Inexperience, injuries slow lady fencers

With one-half of the team nursing
injuries, and no returning starters
from last year, the women's fencing
team entered the Temple Collegian
Open in Philadelphia this weekend
with just one objective to gain
experience.
But when the last bout had been
fought, and all but one of the 102
women participating had been de
feated, the lady fencers gained
more than just a little experience
they gained courage and determin
ation.
"It's going to be difficult but
challenging," Coach Emmanuil
Kaidanov said of the upcoming sea
son. "Everyone is going to have to
work ' very hard to achieve their
maximum ability."
Team member Stacey Weindreb
agreed.
"I believe we have a lot of abili
ty," she said, "but it's just potential

despite a pulled hamstring suffered
just four days before the tourna
ment began. She finished 37th over
all.
"She's a real fighter," Captain
Sue Page said of Weindreb. "What
ever she lacks in skill or ability she
makes up in determination."
"Because of the injury," Wein
dreb said, "I had lost a little bit of
my confidence. But I put everything
I've learned this year, last year,
and the past years into that last
bout and I proved something to
myself . . . I proved that I can do
better."
Also fairing well in the tourna
ment for the Lady Lions were Jo
hanna Picard •and Page, who both
made it to the third round' and
placed 35th and 38th, respectively.
Lanier, a third base coach with the Cardinals
last season, signed a two-year contract and said he
hoped to hire former major league manager Yogi
Berra as an assistant coach.
"I talked to Yogi yesterday and we think he'll be
a good addition," Lanier said. "It will be nice to
have him there if I want to ask a question."
Wagner said Berra still was under contract to

knee injury that sidelined her most

"It bothers me a little," Page
said of the injury, "but I don't think
it affects my fencing that much."
Page and Weindreb were not the
only team members who competed
with an injury. Lauren Fox was
awaiting her first bout when she
injured her fencing hand while
sparring with Page; Fox went on to
finish 47th overall.
Also competing for the Lady Li
ons were freshman Amy Barrett,
who, finished in the second round,
and Ann Knecht, who finished 61st
overall.
Kaidanov said he was content
with his team's performance at the
tournament.
"The quality of the bouts satisfied
me," he said, "There was a definite
improvement in the quality of fenc
ing."
Kaidanov said he feels that Page

"She was so intimidated by the
pain," he said, "that her expecta
tion of it did not make her compete
to the best of her ability."
"I think the injuries will be all
right," Page said, "but I don't think
we're prepared mentally."
The lady fencers will have nearly
three weeks to prepare for their
next tournament, the Penn State
Open, which begins here Nov. 23.
Although they will be looking for
a healthy team by then, the Lady
Lions will still be hurt by a lack of
experience.
"We're basically starting from
the beginning," Page said, "We
have good fencers but they don't
have a lot of experience, and expe
rience is important in this sport.
"Far the Penn State Open, I think
we're going to be ready to go out
and do our best."
