Flyer owner seeks
share of Eagles
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -
Ed Snider, owner of the Phila
delphia Flyers, says he is consid
ering buying a 48 percent share of
the Philadelphia Eagles football
team but no offer has been made.
“Basically, all we did was take a
look at the thing,” Snider said
from, his home Wednesday night.
“It’s gone no further than that; it’s
no more complex than that. This is
all very premature. There’s noth
ing to report ”
Snider added that he and advi
sors in his corporation, Spectacor,
had no timetable for reaching a
decision.
Susan Fletcher, daugher of Ea
gles owner Leonard Tose, was
quoted in the Philadelphia Daily
News on Wednesday as saying
that Tose has offered to sell up to
48 percent of the ownership of his
NFL team. Tose intends to retain
majority ownership, his daughter
said.
Snider’s Spectacor organization
includes the Spectrum arena, the
PRISM cable TV service,, the
SpectaGuard security service, and
the Showcase group of retail
stores, along with the Flyers’ NHL
team.
“Spectacor looks at a lot of
opportunties, and we’re looking at
the Eagles the same as we would
any other opportunity,” Fred Sha-

“We’re still very much in the
analysis stage, trying to come to
some conclusions. When you look
at anything, there are all kinds of
questions that come up. ,That’s

Sha bel said that Snider, a for

the Eagles, remained interested in
the team.
“He was very much involved
many, many years ago,” Shabel
said. “And he is very appreciative
of what the Eagles have accom

Fletcher said, however, that
three other groups are also nego

the Eagles. She declined to name
them.
NFL spokesman Jim Heffernan,
in an interview with the Philadel

would wait and see what Tose
proposed.
' He said he could see no prob

were trying to buy a majority

Fletcher said she wants to go

deal before the beginning of the

ST. LOUIS (AP) First baseman
Keith Hernandez admits he was “a
little shocked, to say the least” when
he learned that he had been traded by
the St. Louis Cardinals to the New
York Mets. But the five-time Gold
Glove winner had expected to be
traded sometime this year.
“I'm disappointed,” Hernandez
said. “I love it here and the fans were
great to me. The hard part is that my.
family gets uprooted. But that’s part
of the game
“I knew that one day I would be
traded.”
However, fans at Busch Stadium to
see the Cardinals game with the
Philadelphia Phillies were less re

for right-handed pitchers Neil Allen
and Rick Owneby.
“Who are we going to put in his

CLEVELAND (AP) Billy Martin, in his third
stormy tenure as manager of the New York Yan
kees, confirmed last night that he met with team
owner George Steinbrenner, but he declined to
reveal details of the meeting.
Rumors have been swirling this week that Mar
tin, who signed a five-year, $1.5 million contract
with the Yankees before the start of this season,
will be fired again.
Steinbrenner fired Martin once and Martin bare
ly beat him to the punch a second time when he quit
when his firing was reportedly imminent. .
“The meeting had nothing to do with my job,”
Mdrtin said before yesterday’s game with the
Cleveland Indians. He refused to elaborate.

Louis fans less than reserved over Hernandez trade
more, I ain’t coming.”
Eddie Householder of Jacksonville,
Ark., had driven nearly 400 miles to
see the Cardinals play. “If the Cards
trade Hernandez, they can give up on
the series,” he said. “They need
hitters. They don’t need a.pitcher.”
Hernandez, a .299 lifetime hitter,
drove in 105 runs in 1979 when he
shared the National League Most
Valuable Player award with Pitts
burgh’s Willie Stargell. He led the
league in batting with a .344 average.
Hfernandez was a key figure in the
Cardinals’ successful run last season
for their fir,st world championship
since 1967. However, he had driven in
only 28 runs in the team’s first 56
games in 1983, and he had batted only
about .200 with runners in scoring
position.

problems Manager Whitey Herzog
has been wrestling with all season.

