The University of lowa and Gram
bling State University have one thing
in common Eddie Robinson.
The 66-year-old Robinson reigns as
the winningest coach in college foot
ball history today following Gram
bling State's 27-7 conquest of Prairie
View A&M. And lowa, the school
where Robinson earned his master's
degree in physical education, may
have retained its No. 1 ranking
thanks to a last-minute 35-31 victory
over Michigan State.
In his 44th season as Grambling's
coach, Robinson passed the late Bear
Bryant by notching his 324th victory.
"Whatever the record is, it belongs
to Grambling," Robinson said of the
predominantly black school in north
ern Louisiana. "You may talk about
the record, but that's not the record.
The record is 44 years at one school,
one job and one wife.
"We do the same things over and
over. We try to win, and that's just
about it. That's the name of it."
The countdown was on when Gram
bling took a 20-0 halftime lead over
Prairie View. lowa, however, cut it a
little finer. The Hawkeyes blew a 13-0
lead, fell behind Michigan State 24-13,
went ahead 28-24, trailed 31-28 and
finally pulled it out on quarterback
Chuck Long's 2-yard naked bootleg
with only 27 seconds left.
"The slowest quarterback in the
world can run that play and run it in
from the 2-yard line," said Long, who
also completed 30 of 39 passes for 380
yards and four touchdowns. "But I
ran as fast as I could."
But not fast enough to keep Coach
Hayden Fry from a few anxious mo
ments.
"Chuck isn't all that fast," Fry
said, "and when I noticed he hoisted
the ball at the 3-yard line I just about
had a heart attack."
