Giants belt Cowboys 28-7, Eagles squeak by Vikings

Phil Simms, who has spent most of his NFL
career on the sidelines with injuries, is now
spending his time causing pain to the opposi
tion.
Simms fired three touchdown passes and
Lawrence Taylor and Terry Kinard led an
opportunistic defense that forced four Dallas
turnovers as the surprising New York Giants
breezed past the Dallas Cowboys 28-7 yester
day.
"I feel good about what I did this week,"
Simms said. "I didn't get the yardage I did
last week, but I feel good about the fact that
every time they gave us an opportunity, we
took advantage of it."
Simms, who threw for four touchdowns in a
victory over Philadelphia last Sunday, fired a
62-yard scoring pass to Byron Williams late
in the first period to give the Giants a 7-0 lead.
Then, only a minute and five seconds later, he
hit rookie Lionel Manuel with a 16-yard
scoring strike on the first play after Kinard
intercepted a Gary Hogeboom pass and re
turned it 39 yards.

quarter with a shoulder bruise, put on a show
for the Giants Stadium crowd of 75,931.
With Dallas in a third-and-3 situation at the
Giants 6, the All-Pro linebacker blitzed up the
middle and crashed into Hogeboom. The ball
bounced loose right into the hands of Andy
Headen, the Giants' other outside linebacker,
and he raced 81 yards untouched into the end
zone to make it 21-0.
"I felt like I was in a highlight film,"
Headen said of his long dash.
Simms threw his third TD pass, to Zeke
Mowatt, on the first play after Ron Fellows
fumbled the opening kickoff of the second
half.
"This is not the end. We didn't take this one
as a 'must' game," Giants Coach Bill Par
cells said. "We got off to a pretty' good start
and I think we'll continue to improve. Last
week was just the beginning."
