Budd gives edge to Slaney in rematch

LONDON Britain's Zola Budd conceded early
defeat yesterday for her 3,000 meters showdown
with Mary Decker Slaney, while the more experi
enced American warned that tomorrow's race
billed as an Olympics rematch could help ruin
the teen-age Budd's career.
"I don't think I can win because Mary's best
time is some eight seconds faster than mine," a
nervous, softly-spoken Budd told a news confer
ence 48 hours before the race at London's Crystal
Palace stadium. "I'll be happy to beat my pre
vious best."
The race, part of a two-day lAAF-Mobil Grand
Prix meet, marks the first confrontation between
the two athletes since their collision in the 3,000-
meter final at the Los Angeles Olympic Games
almost a year ago that wrecked their medal hopes.
Slaney crashed out of the race in tears with a
painful leg injury while Budd, whose concentra
tion and will to run completely snapped, finished
the race in seventh place to boos from the crowd.
"I may forgive but I don't forget. My view has
not changed and I havemothing further to say on
the matter," Slaney said.
Since Los Angeles, the two runners have made
conciliatory gestures to one another and have
exchanged letters, reportedly patching up their
differences.
But they have never spoken directly and held
separate news conferences within 30 minutes of
each other at a downtown London hotel.
Slaney, looking confident and relaxed, her Brit
ish husband discus thrower Richard Slaney at
her side, said she had come to London to race
against the clock, not specifically against Budd,
who has had a spotty start to her outdoor season
with two wins and two defeats.
"Zola is a good athlete with a lot of potential but
a lot of unnecessary pressure was put on her
before the Olympics and in the year since," said
Slaney, the world 1,500 and 3,000 meter champion.
"If I had been managing her, I probably would
not have allowed her to run competitively this
year. A lot of times, the pressure is more detri
mental and unless the person can handle it and
knows how to deal with it, it can ruin them."
"The fact that Zola came straight out of South
Africa where there probably was not much pres
sure, created a difficult situation for her."
Both runners said they had no specific race plan
for tomorrow.
"It will be more of a personal battle between me
and the clock nothing personal with Zola," said
26-year-old Slaney.
"I don't want to get caught in a tactical race but
if nb one is prepared to set the pace, then I don't
mind doing it."
Then she added, half-mockingly: "I may try to
stay clear of certain feet,, but that's all."
Budd stressed that neither she nor Slaney could
afford to ignore the other 19 runners, who include
Switzerland's Cornelia Burki, the fastest woman
this year over 3,000 meters, and Norway's Ingrid
Kristiansen, world record holder over 5,000 meters
and the marathon.
"There's a good chance that any of them might
win, especially if Mary and I forget about them,"
said Budd.
"I'll just go in and run like I did when I won the
world cross country championships in March,
where I•had no specific plan but ran well." _
The race will be televised in

ABC's "Wide World of Sports" at 4 p.m. EDT.

In a copyright interview with Seattle television
station KING, Budd said she cut in too close
causing Slaney, then known as Mary Decker, to
fall with 1,300 meters left in the - 3,000-ineter wom
en's race.
Budd's coach, Pieter Labuschagne, also told the
station his star pupil was to blame for the collision.
"I think Zola made a mistake by running the
way she (ran) . . . and not cut into -'to the curb
more decisively," said Labuschagne. '

Guildford, England, in March and apologized for
hurting her feelings with her comments after the
race. Slaney told Budd "Don't bother" when she

Budd, running for the British team in the Olym
pics, said she was forced to cut in on Slaney by
teammate Wendy Sly.

"The changes are more subtle
than anything else. About the most
