s going to work.” We break from the huddle and approach the line of scrimmage. The crowd stands as one, cheering their Crimson Tide on. I take the snap from center, trot three paces back and then start put ting it in high gear towards the end zone. I see an opening, the goal line is but three yards away. I lunge and... "Touchdown,” yells ABC’s Keith Jackson. “Whatta gutty call,” says Frank Broyles, who’s still working for ABC' (again, it’s my dream, I make the rules). As I leave the field, I see Bennett with his head hanging low. I give him a wink, start laughing and then run for the locker room because he’s chasing my ass down the field. I wake up exhiliarated and imagine Bennett standing in the doorway yel ling “I’ll get you, Loder . . . and your little dog, too.” Chris Loder is a senior majoring in journalism and a sportswriter for The Daily Collegian. • 0 E • 0 E • 0 E • 0 E • 0 E iKfeRNtffiONAL IllM V«6K Ljiii i.i-i.i 11 ii 1111111 i.i i.m i 1 “Best supense movie of the year” Jue 21 —Mystery Writers of America directed by Costa-Gavras starring Yves Montand and Irene Papas ** Wed. 22 NJANGAAN , African Movie gOT . .. ... —the story of an enslaved boy, purportedly directed by Manama kept to be taught the Koran Johnson Traore lriur. 2jJ PI 017 THI7 —originally banned in Bolivia DbVW Wr 111 L exotic picture of the daily life of the />AMI\AH Quethean Indians account of an (J.S. imposed directed by Jorge Sanjines sterilization program WeftfWNAC E|k 8:00 pm FREE Admission fcut&ttx Oct. 21,22,23 HUB ASSEMBLY HALL coudul • 0 E HOW FAR WILL YOUR TALENT TAKE YOU? TIME The College Achievement Awards King Buddy speaks: Ryan dubs Cunningham Eagles By RALPH BERNSTEIN AP Sports Writer PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Eagles Coach Buddy Ryan elevated Randall Cunning ham to the No. 2 quarterback job yesterday, but emphasized that Ron Jaworski should feel se cure. Ryan, at his weekly Monday news conference, said Jaworski will start Sunday against the San Diego Chargers if he has regained feeling in two fingers on his throwing hand. The injury, which he suffered a week ago against the Giants, kept him from starting Sunday. If Jaworski isn’t healthy, second-year quar terback Randall Cunningham gets the job, and Matt Cavanaugh drops from backup to third string, Ryan said. Ryan said Cunningham did a good job Sunday in the Eagles’ 17-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. “But I think Jaworski will be able to play,” he said. Ryan emphasized that Cunningham wasn’t ready to leap over Jaworski for the No. 1 job. “You guys (media) try to rush him too quick,” said the coach. The Eagles collected just 62 yards total offense in the first half, 59 rushing and 3 passing. Cunningham started the second half trailing 7- 0, led a drive to tie the score, and, after Dallas regained the lead, 14-7, directed another scoring move to tie it at 14. He scored on a 14-yard scramble and threw a 15-yard TD pass to Mike Quick. He completed eight of 15 for 127 yards. Ryan made a point of explaining that Dallas’ 10 sacks were not the fault of the offensive line alone. “They were caused by formation problems, holding the ball too long. You know you can only hold that thing so long. Then you have to throw it away. Also not reading the coverage right, not getting rid of it on the blitz,” he said. Ryan blamed fullback Mike Haddix for one sack, tackle Leonard Mitchell for a half, guard Ron Baker for two, wide receiver Kenny Jackson for one, Cavanaugh for two and Cunningham for 3M2. Ryan said Cunningham has matured since the start of the season. SUBI€T ROOMS UJRNTCD BUYING, GOLD CLASS rings, Jewelry, Diamonds, coins, neck laces, bracelets, etc. Anything Gold or Silver! 238-5732. He’s coining along. He's going to be a hell of a quarterback. “Anytime you have a young quarterback, you have to bring him along slow. If you throw him to the dogs, you’re going to set him back. So what we’re doing is bringing him along. “We think he’s progressing great. I think he’s right on schedule. He’s the quarterback of the future,” he said. The coach criticized the defense as inconsis tent. “The thing about our defense is that we haven’t scored on defense in seven games. We only average l'/z turnovers a game, which is pathetic. We’re just not getting it done like we should be,” he said. Ryan criticized Mitchell for a mistake that the coach said cost a long field goal. He said rookie center Matt Darwin’s snaps on field goals were “lousy.” Ryan also said the special teams have failed to give the teams any big plays. “You can see that if we expect to be a winning football team, all these things have to be cor rected .” FOUND IN HUB Billiard Room- RAY ANTHONY AND Assoc: WAITER, WAITRESS WANTED, one high school class ring. After a second-place finish last weekend at the Syracuse Cross Country Classic, the Penn State coach showed concern. With the Atlantic 10 playoffs com ing up Saturday, Groves said his team has its work cut out for it. "We better get our team together in the back end of the group or we’ll get smashed," he said. Bucknell won the weekend meet with 31 points, followed by the Lions with 42 and the University of Western Ontario with 92. Syracuse had 107 points, while Millersville had 137 and the Mohawk Valley Cross Country Club had 157 to round out the scoring. Penn State All-American Eric Car ter won the 5.2 mile race in 26:49, establishing a record at the Drumlins Golf Course.
