Fazio won't hesitate
to sub quarterbacks
By ALAN ROBINSON
AP Sports Writer
PITTSBURGH University of
Pittsburgh Coach Foge Fazio ad
mitted yesterday he thought about
his own quarterbacking situation
as he watched defending national
champion Penn State struggle of
fensively in a 44-6 loss to top
ranked Nebraska.
The Panthers, just like Penn
State, are "inexperienced on of
fense," Fazio said. "We have inex
perienced quarterbacks."
But, undeterred by what hap
pened to Penn State and its two
quarterback system, Fazio may
use one, two or even three quar
terbacks Saturday in the Panth
ers' season opener at Tennessee.
"We have to wait and see what
happens down there," Fazio said
at Pitt's weekly football news con
ference.
"This is our first game and I
don't know what's going to hap
pen. John s Cummings is our No. 1
quarterback, but I wouldn't hesi
tate to play Chris Jelic. They're
both close and they both should be
able to play. If the game warrants,
he (Jelic) will be in there."
Fazio was asked if this meant a
less than ringing endorsement for
Cummings, a junior who was
Pitt's third-team quarterback a
season ago. Cummings, who has
thrown only two passes in two
seasons at Pitt, is backed up by

sophomores Jelic and John Con
gemi.
"No, it means we haven't played
a game yet," Fazio said. "I don't
know what's going to happen. You
never know. All three are capable
of playing."
Pitt, expected to be stronger
defensively than offensively at
least early in the season, will
spend the early part of the Tennes
see game "trying to establish
something," Fazio said.
"Maybe it will be the tailback
(Joe McCall) running or the full
back (Marlon Mclntyre) inside or
our controlled passing game," Fa
zio said. "We have to make them
respect something we can do."
Tennessee Coach Johnny Ma
jors said via a telephone hookup
that he already respects Pitt. All
ter all, he coached the Panthers to
a 12-0 record and the national
championship in 1976.
"They have tremendous skills
defensively. They really go to the
ball," Majors said. "They've got
the kind of defense that gets you
running backwards, not for
wards."
Majors was quoted earlier in the
summer as saying that he felt that
one weakness Pitt had is the lack
of a quarterback.
"I'm not that dumb," Majors
said. "I like our quarterback
(Alan Cockrell). He's a winner.
But I never said that Pitt didn't
have a quarterback."

breaking Clerc in the second game, then held his

Wilkison broke his opponent for the fifth time in
the match to open the third set, then boomed his

But Wilkison held serve in the 12th game, sending

"This is my last chance of the year to make a
splash," Wilkison said after the match. "I've been
working so hard this summer. I think I should be
doing better than I have been. This gives me a lot of

"I felt I could win."
Wilkison said that in the third set, when Clerc

chance for a big win. Hang in there and show a little
character.' It's like I climbed a big mountain."

Bradshaw placed on injury reserve
PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pitts
burgh Steelers placed Terry
Bradshaw on the injured reserve
list yesterday, meaning the 34-year
old quarterback will miss at least
the first month of the regular sea

Bradshaw didn't play in any of the
Steelers' five pre-season games be
cause of off-season elbow surgery
and resumed practicing only last
week.
The Sfeelers also placed offensive
tackle Tunch Ilkin, who has a shoul
der injury, on injured reserve and
put eight players on waivers in
order to get down to the mandatory
49-man roster limit.
Among the casualties was John
Goodson, a second-year punter
from Texas who lost his job to Craig
