American Cancer Society THIS SPACE CONTRIBUTED AS A PUBLIC SERVICE Colts and Broncos win, without Elway By DICK JOYCE AP Sports Writer Both the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Colts won Sunday without million-dollar rookie quarterback John Elway. Elway, the NFL's No. 1 draft choice, who was drafted by Baltimore but forced a trade to Denver, got a rude introduction into the league as the regular-season got into full swing. Steve Deßerg, beaten out by Elway for the starting job, took over when Elway was battered in the first half and brought the Broncos a 14-10 victo ry over the the Pittsburgh Steelers by hitting Ron Egloff with a 2-yard touchdown pass with 2:54 remaining. Elway completed only one of eight passes, then sat out the rest of the game with a bruised right elbow. He was under constant pressure, being sacked four times for 26 yards in losses and throwing an interception. "If I play bad every game and we win, that's fine with me," said Elway. "I'd have loved to throw for 500 yards, be 35-for-35, but all I wanted was a big win up there." Deßerg led Denver 56 yards in 10 plays for the winning score that erased the Steelers' 10-7 lead built on Gary Anderson's 31-yard field goal in the third period. Baltimore, which posted an 0-8-1 record last season, had to go into overtime to beat New England 29-23. It was only the Colts' third victory all over the Patriots in their last 29 games. In another overtime game, Green Bay downed Houston 41-38. In other games, it was New Orleans 22, St. Louis 17; Atlanta 20, Chicago 17; Detroit 11, Tampa Bay 0; Los Angeles Raiders 20, Cincinnati 10; Los An geles Rams 16, New York Giants 6; Miami 12, Buffalo 0; Minnesota 27, Cleveland 21; New York Jets 41, San Diego 29, and Kansas City 17, Seattle 13. The regular season got under way Satdrday when Philadelphia beat San Francisco 22-17. Super Bowl cham pion Washington hosted Dallas last night. Linebacker Johnie Cooks ran 52 yards after scooping up a Tony Col lins' fumble on the third play of overtime to give Baltimore Coach Frank Kush his first NFL triumph. The Colts had sent the game in overtime on Raul Allegre's third field OtraPey+l.lKAPlLilN EDUCATIONAL CENTER Test Preparation Specialists Since 1938 For Information, Suite 320 444 E. Green Bay's Lynn Dickey threw for five touchdown passes against Hous ton, then left the game because of a headache in the fourth quarter. Dick ey's fifth TD toss, a 74-yarder . to a James Lofton, gave the Packers 38- 31 lead before the Oilers, who got three TDs from Earl Campbell, tied the score. Jan Stenerud's 42-yard field goal won it with 9:04 left in OT. George Rogers ran for 206 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown, in giving New Orleans an opening-game victory for only the third time in its 15-year history. Both quarterbacks, Ken Stabler of New Orleans, and Neil Lomax of St. Louis, left the game because of injuries. Atlanta made Don Henning's debut as head coach a 'successful one as Steve Bartkowski threw two touch downs, including the game-winner over Chicago in the fourth.quarter, a 21-yarder to Alfred Jenkins. Walter Payton gained 103 yards on the ground and 96 on receptions for the Bears, whose quarterback, Jim Mc- Mahon, connected on 20 of 29 passes for 204 yards. Ed Murray's three field goals —29, 48 and 38 yards and a defense led by William Gay led Detroit over Tampa Bay, whose quarterbacks, Jerry Goldsteyn and Jack Thompson, were sacked seven times for 39 yards in losses. Marcus Allen's two first-half touch- downs started the Raiders to a 17-0 halftime lead over Cincinnati. The Raider defense sacked Bengals quar terback Ken Anderson four times and forced two fumbles. Vince Ferragamo rang up 279 yards passing, including two TD passes to Mike Barber as the Rams sacked Giants quarterback Scott Brunner five times and intercepted hime three times. No. 1 draft pick Eric Dickerson gained 91 yards in helping Coach Johnny Robinson make a winning debut. Uwe von Schamann booted four field goals 33, 26, 36 and 50 yards in Miami's shutout over Buffalo. In terceptions by the Blackwood broth ers, Glenn and Lyle, set up the first and last field goals. Ted Brown scored three touch downs, on runs of one and five yards and on a 10-yard pass from Tommy Kramer to lead Minnesota past Cleveland. Eagles win behind rookies, second-string By JOEL SIEGEL Associated Press Writer PHILADELPHIA Eagles Coach Marion Campbell said yesterday that the play of rookies and second-stringers in Philadelphia's comeback win over San