16—The Daily Collegian Wednesday, April 11, 1984 Isles 'drive for five' continues with 3-2 win :13y BARRY WILNER .AP Sports Writer UNIONDALE, N.Y. Defenseman Ken Morrow blasted a 25-foot shot through the legs of goalie Glen Hanlon at 8:56 of overtime last night to keep alive the New York Islanders' drive for five consecutive NHL championships with a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers. Despite being outplayed for most of the Patrick .Division best-of-five semifinal series by their arch rivals, the Islanders found a way to win, capturing the series three games to two. They eliminated the Rangers for the fourth straight year behind the parkling fifth-game goaltending of Billy Smith and an opportunistic offense. Morrow, who has been a good-luck charm for the Islanders since joining them in 1980 after helping the U.S. Olympic hockey team to a gold medal, had only three goals during the regular season. But his shot off a rebound of a Brent Sutter shot was perfect and the Islanders had their fifth overtime victory in as many playoff games against their archrivals. Defenseman Tomas Jonsson fired home a 35-foot wrist shot that bounced 'off Hanlon to give the islanders a 2-1 lead at 7:56 of the third period. But Don Maloney tied it with 39 seconds to go. Smith stopped Mark Pavelich's shot, but the rebound flew into the air and Maloney poked it in midair and past Smith. Since losing to the Rangers in the Stanley Cup semifinals in 1979, the Islanders have won a record 17 consecutive playoff series. Only once before this matchup in 1982, when they rallied from a 3-1 deficit late in the deciding fifth game to win in overtime against Pittsburgh were the Islanders so close to being dispatched from the playoffs. The Rangers continued their first-period domina tion in the deciding game and jumped on top at 12:06 for the fifth straight game on a superb solo effort by Ron Greschner. Greschner, who had been benched for the last three games, took the puck into the right-wing corner, circled and skated around Islanders defenseman Denis Potvin, then poked a backhander past Smith. The Islanders tied it with 11 seconds remaining in the period. Mike Bossy got their first first-period goal of the series when defenseman Tom Laidlaw lost track of the puck in his skates and Bossy pounced on it, then deposited a backhander be tween the legs of Hanlon. But Smith, who has backstopped the Islanders to all four of their Stanley Cups, was unbeatable the, rest of the way. After Jonsson's tie-breaking goal, Smith foiled a Rangers power play. But it was the Islanders, in fact, who had the best scoring chance while short-handed, but Hanlon robbed John Tonel li on a breakaway. 44444444444444444444 CROSS IP ir BLOODMOBILE RED REGISTRATION 11 , Register April 9 - April 20 Ground Floor HUB i P ir sponsored by ma ir Alpha Phi ()Mega & Gamma Sigma Sigma I IP V V IPBLOODMOBILE will be here 4/24-4/25, es R. 012 io a.m. - 4 p.m., HUB Ballroom 7 VP 4444444444'44144444444 . 1 / 4 ------ 9 "PSG°A too 43 4 ONLY di I I Igi 0 34 WITH COUPON ea. (AP) Dennis Maruk scored twice to lift the Minnesota North Stars over the Chicago Black Hawks 4-1 last night and into the next round of the NHL playoffs. Minnesota outshot Chicago 41-21 in the deciding fifth game and now plays St. Louis in a best-of seven Norris Division title series, which starts tomorrow. It's the first time in three seasons that Chicago hasn't ousted the North Stars from the playoffs. Minnesota grabbed a 2-0 edge in the first period. Maruk scored 'first, backhanding a short-handed goal between Chicago goalie Murray Bannerman's legs 2:50 into the game. George Ferguson skated across the blue line and rifled in a 35-foot slap shot nine minutes later. But only 53 seconds into the second period, Chicago made it 2-1 on a power play. Bob Murray's shot from just inside the blue line weaved through traffic and past Minnesota goaltender Don Beau pre. Minnesota went up 3-1 with five minutes to go in the second period. Tom McCarthy slid a pass by sprawling Black Hawk defender 'Doug Wilson and Dino Ciccarelli whacked it in from the corner of the crease. Maruk added an empty-net goal with 24 seconds to go.
