Moore bagged as
Oakland manager
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jackie
Moore has been fired as manager of
the Oakland A’s and Jeff Newman
has been named interim manager, a
team official said yesterday.
“The change is immediate. Jeff
Newman is the interim manager,”
Mickey Morabito, A’s public relations
director, told The Associated Press.
Moore took over the A’s in May,
1984. The A’s have lost 31 of their last
44 games. Moore was dismissed two
days after the A’s had stopped a
string of 15 consecutive road losses by
beating Kansas City Tuesday night
four short of the league record.
But Oakland stumbled again in
dropping a 5-4 decision. Wednesday to
the Royals. The game was tied 4-4 in
the top of the ninth when pinch-run
ner Ricky Peters thinking the
bases were loaded was caught off
third when he strolled home on a walk
to Jose Canseco.
The A’s were 29-44, tied for last, 11
games back of California in the
American League West going into
last night’s game against Kansas
City.
Moore became the fourth manager
to be fired this season. He joined
Chuck Cottier of Seattle, Jim Frey of
the Chicago Cubs and Tony La Russa
of the Chicago White Sox.
Moore was named manager of the
A’s on May 24,1984 after Steve Boros
was dismissed.

A Chicago newspaper had reported
that La Russa was being considered
as a replacement for Moore. A’s
General Manager Sandy Alderson
said earlier yesterday that he had not
“talked to anyone regarding pur
management situation.”
“I haven’t heard anything, other
than I’m being mentioned (as a possi
ble successor) in the press,” La Rus
sa said via telephone from his
Sarasota, Fla. home yesterday. “I’ve
learned not to assume anything.
“I’m not going to say they’re inter
ested in me if I don’t know they are.
But I will say that I’d like to manage
in the major leagues again some
day.”
The A’s expected to challenge for
the AL West title after acquiring
veteran pitchers Joaquin Andujar
and Moose Haas in the offseason.
Both Andujar and Haas are on the
disabled list along with relief pitcher
Jay Howell and veteran center fielder
Dwayne Murphy.
Oakland was tied for first on May
10, but sank as the injuries hit.
Alderson had flown to Kansas City
on Tuesday after A’s slugger Dave
Kingman sent a box containing a
small rat to Sue Fornoff, a sportswrit
er for the Sacramento Bee, in the
Kansas City pressbox.
Fornoff has said Kingman has ha
rassed her since she was assigned to
the A’s.

Irwin takes first round lead in Canadian Open
OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) Hale Irwin, mired
in the worst slump of his long career, shot a 4-
under-par 68 yesterday and took a one stroke lead
after the first round of the Canadian Open Golf
Championship.
“It was time for me to relax and play the kind of
golf I’m capable of,” said Irwin, who ranks a
distant 129th on the PGA Tour’s money-winning
list this season.
A single stroke off the pace at 69 were Andy
Bean, a two-time winner already this season, Brad
Fabel, Clarence Rose, Mike Donald, Denny Hepler
and Dan Halldorson, seeking to become the first
Canadian to win this title since 1954.

been a lot of fun all this year,” said Irwin, who
once went almost four seasons without missing a
cut. This year, he has missed in seven of 15 starts.
“It’s been a long dry spell.
“I haven’t been playing that badly, I really
haven’t but the results have been terrible,” said
the two-time U.S. Open champion. “It’s just a little
thing here, a little thing there, and I’ve turned a 68
into a 72 or 73 and all of a sudden I’m struggling.”
But it was no struggle at all for Irwin on a sunny
and breezy day in the Toronto suburbs. He missed
only two fairways and three greens on the Glen
Abbey Golf Club.
