16—The Daily Collegian Thursday, Sept. 1; 1983 Little League kings praised MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) Members of the East Marietta Little League baseball team, champions of last weekend's Little League World Se ries, have joined the ranks of sports figures to receive personal congratu lations from top-level politicians. The all-star players gathered with their manager, Richard Hilton, and a few hundred parents and friends at Wheeler High School Tuesday night to be showered with praise from a succession of speakers, including Gov. Joe Frank Harris. But the highlight of the ceremony came in a two-minute, cross-country telephone call from President Rea gan. Hilton held the phone, and the call Was broadcast around the auditorium on loudspeakers. What was said during the short, mostly one-way conversation was nothing new mostly a recitation of . , s. Hilton, who seemed to be just get ting used to being the manager of the only Georgia team ever to win the world championship, told the presi dent: "Two-and-a-half million (Little League) players in 27 different coun tries, and the 14 best are sitting right here," he said Hilton, 50, has changed jobs twice to stay with the team. In 1972, he refused'a promotion from the Insur ance Company he worked for because it involved leaving East Marietta to go to Tennessee. In 1975, when he was again pressured to take the promo tion, he quit. He left another job in 1978 because it did not allow enough "flexibility" for him to fulfill his Little League responsibilities. Why does he do it? "It's not some thing you can put in words or values, because the values aren't material," he said.""lt's the only youth program in the world where the first two lines of the pledge are 'I trust in God and I love my country,' so it can't be all bad. "They learn sportsmanship by re specting umpires' decisions. Some times (during practice) I'll call them out when they're safe just to see their reaction. You have to live with it. That decision is going to be final." Next year, he will have to begin with an almost all new team. Of the this year's 14 champions, only two will be eligible for The all-star team next year. (AP) Nebraska football Coach Tom Osborne said yesterday there are "grounds for opti mism" the Huskers could win the national championship, but he still is cautious when discussing the prospects for the season. Although the Huskers' 44-6 blowout of defending national champion Penn State in the inaugural Kickoff Classic Monday in East Rutherford, N.J., answered a lot of Osborne's questions, he's still not ready for overwhelming praise. • "You don't want to jump on the national championship bandwagon too quick," the 11-year coach said during the first Extra Point Club luncheon of the season. "In the world of athletics, everything is exagger ated," Osborne said. "When you win big, you're really not as good as everybody thinks, And when you lose big, you're really not as bad as everybody thinks." "While things look pretty gloomy right now at Penn State," Osborne said he isn't ready to give up on the Nittany Lions experiencing a good season. "Generally speaking, I'm fairly satisfied in almost all areas," he said of the season opener. "In the first quarter, there was hardly a down where we all played the•same defense," Osborne said. "Penn State helped us by being confdsed themselves." The luncheon audience laughed when Osborne said "by the second half, we could recognize what defensb we were in." "All kidding aside, I was more pleased with our defense than anything else in the game," he said. Osborne went into the game wondering about "the defense in general and the linebackers in particular. There was a spot or two in the defensive line, and I wanted to see improvement in the secondary and defensive ends." Those areas, passed Osborne's test. So did an inex perienced offensive line and a new set of kickers, he said. Of Nebraska's nine fumbles, the coach said "there were five or six times where it was 50-50 who was going to get it." With normal breaks, he said, Nebraska could have expected three to five turnovers instead of one. • Hills" Brand 1 ..,-. e l Glass Cleaner Ammonia formula.
