16—The Daily Collegian Friday, Sept. 7, 1984 Bootees look forward to Rhode Island matchup By MARK ASHENFELTER Collegian Sports Writer Usually, in a society that places an emphasis on winning, a game ending in a tie is grudgingly ac cepted by a coach and his players. Penn State and Akron played a double-overtime, 0-0, tie Tuesday evening at Jeffrey Field and im mediately afterwards Lion Head Coach Walt Bahr was satisfied with the outcome. "I thought we had our hands full for good portions of this game," Bahr said. "Maybe a tie was all we deserved." Now that Bahr has had time to reflect on the game he has taken a more optimistic overview of the tie against Akron's 15th ranked squad. With that in mind he is looking forward to tonight's 7:15 match against Rhode Island at Jeffrey Field. Even though the Lions (1-0-1) did not post a victory on the board, which may have disappointed the crowd, Bahr was more pleased with the outcome of the Akron contest than he was with the Lions' 6-2 victory over Navy last Satur day. "Tuesday's game was a differ ent type of soccer compared to Saturday's game and I'm sure, from a spectator's standpoint, that Saturday's was more enjoyable," Bahr said. "But from a soccer coach's perspective Tuesday's game was much more interest. Akron presented a much stiffer test for the Lions, in terms of pure athletic skills, than did a Navy squad which used an aggressive, physical style. At first the Lions had a hard time adjusting to the Zips' style of play, but came back and played strong through the sec ond half and both overtime peri ods. The Lions actually had many chances to score late in the game, but never could get the ball past the Akron goalie. This fact was not lost on sophomore midfielder Steve Potter. "Akron is a well-skilled team, but I still thought we played a good game," Potter said. "We had the better scoring opportunities, but we couldn't get it in." While the Lions started off slow- highlight and (Art 41 - iick as a flash AR more than just a highlighter Switch from highlighting to jotting notes without changing pens. Penn State freshman starter Thomas Greve (left) battles for a loose ball with Akron's Mark Pfister during Tuesday's night game at Jeffrey Field. ly on Tuesday, Bahr was not sur prised since it was the first time his squad had been up against that particular style of play. He knew that it would take awhile for the necessary adjustments to be made by the players. Although he has had his squad practice against various situations, Bahr said it is not the same as actual game expe rience. "Soccer is a `player's game' and it took them awhile to adjust to Akron's style of play," Bahr said. "You can't call any timeouts to make adjustments, you have to have done all your preparations , before the game. The only time you can make any changes is at half time." Many of the Lions turned in strong performances on Tuesday evening, especially Troy Snyder . r ctrztvw c43 , - - cto -- edv-G9rvtuw el::• - ct - e,• - p-.zll 7• - ca ~ e -- g" i \ C ALPHA XI DELTA 5 1 v cp k e N Denise Marthinsen - U• 1544 gc......), .„..).....a ..„.„..,....„. .„..).„,4 PH OTO Color Prints in One Hour Available now at your college store. announces its newest initiate Welco m e to the family! Snyder, who appeared a bit tentative while handling the ball against Navy, was sharper and helped control the tempo for Penn State's offense. Elmore, who was switched to sweeper during the game also adapted quickly to his new position and was a big factor in the contest. After two games Potter, already feels the Lions have' shown they are a stronger unit than last sea son's 11-8-1 squad. He feels a year of experience ( the roster has 10 sophomores) has really made a difference in the team's play. "We have almost everybody back with at least one year under their belts," Potter said. "Last year I think we were a little thin in a few places and a few people had to step in and start without any experience." 1 HOUR .unbEtu 113:110 am Eisenhower Chapel (Neilowship[lowing) 11:45 am (!rare Cutheran (ghurrh (turner Rimer Sc (darner) 5:30 pm Eisenhower (Pape' ( informul 4 eruice of Haig Communion) Greve and rest of the soccer team conclude their three•game homestand at 7:15 tonight Rhode Island. The Lions will be facing a stiff test against a visiting Rhode Island club which is ranked as the second best Division I team in New En gland, behind Connecticut, in the preseason polls. Last year, the Rams went 14-4-2 with one of their losses coming against the Lions in Kingston. Al though the final score was 3-0, the Rams scored the game's first goal only to have it disallowed on an offsides call. "That could have turned things around," Potter said of the offi cial's goal negating decision. "They have a lot of skilled play ersl; I'm sure they'll give us a tough time." The Rams will be led offensively by senior forwards Tony Fontes and Gil Monteiro, who combined for 58 points in 1983. He recorded eight shutouts in 1982 and could provide an interesting matchup with Lion keeper Greg Kenney. The one thing Bahr knows about Rhode Island is that the team will have been well-coached by Geza Henni, a former member of the Hungarian National Team. In the past the Rams have played a Euro pean style game, using a lot of inter-passing with less emphasis on body contact. Bahr expects more of the same this evening. The Lions won the Invitational last year by defeating Hampton Institute in the finals. Bloomsburg, Cornell, Navy, Mercyhurst, Temple, and West Virginia will also be competing at the tournament this year. . Penn State Head Coach Holmes Cathrall would like to recapture the title, and he said he has the team to do "We won with a weakened team last fall," Cathrall said. "But I think that • with the new players and the returning players that my team's a little stronger this year." Although the team lineup has not been finalized, the returning squad members are Virgil Christian, Mark Vereby, Bryan Crist, Dwayne Hultqu ist, and Tim Ferick. Freshmen Adam Steinberg, Pat DeMarco, Tom Kauf man and sophomores Lee Sponaugle and John Mercer have also joined the squad. Junior Scott Grebe, a transfer from Bloomsburg, will also make his Penn State debut at the Invitational. The lineup for the Invitational will be determined by internal team play offs. Doubles combinations have also not been decided, but Cathrall said he would like to take advantage of his left-handed players for doubles. "This is the first year I've had four left-handed players on the team that are very, very good," Cathrall said. "Left-handers can concentrate the strength down the middle a little more in doubles. Now I just have to determine the chemistry between two kids." Senior Virgil Christian also said the team was unique this year in the quality of the new players joining the team. "It's a different kind of team than we've had in the past in that it's pretty young," Christian said. "We've had young teams in the past, but this team, more so than any other, has a tremendous amount of talent. They have more talent than I've seen in four years." look NOTICE Collegian Inc. reserves the right to release the names of individuals who place advertis ing in The Daily Collegian, Colle gian Magazine and The Weekly Collegian.
