Laxers put it together against No. 7 Hofstra
By JEFF SAUKAITIS
.Collegian Sports Writer
In its first seven games of the season, the men's
lacrosse team showed flashes of brillance. But the
Lions were unable to put together a strong effort
against some of the tougher teams in the country.
That is, until Saturday afternoon.
When senior attackman Tom Lion scored at the
1:48 mark of sudden death overtime, Penn State (4-
4) defeated seventh-ranked Hofstra, 11-10. The win
was significant not only because it was the Lions'
first against a ranked team, but also because it
should give the team greater confidence for the
difficult schedule that lies ahead.
Head Coach Glenn Thiel said the Lions made
definite progress Saturday because they played
well throughout the contest and had no break
downs.
"We gained a lot of confidence and we played
'very well the whole game," Thiel said. "It was
probably our only game all year when everybody
played very well. There were no lapses particular
ly.

The game started out as a seesaw battle in the
first quarter with Hofstra taking an early 2-0 lead
just 2:47 into the contest, before attackman Rich
Russo scored at the 4:37 mark and Lion netted the
fii•st of his five goals on the afternoon at 7:17.
The quarter ended with Penn State clinging to a
4-3 lead and the Lions increased the margin to 8-5 at
halftime on second period tallies from freshman
attackman Mike Mosko, senior attackman Gary
Martin, and Lion, who scored two in the period.
But Hofstra began to take control of the game in
the third quarter, scoring four consecutive goals to
take a 9-8 lead. With Hofstra beginning to control
the tempo and shut down the Penn State offense,
freshman defenseman Marty Coyle ended a Lion
dry spell with his first collegiate goal at 14:34 into
the period.
Coyle came all the way down the field from his
defensive position to score the unassisted goal and
regain momentum for the Lions. Thiel said Coyle's
goal was the key play of the game.
"Hofstra came on really strong in the third
quarter and they changed their defense on us,"

VOLUNTEER
Thiel said. "They were able to pretty much domi
nate play for about 99 percent of that quarter.
"But once Marty Coyle scored that goal, the
whole fourth quarter was very even," he added.
"We seemed able to jack up the enthusiasm anoth
er notch so that the entire fourth quarter was
tightly. played."
Thiel also credited Coyle with an outstanding
defensive effort since he had to guard Hofstra
midfielder Dave McCullough, perhaps the Dutch
men's biggest offensive weapon. Coyle held McCul
lough to one goal and one assist:
Thiel said the offense made more progress Satur
day, scoring 11 goals againit one of the strongest
defensive teams in the country. Thiel was especial
ly pleased with the way Lion rose to the occasion
when the Hofstra defense keyed on Martin. Lion
finished the game with five goals and two assists.
Against Hofstra, Thiel said the Lions played their
first solid all-around game and gave a maximum
effort for the entire 60 minutes. He hopes the team
will maintain that level of play when it hosts
Rutgers, another ranked team, next Saturday.

CINCINNATI (AP) From his

outfielder Eddie Milner figured
his team was in trouble when the

"You tend to think things don't

The Phillies gave but quickly

complete-game performance by Mike Bellaman. In the

The Lions hope their bats will be active again this
afternoon when they face Duquesne in their home opener
at 3 p.m. at Beaver Field.
BeHaman ? who struck out nine Colonials, received
strong offensive support as his teammates banged out 11
hits in the opener, including four in the three-run third
inning which broke a 1-1 deadlock. Roy Walker's double
and a single by Bob Perks accounted for the scoring.
The second game was a different story as the Lions, who
carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, saw their
pitching go awry. Tom Bart got off to a strong start but
ran into problems in the four-run , fourth.
Eric Hohn came in to relieve and was touched for five
more runs over the remainder of the game. Simcox again
provided the brunt of the offense knocking in two runs for
the Lions.
