18—The Daily Collegian Thursday, April 12, 1984 Fishing publicity hurts creeks, prof says By JEANEITE KREBS Collegian Staff Writer The conservation of Centre County streams may be affected by the growing popularity in fishing and the reputation of area streams, a University assistant professor of physical educa tion said recently. Joe Humphreys, who has been fishing for about 50 years, said that because of recent publicity about Centre County streams, the streams may have more fishermen than they can handle when the season opens Saturday "Our streams are fragile, and many of the fishermen coming into Centre County to fish will not be ecology-minded," Humphreys said. He said some fishermen not only pollute the streams with litter, but they also take more than their quota of eight fish and fish that are smaller than the legal six-inch limit. Fishermen are not the only contributing fac tors to the streams' problems, he said. Acid rain and snow are causing a much greater problem for area streams and chemical waste is also a hazard. 111Hsvay Sicillian Style Cut Pie Get 2 slices of Sicillian'Style Cut Pie and a Soda for ONLY $1.55 Walk-in fast service at the Cut Pie Shop on Garner Street 112 South Garner Street • 234-0349 ~44 5 eleeeineeeeeeeeeee60 564545e 4 58 .. 3 . DON'T MISS Announcing A New Classics Course "Spring Creek will never be what it was be cause of the past chemical dumpings," he said. "It is slowly dying." A ban on keeping fish from Spring Creek, which flows through Lemont, will be in effect for a second year, said Charles Kulp, a spokesman from the Fish and Wildlife Service. There is a chance the chemical Kepone, which was man ufactured by the Ruetgers-Nease Chemical Co., could still be in the ground water, he said. In spite of the possible complications of the season, the Pennsylvania Fish Commission said the conditions for fishing are very good this year. Humphreys said the water may be higher and colder than usual because of the recent blizzard. Different fishing tactics should be applied in different areas of the stream. As water temperatures get colder, the trout's metabolism slows down. This calls for what Humphreys calls slow fishing getting the bait doWn on the bottom of the stream. Another important factor for fishing is whether the fish is a native or stocked fish. "Stocked trout have been fed overhead every day. They will be looking for disturbances on top of the water," he CLASSICS 30: The Etruscans ar Language, art, society and religion of the Etruscans (BDR Humanities Req. He also said fish will be located where there is a velocity change in the stream. "The fish don't like fighting a swift current any more than people do, so they will be near the banks of the streams or behind boulders." Humphreys said the state Fish Commission has done an excellent job stocking the fish in the streams this year. The commission is using a new method called "float stocking" which does not merely dump all the fish in one area, but spreads the distribution out .over the entire stream, he said. "The only change I would like to see is more fingerling brown trout dumped into the streams. They may be small this season, but in the future they will be a good hearty fish," Humphreys said. • Humphreys will stress the conservation of fishing in a fly fishing series he is preparing for ESPN for broadcast in July. A new generation of conservationists is developing, he said. IS NOW ACCEPTING now members Amherst freshmen rushed for old times By The Associated Press AMHERST, Mass. Amherst Col lege fraternities, due tote abolished next month, rushed freshmen for old time's sake this week, prompting action to prevent a fraternity revival in September. Freshmen in previous years would, during rush, have been pledging to become fraternity members by their sophomore year. But the college trustees earlier this year voted to disband the fraternities, saying the social groups no longer were relevant to campus social life. "The college's position is that these rushes mean nothing. It's regrettable that a number of students thought the drive was legitimate because there won't be fraternities next year," said college spokeswoman Terry Allen. "The council had not originally planned to implement a quota, but considered this week's rush an at tempt by fraternities to continue next year," said council member John Blassberg, 20. "They could stack the houses and discourage others from living there." The quota recommendation will be given to G. Armour Craig, the col lege's interim president, Blasberg said.
