Milner claims Mays kept 'red juice' in locker

PITTSBURGH Former baseball player
John Milner testified yesterday that Hall of
Famer Willie Mays kept a "nasty, potent”
stimulant called “red juice” in his locker
during his final season with the New York
Mets irt 1973.
John Milner, a teammate of Mays with the
New York Mets in 1972 and 1973 and later an
outfielder with the Montreal Expos and Pitts
burgh Pirates, said he never saw Mays drink
the potion.
The surprising reference to Mays drew
several gasps in a U.S. District courtroom
overflowing with reporters and spectators at
the trial of Curtis Strong, 38, a former Phila
delphia Phillies caterer accused of selling
drugs to baseball players.
Milner was testifying about the use of
various drugs by major leaguers when de
fense attorney Adam O. Renfroe Jr. asked
about a reference to “Willie” in Milner’s
grand jury testimony earlier this year.
At the time, according to the transcript
read by Renfroe, Milner said: “There was
this one thing called red juice.... I tasted it
one time during his last year and it was really
nasty. Willie had this red juice. ... I guess
the pharmacist made it for him. I don’t know
what kind of speed it was but it kept your eyes
open.”

Asked who “Willie” was, Milner replied:
“Mays, Willie Mays. The great one. Yeah.”
Milner said yesterday that he never actual
ly saw Mays use the stimulant, which he
described “as real potent speed.”
Renfroe later told reporters that pharma
cists told him that “red juice” is made by
breaking a certain kind of amphetamine
capsule into water or another beverage and is
sometimes used by college students to help
them study long hours at a time.
A woman who identified herself as the
housekeeper at Mays’ home in Atherton,
Calif., said he was not in.
Milner was the seventh present or former
player to testify in the first eight days of
Strong’s trial on charges of trafficking drugs
to major league players on 16 dates when the
Pirates played home games from 1980 to 1984.
Milner and Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dave
Parker, who completed his testimony earlier
yesterday, both said the use of ampheta
mines, or “greenies,” was commonplace in
the major leagues. Parker also became the
second former Pirate to name former team
captains Willie Stargell and Bill Madlock as
distributors of the illegal drug in the Pitts
burgh clubhouse.
Milner said he once bought cocaine in the
Pirates lockerroom.
Parker, a close friend of both Stargell and
Madlock when the three played for the Pi
rates, said amphetamines “are commonly

I got them in the clubhouse from Stargell,
from Madlock."
Parker was asked if the two players ever
charged him for the drugs, which stimulate
the central nervous system and cause what
Parker called “a hyper type effect.”
“No, never,” said Parker, a two-time Na
tional League batting champion.
Stargell, now the Pirates’ first-base coach,
denied that he had distributed amphetamines
when the charge was made earlier this week
by former Pirates infielder Dale Berra.
Of Parker’s testimony, he said, “I’m not
commenting. The less said the better.”
Madlock, now with the Los Angeles Dodg
ers had denied Berra’s charge.
Milner testified that with the Pirates, the
pills would be left in his locker at times and
he would take them before a game.
“I don’t know who dispensed them. They’d
always be in my locker. Not every game.
Usually games in the second half of the
season when the players are worn out and a
little tired,” he said, adding that “Everybody
doesn’t take them. I don’t know how they got
there. I just know I’d take 'em."
Parker also testified that Pirates Manager
Chuck Tanner warned his players against
associating with Strong and Shelby Greer,
another man accused with selling cocaine to
players.

Parker said Tanner and other Pirates offi
cials warned against associating with Strong
and Greer became it had become “so well
known” among National League players that
the two were dealing drugs.
Berra testified Tuesday that Tanner once
warned him not to speak to Strong outside the
Pirates’ clubhouse in Three Rivers Stadium.
Tanner said he couldn’t recall the incident
and he has denied knowing Strong.
Parker did not say when Tanner issued the
warning, but he was discussing the year 1983
in his testimony.
“Chuck Tanner cautioned us about Curtis
Strong, that a drug probe was going on,”
Parker said. “(Former Phillies outfielder)
Gary Matthews was telling players to watch ;
out for Curtis Strong... that he was ‘hot,’ to
stay away from him.”
Parker said Tanner issued the same warn
ing about Greer, who faces 10 charges of drug
distribution after being indicted by the same
federal grand jury which indicted Strong in
late May. Greer’s case has yet to be heard.
“Shelby Greer was known to be ‘hot,’ the
way he was doing things around the ball
park,” Parker said. “Shelby Greer was very
well known around the Pirates organization.
He was being watched by security. All the
players were aware of that.”
Tanner, reached at his Three Rivers Stadi
um office, again denied he mentioned either
Strong or Greer to his players.

“I never knew there was anybody on our
baUclub involved in drugs in 1983,” Tanner
said.
“I didn’t know Strong or Greer in 1982,1981,
or 1980, no way,” Tanner added. “I didn’t
know him (Strong). The first time I saw
Curtis Strong was on TV. Greer was Dave
Parker’s friend. I saw him one or two times in
passing and I wouldn’t know him. I’d know
him now."
Tanner, at another point, said, “I’m not on
trial. Those guys who took the cocaine are.”
Milner, who was released in March 1983 by
the Pirates, testified that he bought $2OO
worth of cocaine from Strong in the restroom
of the Pirates lockerroom on June 13, 1980,
during a game against the Houston Astros.
Milner didn’t start and said he wasn’t
required to be on the bench until later in the
game.
“The game had just started and I was
sitting in front of my locker. Curtis Strong
came in ... he had access to the clubhouse
then. The clubhouse was pretty wide open at
that time,” Milner said. “We were sitting
around and chatting for a while. Then I asked
him if he had some stuff. He said, ‘Yes.’ We
went back to the restroom and the money
exchanged hands. Parker and I drove around
after the game and used it.”
Milner, who said he used cocaine from 1978
to 1982, testified he also bought cocaine from
Strong in Philadelphia. '
