British air views on McEnroe

WIMBLEDON, England - The
critics were spreading their claws for
John McEnroe yesterday even before
Wimbledon started.
“Send him packing” and “Crack
down on the bad boys,” screamed the
headlines in the British Sunday pa
pers.
McEnroe, nursing an injured left
shoulder, will be trying to win his
Wimbledon title back from Jimmy
Connors in the big tennis tournament
opening today. They are seeded to
meet in the final July 3.
The critics and the fans still think of
McEnroe as the man who argues with
officials and slams balls and gets
fined for his court behavior.
Some say McEnroe is a victim of
the British press, which first coined
the name Superbrat. McEnroe him
self argues that the British press
distorts what happens on court and
Boston upends Tampa
BOSTON (AP) Doug Woodward, making his first
start of the United States Football League season at
quarterback, fired two scoring passes and Dennis Johnson
had two touchdowns'to lead the Boston Breakers to a 24-17
victory yesterday over the Tampa Bay Bandits.
Boston’s victory in the league’s only game of the day left
both teams with 10-6 records. The Breakers improved
their chances for the wild-card playoff berth, while the
Bandits dropped a full game behind first-place Chicago in
the Central Division.
The Breakers never trailed, but the game was close all
the way after they took a 14-3 first-quarter lead. Johnson

Britain’s top sports officials aired
their views on McEnroe.
Harry Gibbs, Britain’s top boxing
referee, said in an interview with the
Sunday People: “None of them, not
even Muhammad Ali, would speak to
me the way McEnroe speaks to um
pires.
“If I had to handle him I’d try to be
understanding. The first time he
played up I’d say ‘Come on, John,
you’re too big for that sort of thing.’
But if that didn’t work, I’d put the
screw down.”
Clive Thomas, one of the world’s
top soccer referees, told the same
newspaper: “I’d love to have a go at
handling McEnroe. I wouldn’t stand
for any of his nonsense.”
Sir Brian Burnett, chairman of the
All-England Club which runs the
Wimbledon tournament, warned that
strong measures will be taken to deal

As armies of workers got the fa
mous courts ready for today’s first
ground matches, it was clear that
Wimbledon was ready to pounce on
trouble makers. '
Fred Perry, the last Briton to win
the Wimbledon singles title 47 years
ago, said, “I can see it reaching the
point where someone says to a player
like McEnroe:‘That’s it, you’re out.’ ”
Connors and McEnroe spent the
last two days before Wimbledon prac
ticing quietly. McEnroe gave no indi
cation of the-state of his shoulder
injury, which he said two days ago
was “so-so.”

scored both touchdowns in the period, on an 11-yard pass
from Woodward following a lost fumble by Tampa Bay’s
Gary Anderson on the first play from scrimmage and a 2-
yard dive, while Zenon Andrusyhyn kicked a 35-yard field
goal for the Bandits.
Woodward, who has been with the team all season and
threw only three passes before yesterday, went all the way
in place of Johnny Walton, who has a strained left knee.
The attendance on a sunny day with temperatures in the
80s was 15,530, Boston’s third highest in eight home
games.

NEW YORK - Billy Martin ap
peared to find a small island of
safety yesterday in the sea of con
troversy surrounding his third ten
ure as manager of the New York
Yankees.
On the brink of losing his job over
a clubhouse row with a New York
Times researcher, Martin met Sun
day morning with club owner
George Steinbrenner.
After the meeting, it appeared
that an American League investi
gation of the incident would come
up empty.
The New York Times lodged a
protest with Steinbrenner over the
incident which occurred Friday
afternoon. The researcher, Debo
rah Henschel, complained to her
boss that Martin cursed at her
while she was doing a Times survey
regarding the All-Star Game.
On Saturday, three members of
the Yankees, coach Don Zimmer,
pitcher George Frazier and assis
tant trainer Mark Letendre, backed
Martin in his contention that he had
not sworn at the woman.
“Today, two people went into
George’s office, a reporter and a
photographer, to tell him that I did
not swear at the woman,” Martin
said.
