6—The Daily Collegian Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1956 Centre Hall's fair in 112th year By W.T. HOLLAND Collegian Staff Writer Mike Musser, a University senior in agricultural educa tion wrestled with sheep No. 85 the sheep without a name because Musser said he has too many to keep track of. "Woolite, dish soap, Tide. . . they all do the same thing. I use Pine Sol to cut the lanolin in the wool," Musser said and patted the coat of the protesting No. 85, who was later shown to judges yesterday afternoon. More than 2,000 families have joined the Mussers for six days in tents and trailers parked at Grange Park in Centre Hall, staying close to the livestock shows, carnival food, and country music that makes up the 112-year-old Grange Fair. The fair opened Aug. 22 and closes tomor row night. Musser and his parents, all of Bellefonte, have been attending the annual fair for the past 50 years. "It all originally started in Penn's Woods as a picnic held between some farmers and their families," said Charles Richard of Huntingdon County, who was 25 years old when he attended pis first Grange Fair 20 years ago. Over the years, the fair has progressed into an encamp ment lasting 10 days, Richard added. Tents were erected and cookstoves were shared between mothers of four families during earlier fair years. "For a lot of these families this is their only time of the year to rest and relax. It is a vacation to look forward that doesn't cost a lot of money," Richard added. A visitor to the fairgrounds yesterday would have seen that more than 900 families still come from all over Centre County and around the country to live inches apart in this tent community. However, now the tents resemble small condominiums, since some residents bring modern conveniences such as televisions, hairdryers and micro waves. Shower and bath facilities, dining areas, and children's recreation rooms are maintained throughout the week. Tomorrow night's grandstand performance is expected to include Tommy James and the Shondells.