Francisco not only gave them needed experience, but lifted his entire team as well. "There is no question this is a big boost for us," the coach said of his team's 22-17 NFL victory Saturday over the 49ers. "I'm pleased with the people who came in to play. I know it gives them confidence. It gives the team confidence." Quarterback Joe Pisarcik came off the bench in the second half to complete eight of 10 passes for 101 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown to Hubie Oliver. Playing for the injured Wilbert Montgomery at half back, Michael Haddix picked up a game-lead ing 76 yards and his first NFL touchdown. . Stoudt feels Bradshaw's early days By ALAN ROBINSON AP Sports Writer PITTSBURGH Cliff Stoudt now knows what Terry Bradshaw felt like all those frustrating years. Bradshaw, one of pro football's most heralded young quarterbacks ever when he broke in with Pitts burgh in 1970, felt the wrath of the impatient Steelers' fans early and often. They even cheered once when he was injured, knowing he would have to be replaced. It wasn't until he quarterbacked the Steelers to the first of their four Super Bowl championships in 1974 that Bradshaw completely won the fans over to his side. Stoudt, stepping in at quarterback this season as Bradshaw mends from off-season elbow surgery, felt the sting of boos on his ears Sunday as the Steelers were upset by the Denver Broncos 14-10. Stoudt completed 18 of 32 passes for 217 yards in only the second start of his seven-year career, but threw three costly interceptions and twice mishandled handoffs to running back Franco Harris, resulting in fumbles. "I was pretty disappointed," Stoudt said. "It was a bad day. Every quarterback has them. I'm disappointed that this was the first one. I reallly wanted to have a good "Cliff did a lot of things well, but then we'd make an offensive mis RIDERS NEEDED EVERY Friday to exits 23 and 24, $l5 round trip. Call Steve 234.2483. The Steelers' coaches Planned to spend Labor Day laboring over the films of the Denver loss and prepar ing for two consecutive road games. The Steelers play at Green Bay on Sunday and at Houston on Sept. 18 before playing again in Pittsburgh Elway enjoys poor showing in opener By ALAN ROBINSON AP Sports Writer PITTSBURGH John Elway had a bad game but a good time in his NFL debut. Denver's celebrated million dol lar rookie quarterback, Elway completed just 1 of 8 passes for 14 yards and was standing on the sidelines Sunday as veteran Steve Deßerg guided the winning touch down drive in the Broncos' 14-10 upset victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. But Elway, who sat out the sec ond half with a bruised elbow, said he'd take such a performance any time, just as long as the Broncos win. "I'd have loved to throw for 500 yards, go 35 for 35, but I wanted the going down and someone stepping up and seizing the opportunity to play," Campbell said at his weekly press conference. "Our bench must be pretty good to do what they're doing. We talked about two things all week mental toughness and physical contact and that's what got it done for this." The coach said it was "very pleasing" to see the play of Pisarcik, who threw only one pass in the 1982 season. But he said Ron Jaworski, injured with a second-quarter concussion, will start Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins. "Ron's the man right now," Campbell said of Jaworski, a target of Philadelphia's boo-birds. "Ron was fighting a situation on long yardage. Hey, I'm not down on Ron Jaworski now." Campbell, who received the game ball for his first win as Philadelphia's head coach, gave credit to several big first-down plays and his defensive line's pass rush. Both allowed the Eagles to control the ball and dictate the game's flow in the second PARCEL SERVICE WITH $lOO insurance for less than the P.O. Optional overnight service. "You cannot single out one thing that went wrong," Noll said. "It's not the quarterback or the protec tion. It's a combination of things." But he acknowledged that the Steelers' passing game, despite a win up there," Elway said af terwards to a mob or reporters. Elway said he "didn't throw real well," and Broncos Coach Dan Reeves agreed. But Reeves said Elway will again start at quar terback next week in Baltimore, unless the elbow injury is worse than suspected. "If he's ready to play, he'll start," Reeves said. "I guess I'm going to have to learn how to pass with elbow pads on," Elway said. "It felt like three or four trucks ran over my elbow."
