Education, vacation combined
By CHRIS STAMBOULIS
Collegian Staff Writer
Deciding where to go on vacation can be
difficult at times, especially if funds are low
and the usual tourist spots don’t offer much
appeal.
The Penn State Alumni Association might
offer just the alternative vacationers are
seeking. From July 9 to 16 the week
following the Central Pennsylvania Festi
val of the Arts it is sponsoring its 9th
annual Penn State Alumni Association Va-;
cation College (AVC).
The vacation college, which began in 1975,
is an educational program that provides
intellectual stimulation as well as cultural
and recreational activities for vacationing
alumni, families and anyone interested in
the University.
Heather Gilbert, assistant executive di
rector of the Penn State Alumni Associa
tion, said the University offers one of the
most successful alumni vacation colleges in
the country.
Gilbert attributes its success to the chil
dren’s programs, response from alumni
and the willingness of faculty members to
take part in the courses.
Josephine Chesworth, assistant editor of
the Penn Stater, said: “The program tries
to bring people back, to see what is new at
the University. It gives alumni a chance to
get turned on in a classroom situation
without worrying about exams.”
Chesworth said the program introduces
the University to children of alumni and
allows alumni to get reacquainted with
their alma mater.
“Its like an educational vacation,” she
explained
Chester Gnatt, assistant to the director
for Continuing Educational Programs, said
the program gives adult participants a
chance to listen to lectures on various

topics, such as the computer revolution and
the latest in medical technology.
Among the lecturers featured this year
will be Vance Packard, who will share his
impressions of today’s social' trends. Pack
ard, a 1936 University graduate, is the
author of several books concerning the
nation’s problems and social behavior.
Packard’s newest book, which will soon
be released, is “Our Endangered Chil
dren,” a commentary on growing up in a
changing world.
Other AVC faculty members include:
John Burnside, professor of medicine at the
Hershey Medical Center; Helen Guthrie,
professor and department head of the Uni
versity’s nutrition program; Frank Cable,
University lecturer; Robert Holmes, dean
of the College of Arts and Architecture;
Gene M. Love, associate dean of resident
education in the College of Agriculture;
Robert B. Mitchell, associate professor of
biology; Doris M. Seward, assistant to
University President John W. Oswald and
professor of human development; Bruce
Murphy, assistant professor of political
science; and Joseph Stach, professor of
electrical engineering.
Aside from lectures, alumni and their
families are also given free time to enjoy
the University’s various facilities, such as
the the Intramural Building and the golf
courses, Gnatt said.
Gnatt said the participants may also tour
the University and its surrounding areas.
He added that the groups will also visit local
theaters.

—Josephine Chesworth, assistant editor of the Penn Stater
For the first time this year, counselors
from the Career Development and Place
ment Center and the Division of Undergrad
uate Studies will be available to help
college-bound children of alumni who may
have questions concerning which college or
university to attend.
Donna Clemson, editor of the Penn Stater,
said the feedback from alumni on past
vacation colleges has been positive.
Chesworth said many alumni return each
summer, adding that several have received
diplomas for having returned four years in
a row.
Clemson said the idea of an educational
vacation is not new. She said the University
had' a similar program 25 years ago, but
discontinued the program because it was
more “college than vacation.”
Chesworth said that the present program,
re-established in 1975, is modeled after a
similar program at Brown University.
To further enhance the college atmo
sphere, vacationers will be housed on cam
pus. This year they will be housed in
McElwain Hall, in the Pollack/Nittany
/Center area.
The price of the program ranges from $75
for children aged 2 and under, to $275 for
adults. The price includes the added feature
of tickets to theatrical productions.
Registration for the vacation college is
still open, Gilbert said. More than 140 adults
and 40 children have already registered for
the program, she said.
Any questions concerning AVC may be
directed to Heather Gilbert in 104 Old Main.
