6—The Daily Collegian Friday, Nov. 8, 1985 Rep. Herman discusses comparable. worth By DENISE WEAVER Collegian Staff Writer State Rep. Lynn Herman, R- Centre, said Wednesday he does not believe comparable worth legislation which would allow the government to set wages to eliminate discrimina tion against occupations dominated try women will be passed by the state House of Representatives. Herman addressed the Centre County Personnel Association during a breakfast meeting on comparable worth legislation, right-to-know pro posals and others issues that could have a large impact on places of employment The bill defines comparable worth as the monetary worth of one job in a salary system in comparison to the worth of other jobs in that system. Criteria used to determine and eval uate comparability of jobs within one salary system would include skill, knowlege, physical demands, respon sibility and work conditions. Herman explained that the compa rable worth bill is aimed at getting the government involved in wage setting and evaluating employees' skills comparable to their jobs. Herman said he is in favor of equal pay for equal work but does not believe the government should inter fere in the private sector by evaluat ing jobs and setting wages. runa l smaziassorlimumenaumsammemizeismaninmelonammionsainaimnimul 11 I I 0 I I I I I I I I I I I a ® WEEKEND SPECIAL 1 14" Italian - 2 Bags of Chips I a FOR TWO Only $ 2 Drinks I • Customer pays applicable sales tax. • 4.93 •• Not valid with any other coupon on I • Valid During All Business Hours same menu item. 1111111111111111111Z111311;111111113110111111M1111111IIIIIIMIMENMEIMIMIRMIUM111111111nE11111.111111111111111111111111111 CIRCLEVILLE FARM WILL BE HOLDING TWO HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1985 9:OOAM - 4:3OPM Building A High-tensile Wire Fence 1:00PM - 3:OOPM Small Woodlot Management Objebtives EVERYONE WELCOME For Additional Information Contact Circleville Farm Office 214 Armsby Bldg. 863-2745 6,0 E • 6.0 Y, * AOE • 6.0 E • AOE • AOY, • AOE • AOE, w r> o o <1 • DELTA THETA SIGMA congratulates our New Brothers John Baker John Bea tty Dave Blank Mike Carr George DeMers Mark Fiely AOY, • AOE • 6,0 E • AOE • LVE • ACIE • 6,0 Y, • AOE joilltsForle- , ovardhana Quja C&cratton_) r , , :1,1 t:, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10 te,,...'1 . ..,...-, 1 ..: - .:X',: t,... 12 —5:30 PM at 1 84,,, .. ..,,, Ns : t t r .L. .35.:-: Gita-Nagari Farm ',' ;;'.W.l::;_i, ' 4 ' l ' PS 4 .4i7 \ g - " .,, A )1.- '.• , : d."...- it , ~ `i, .:, ~, i s s FREE TRANSPORTATION i' l .iit- t ,, v o/, 1,,,„, 4 ,1 • • , Leaving 10:30 am from ; 7 •- 1 ,,....c.r t. !,,rl , / :: . ~ 1° ' ;' 2 ,,,'". 103 E. "There is job discrimination out Some members of the audience there but I don't think comparable were vocal in opposing the bill. Rich worth is the way to measure it," he and Cook, industrial relations direc said. "Personnel administrators tor at Centre Engineering, 2820 E. should realize job discrimination College Ave., said afterwards that his (can and does occur) and try to avoid main concern with the proposal is it." that if an employee does not follow Herman also discussed right-to know proposals, which would protect workers by informing 'them of the hazards of dangerous products and substances they may encounter or work with. Route 144 The problem of truck traffic on Route 144 could be alleviated by requiring highway safety improvements such as traffic lights and road signs, state Rep. Lynn Herman said yesterday Speaking at a State College Area Chamber of Com merce transportation committee meeting, Herman, R- Centre, explained that state Transportation Secretary Thomas Larson had proposed banning trucks from Route 144. Herman said the ban would reroute trucks to Route 322, the quickest and most probable alternative. However he said residents near Philipsburg and Port Matilda are outraged at the prospect of trucks traveling near their homes. Other solutions include detouring trucks onto Route 26, instead of routes 144 or 322, and onto the State College bypass, which is not yet completed. A long-term consideration Herman mentioned would be to build a bypass around Centre Hall and Pleasant 'Gap. A truck traffic analysis by PennDOT on the routes has been 237-7314 Expires 11/10/85 John Hartman John Hauck Karl Heffner Brent McMillen John Menges Ike Summerhill company safety procedures the em ployer is considered personally lia ble. "No employers have a real objec tion to their employees' right-to know, but it is with employees' neg truck traffic discussed completed, Herman said, but the results have not been received. Herman also gave a progress report on the State College bypass construction, saying it is scheduled to be completed in mid-December. The $1.4 million project, which began in August 1984, will reroute traffic around State College. The Elmwood Street construction is com pleted and the street is now open. On other subjects, Herman mentined that the 496 acres in Rush Township that make up the Mid-State Airport are for sale. "I see potential with the hangar and the runways there and it could be a job development center," Herman said. He also told the transportation committee that the Senior Citizens Shared Ride program will be restricted to senior citizens in rural areas Senior citizens pay 10 percent of the cost of a ride and the state lottery pays the remainder, he said. .. In addition, Herman discussed. the Alcoholics Insurance Coverage Act, which provides workers with drug, alcohol and mental illness benefits.
