Slaney, Budd set to meet again
By ANDREW WARSHAW
AP Sports Writer
LONDON Tears and acrimony
have given way to conciliatory words
and gestures.
The' soothing effect of a year's
passing has mended the stinging pain
of Los Angeles.
Zola Budd and Mary Slaney will
race together July 20, the first time
since they tangled in the now-famous
3,000-meter womens' final at the 1984
Summer Olympics.
"It will be a marvelous evening for
me," said Budd.
"I bear Zola no animosity," said
Slaney.
Billed as an "Olympics rematch,"
the race is the main attraction of a
star-studded Grand Prix meet at Lon
don's Crystal Palace stadium.
Romania's Maricia Puica, the
Olympic 3,000 winner, was invited to
participate in the long-awaited show
down, but was withdrawn by her
national federation last week.
That leaves center stage to Slaney,
26, and Budd, 18.
Center stage was theirs, too, inside
the Los Angeles'Coliseum on the night
of Aug. 10.
Slaney, the U.S. middle-distance
track queen known then as Mary
Decker, took the lead at the start. The
wispy Budd, running barefoot, as was
her custom in her native South Afri
ca, soon fell in behind the American.
As they came off a turn, with little
more than 1,200 meters to go, Budd
edged toward the inside and nar
rowed the opening in front of Slaney.
As she kicked, Budd's bare foot
brushed Slaney's right thigh. Then
Slaney's right foot struck Budd's left
one.
Budd struggled to maintain her
balance, Slaney lost hers and fell to
the infield grass, writhing in pain.
Budd looked back in disbelief, but
kept running. She crossed the finish
line in seventh place, the crowd

Puica, who had managed to avoid
Slaney as she fell, went on to win the
gold medal.
Budd tried to approach the injured
Slaney as Richard Slaney, the British
discus thrower she married on Jan. 1,
carried her off the track.
"Don't bother," Slaney said, turn
ing away the teen-ager who idolized
her.
Later, she said she blamed Budd
for the fall: "I hold her responsible."
Budd fled to South Africa, the coun
try she left to gain British citizenship
so she could compete at the Los
Angeles Games. .
It was all too much: Los Angeles,
being a newcomer to international
athletics, family problems and crit
icism of her quick citizenship switch.
As she wrestled with the future, the
shy Bloemfontein farm girl came
close to abandoning her running ca
reer.
Slaney plays down significance
LONDON (AP) America's Mary Decker Slaney and
her new coach, Luiz Oliveira, are playing down the
significance of Saturday's eagerly awaited clash with
Britain's Zola Budd.
Slaney and Budd will race over 3,000 meters at a Grand
Prix meet at London's Crystal Palace stadium for the
first time since their collision at the Los Angeles Olympic
Games.
The now famous clash of legs in the 3,000 at the Los
Angeles Coliseum left the medal hopes of both runners in
tatters. Slaney lay writhing in agony on the side of the
track, while Budd's concentration snapped and she fin
ished disappointingly in seventh place amid boos from the
pro-American crowd.
The bitter recriminations that followed made a re
match a thrilling prospect. But in the weekly British
entertainment magazine, .TV Times, published yester
day, Slaney said:
"I will be happy to run against Zola again but as far as
I'm concerned she is now just another runner. The best

Turning her back on Britain, she
decided to run domestically again,
risking running afoul of the interna
tional boycott of South Africa's apart
heid policies.
British track officials, aware that
Budd faced a worldwide ban, man
aged to change her mind just 48 hours
before she was due to compete.
Curiously, during a U.S. television
interview last week in Seattle, Budd
said she had deliberately slowed
down after colliding with Staney for
fear of being booed even more
harshly if she had won.
"I didn't want to stand on the
winner's rostrum. I think the people
would have booed again. So I ran
slower, not to get a medal," she said.
"Maybe it would have been better if I
had stopped."
Slaney, who lives in Eugene, Ore.,
said the groin and hip injuries she
sustained in the Games prevented her
from working out for nearly two
months.

situation is if it's just another race, if we both just happen
to be there.
"When people look back at the 1984 Olympics, they will
think about Carl Lewis, about Ed Moses and 'what
happened to Mary.' Of course it bothers me. I wanted to
win but it isn't a great tragedy. It's behind me now."
Oliveira said the Slaney-Budd confrontation had been
unfairly built up by the media.
"Zola is a good runner, a gocid kid," he told TV Times.
"We shouldn't have that kind of rivalry. The press is
doing it. Mary's not worrying about running against
anybody. She just wants to do her best."
Oliveira said the 26-year-old Slaney was not out to break
any world records during her month-long tour of the
European Grand Prix circuit.
"We don't talk about world records because we don't
want that pressure," he said. "You can't step on a track
thinking of breaking world records."
Slaney is due to arrive in London today and has
scheduled a lunchtime press conference at a downtown
hotel.

When she did return to the track,
the oft-injured American did so with a
vengeance.
"Sometimes I wonder if what hap
pened at the Olympics wasn't a bles
sing in disguise to motivate me more.
Maybe, maybe not. Maybe that's
what I needed to get something fired
up in me," she said during an inter
view in January.
In her first race after the spill, on
Jan. 18, Slaney posted a world indoor
best during the 2,000 meters in the
Sunkist Invitational at Los Angeles.
She just didn't break the mark, she
shattered it by nearly nine seconds,
with a time of 5:34.52.
She already owns indoor marks in
the mile (4:20.5) and the 1,500
(4:00.8).
On July 9, in her first appearance in
Europe this summer, she won an 800-
meter race in Cork, Ireland, narrow
ly failing to beat her own American
record.
Slaney is the world champion in the
1,500 and 3,000 meters.

Clyde King described the addition
of Allen as "a real plus."
"The youngster has a live arm,
with a major league fastball and a
big league curve," King said.
Allen was traded to St. Louis in
1983 with pitcher Rick Ownbey for
first baseman Keith Hernandez.
That year Allen, used primarily as
a starter, was 10-6 with a 3.70
earned run average.
The Cardinals moved Allen to
the bullpen in 1984 and he com
piled a 9-6 record, with a 3.55 ERA
and three saves.
Allen struggled this season. His
record is 1-4, with one save (none
since April 20) and an ERA of 5.59
in 29 innings. He has appeared in
only six games since May.
