Icers defy logic to win Crabpot Tourney
By MARK FURRY•
Collegian Sports Writer
Two weeks ago, the hockey team played Navy
here in Happy Valley. Navy won, 2-1. Logic would
then dictate that the Lions, participating in the
Navy Crabpot Tournament this past weekend at
Annapolis, Maryland, would probably lose again.
But, sports defy logic.
The Lions defeated the Midshipmen, 6-5, to win
the tournament. To get to the final game, Penn
State defeated Delaware, 5-4 the same team the
Lions defeated, 8-1, only a week ago.
In the last meeting with Delaware, six of Penn
State's goals came off the power play. This time,
however, penalties were not a factor in the out
come.
"Delaware kept it close on us," Head Coach Jon
Shellington said. "I think the big difference be
tween last time and this weekend was that the refs
didn't call as many penalties."
No team comes through a loss without making
some adjustments the next time they play, and
Shellington thougbt that was a factor.
"I'll have to give them credit," Shellington said.
"They made some changes on their penalty killing
unit, and we had some troubles with that."
Ryan being considered for Eagles' job . .
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Buddy
Ryan, coordinator of the Super
Bowl-champion Chicago Bears' fe
rocious defense, appears to be the
favorite in the latest handicap of
candidates for, the head coaching
job with the Philadelphia Eagles.
In addition to Ryan, the entry list
has David Shula, Tony Dungy and
Fred Bruney.
Norman Braman, owner of the
National Football League team,
says only that he expects to have a
winner this week. Nominations

NEW ORLEANS (AP) The
New Orleans Saints have ended
their search for a new coach and
could announce as early as today
that Jim Mora has been named the
seventh full-time coach in the dis
mal 19-year history of the NFL
team, sources said.
Since it was formed in 1967, the
Saints have had two break-even
seasons, 8-8, as the best records in
franchise history.
Mora coached the Philadelphia
Stars now the Baltimore Stars
to 52 victories and two U.S. Football

In this field, Ryan appears to be a
2-1 shot. It's been a route, and with
his 18 years of experience as an
NFL assistant he's bred for dis

defense was the foundation of the
Super Bowl victory. Six times in his
eight years at Chicago, his defense

set to announce Mora's hiring
It is expected that Mora will bring
his entire eight-man coaching staff
with him to New Orleans.
Neither Jim Finks, general man
ager of the Saints, nor Carl
Peter

would confirm Mora's hiring.
It was reported in Philadelphia
late last week that Mora had decid

After blowing a team out 8-1, it is easy to become
overconfident. Combine that with the fact that the
team that was blown out usually has revenge on its
minds, and it's easy to see why the Lions had
trouble with Delaware.
"We were a little overconfident," Senior Tim
Holdcraft said. "They (Delaware) wanted re
venge. This time they skated better and played
harder."
Lion goaltender Gerry Hourihan was voted the
tournament's most valuable player. But Hourihan
passed the praise on to his defensemen: Geoff
Bishop, Jeff Speece, John Holland, and Davis
Mullholand.
"I tell you, I wish I could give the trophy to all
the guys, but especially to the defensemen,"
Hourihan said. "They cleared out the crease well
and really moved the puck."
Hourihan's key saves helped the team remain
sharp during the game.
"He made the key saves, and that's what you
need," Shellington said. "A couple of times
against Delaware and Navy both, their guys would
beat our defensemen, but Gerry would stop them.
When you see a guy race past your defensemen on
a breakaway, your heart kind of stops. But then

He's now in Hawaii helping his

Dungy, defensive coordinator of
the Pittsburgh Steelers, joined the
field Saturday when Braman dis
closed the Eagles had talked with
the 30-year-old, who would be the
first black head coach in the NFL.
He seems to be a sprinter in this
distance event and about 10-1.
Either• Shula or Dungy would be
the youngest head coach in modern
year-old friend and associate.
"Jim Mora is a great teacher.
He's also a tremendously flexible

who'll dwell on the problems that

said.
"Obviously, I'm biased, but we
have won a lot of football games
together."
"One thing more about Jim Mora
a real key: He is absolutely,
without any question, full of integri
ty and honesty. He won't lie to the
troops. He says it like it is, and
sometimes that hurts. But he says

when your goalie stops him, the momentum shifts
back to you."
Losing to Navy 2-1 earlier in the season was all
the motivation the Lions needed to defeat the
Midshipmen.
"We just knew they had no chance against us,"
Holdcraft said. "We played our worst game
against them last time, and I knew we were going
to take it to them."
"West ,Chester State (the other team in the
tournament) started to come back against Navy
late in the game," Hourihan said. "And we were
all up in the stand rooting for Navy, because we
wanted another shot at them."
After scoring only one goal against Navy last
time, the Lions knew they had to score more goals,
and they did. So what happened this time that
didn't two weekS ago?
"We passed the puck better, and moved it
around well," Shellington said. "We were feeding
our center in the slot, and he was creating the
plays, opening up the shots for us. We also fore
checked extremely well."
After losing in overtime last weekend to Ohio
University, the players and coach agreed that this
tournament win was a big one.

Barkley named Player of Week
NEW YORK (AP) Charles Barkley, the second-year forward
who averaged 24 points per game and 15.8 rebounds in leading the
Philadelphia 76ers to a 3-1 record, won NBA Player of the Week
honors for the period ending last Sunday.
The 6-foot-6 Barkley had 24 points and 18 rebounds in a 103-93
victory over New York; 29 points and 14 rebounds in a 118-111
victory over Phoenix; and 17 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and
seven steals in a a 121-114 triumph over Cleveland.
In the 76ers' only loss of the week, 105-103 to Boston, Barkley had
26 points and 21 rebounds.
Other candidates for the award included Bill Walton of Boston,
Robert Reid of Houston, Eddie Johnson of Sacramento, Manute 80l
and Jeff Malone of Washington, T.R. Dunn of Denver and Adrian
Dantley of Utah.
Rhoden hoping to be traded
PITTSBURGH (AP) The agent for pitcher Rick Rhoden has
again asked the Pittsburgh Pirates to trade the veteran right
hander, who slumped to a 10-15 record and 4.47 earned run average
last season.
Pirates General Manager Syd Thrift, who unsuccessfully tried to
trade Rhoden during baseball's December meetings, said no trade
is possible until at least spring training.
"He has to be prepared to show his best efforts in spring training,
because that is where his lot will be determined," Thrift said.
Rhoden, the Pirates' opening-day pitcher last season, "has no
intention of pitching in Pittsburgh this season," said his agent,
Tony Attanasio.
"Rhoden feels he has paid his dues," Attanasio said. "He is
putting his condo up for sale. It is nothing about the city of
Pittsburgh. He just has too many psychological scars from being
there. He went through a divorce there and he wants out."
The Pirates obtained Rhoden in a 1979 trade with the Los Angeles
Dodgers for left-hander Jerry Reuss. Rhoden has a 106-85 career
major league record and is 64-61 in seven Pirates' seasons.
Pirates name new VP
PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday named
Kenneth C. Curcio, an assistant to the treasurer since 1973, as their
vice president for finance to replace treasurer Doug McCormick.
Curcio's appointment is effective April 1, according to team
spokesman Greg Johnson.
McCormick resigned last week to join the John W. Galbreath Co.
in an executive position. The Galbreath family is currently com
pleting the sale of the National League Pirates to a public-private
coalition headed by Ryan Homes, Inc. chief executive Malcolm
Prine.
