"Anytime you don't get clob
bered by management, you win,"
said Frank Maxwell, president of
the American Federation of Tele
vision and Radio Artists.
Carol Akiyama, senior vice
president of the 114-member Alli
ance of Motion Picture and Tele
vision Producers, said "the
alliance is pleased with the tenta
tive package "
The Western region boards of
the Screen Actors Guild and AF
TRA approved the tentative pact
after meeting for several hours
Saturday afternoon. Eastern re
gion boards meet today in New
York.
If the union had struck, it would
have postponed the upcoming tele
vision season and motion picture
production and could have cost the
entertainment industry millions of
dollars, industry officials said.
A 10-week SAG-AFTRA walkout
in 1980 cost the industry an esti
mated $4O million and delayed the
Television actors' minimum
wage of $361 a day will go up 5
percent immediately and another
5 percent Jan. 1, 1988. The unions
had been seeking a 22 percent
raise; the producers initially of
fered 9 percent
The unions scuttled several de
mands by producers that would
have changed the formula used to
determine residual pay for reruns,
Maxwell said. But the unions lost
on a major point: the formula used
to calculate payments from video
cassette sales was not increased
substantially.
Actors now receive 3.6 percent
of the producers' gross receipts on
tape sales. The unions wanted the
same percentage of the distribu
tors' gross receipts a much
larger amount.
But they agreed to a $3 million
lump-sum payment and to an in
crease in their share of the produc
ers' gross. Actors will receive 4.5
percent on the first $1 million of
sales and 5.4 percent on additional
sales.
The movie begins with the rescue of
OffiCer Ripley, who has been floating
around in a spaceship 57 years. After
she's revived from her cocoon-like
sleep, Ripley wants to forget those
dang aliens and get on with her life.
Yet, less than a half-hour into the
movie, she's back in space again,
heading towards another alien con
frontation.
While Ripley was snoozing out in
space, a colony of about 60 families
has inhabited the alien planet. Now
they've loS't contact with the mother
ship. Ripley, along with a crew of
smart-ass Marines, is sent to investi
gate.
What they find on the planet is no
longer a human colony, but a nesting
arena for the blood-sucking crea-
Ultimately, it's not muscles nor
machinery that defeat the aliens, but
cunning, courage, endurance and
love. As Ripley, Sigourney Weaver
digs into her resovoir of strength,
finds these inner resources and
emerges a winner. By her determin
ation to survive and conquer, she
Sigourney Weaver is pictured with three of her Aliens costars: Michael Biehn
Paxton as Hudson.
overcomes her vulnerabilities and
proves herself as the ultimate role
model for women today.
In most current movies, women
cringe in the corner while they watch
men do the dirty work. But in Aliens,
Ripley has no one to lean on but
herself. Although she may be scared
or doubt herself, she never backs
down to anyone or anything.
What makes Ripley's character so
powerful is Weaver's portrayal. As
an actress, she's not only convincing
she's entrancing. All the movie's
wonderful special effects aren't as
impressive as the range of emotion
Weaver can express on her classical
ly beautiful face. Whether she's calm
ing a frightened child or fighting face
to-face with the mother alien, she
attracts audience sympathy like a
magnet, so we experience her feel
ings. When she sweats with cold fear,
we sweat right along with her.
But no matter how wonderful the
star, any movie would crumble with
out a strong supporting cast. Fortu
nately, Aliens provides one. Carrie
Henn is convincing as Newt, a little
girl who survives her camp's destruc
tion and becomes a daughter-like
figure to Ripley.
The colorful crew of Marines pro
vide much of the comic relief desper
ately needed in a movie this intense.
The dialogue, which is concise with
out being sparse, shows a sharp wit at
work. Especially funny is Hudson
(Bill Paxton), a tough marine that
turns to mush at his first alien en
counter. And Paul Reiser as Burke,
the sleazy company executive who
would sell his soul to the devil (or an
alien?), succeeds in making us thor
oughly despise him
As for the aliens they're nasty,
all right.' Thanks to an $lB million
budget, the creatures as well as the
DEM
setting are authentically unsettling.
This is a movie that shows its money
value.
But Aliens doesn't merely rely on
special effects to frighten the viewer.
Weaver may be the hero on screen,
but director James Cameron is the
star behind the big picture. He looks
into our hearts, sees what will scare
us, and then sets the scene with the
right setting, the right camera shot or
the right moment for a alien to po
unce its next victim. He creates a
claustrophobic, paranoid atmosphere
that leaves the audience wobbling on
shaky knees.
Perhaps the film's biggest flaw is
that it expects us to believe too much
that Ripley could be so courageous
and so moral, and that she could even
survive such an ordeal. But who
minds a little stretch of the imagina
tion, when what's stretching it is so
good?