A Yankees source said Steinbrenner, who owns
American Ship Building'Co. in nearby Lorain, Ohio,
met with Martin for about 90 minutes Wednesday
night, after the Yankees snapped a four-game
losing streak with an 8-5 victory over the Indians.
The victory evened New York’s record for the
season at 30-30.
Steinbrenner no longer was in Cleveland yester
day, the source said.
Speculation persisted that Martin’s job was in
trouble, in part because of the Yankees’ recent
problems on the field and in part because of his
reportedly questionable work habits.
- According to some reports, Steinbrenner has
been upset with Martin because he allegedly was
taking pregame naps in the clubhouse, was not
communicating well with his coaches and was
permitting some of his players to remain in the

The Hernandez trade also paves the
way for Herzog to move George Hen
drick from right field to first base.
And that clears the way for David
Green or Andy Van Slyke to play
regularly in the. outfield.
. The lefthanded-hitting Van Slyke,
22, was batting .364 for St. Louis’ top
farm club when he was called up by
the Cardinals this 1 week.
“We’ve got Greenie, Willie (Mc-
Gee) and Van Slyke who all can play
left field, center field and right field,”
Herzog said. “I might let them all
play three innings at each one.”
Whether the Cardinals got equal
value in return for Hernandez re
mains unanswered. Allen is 2-7 with
two saves and a 4.50 earned-run aver
age. And Rick Owribey, another right
hander, is 1-3 with a 4.67 ERA.
But Herzog points to Allen’s 69
saves in four-plus seasons with
Mets.
“If his stats weren’t bad you
Mi;,
couldn’t get him,” Herzog said. “All I
know is that he’s got one helluva
arm.” '
The trade came as something of a
surprise because it was thought that
with Lonnie Smith in a drug rehabili
tation center, the Cardinals couldn’t
afford to lose two .300 hitters in the
same week.
“The Lonnie Smith thing didn’t
enter into our thinking because of
Van Slyke,” said Cardinals General
Manager Joe McDonald.
“It’s hard to trade a player of
Keith’s stature,” McDonald said.
“But we’ve demonstrated in advance
that we have traded many popular
players like Ken Keitz and Garry
Templeton and Ted Simmons. We’re
not afraid to do what is best for this
club.”
Herzog said he weighed the delicate
balance between pitching and hitting.
“We had to decide if we were going
to have enough hitting if we did this.
Or did we have enough pitching if we
didn’t do it? We need pitching.”
clubhouse after games started.
Steinbrenner also was reportedly upset because
Martin failed to attend a recent workout ordered by
the owner. ■
“I think when you’re a leader, people tend to
want to knock you down. Everybody has a skeleton
in his closet, but I don’t do those things people say I
do," Martin said, adding that the rumors are
different every year.
“I go to church on Sunday and the Lord knows
where I am. I don’t care what people say.”
Martin, who fielded ground balls and worked out
with his players before last night’s contest, made
light of the rumors about his job.
“Yeah, I’m going to be fired ibefore the game
tonight,”’ he said with a slight smile. “I don’t pay no
attention to rumors.”

Nicolette was raised in Palmer
land. He grew up in Mount Pleasant,
about 20 miles from Latrobe, where
Palmer lived.
“I’ve always wanted to play golf
with him,” said the 26-year-old Nic
olette, who was born when Palmer,
now 53, was 27.
Nicolette said he was a little ner
vous about playing with his boyhood
idol, but that the fear pumped him up.
“I hit my drive 30 feet past him on
the first hole,” Nicolette said.
Things continued to go well for
several holes. Then on No. 6, a par 3,
they went awry, and he took a double
bogey after hitting his drive under a
tree.

“You can’t say enough about him.”
Nicolette finished with a 76, and
never got a birdie. He had three
bogeys on the back nine.
Palmer, meanwhile, seemed to
have his magic working for a while,
only to see it shattered with bogeys on
No. 9, 17 and 18. He finished with a -
over 74.
“No. 9 is probably the likeliest bir
die hole on the course, and 17 is close
to the next,” Palmer said. “Those
holes you have to play well, and if I
had played them well I would have
had a respectable round.”
Palmer looked weary after the
round was over.
Asked whether the heat 84 de
grees bothered him, he said, “No.”
Then he looked up, chuckled, and
asked, “What do you think I am, an
old man?”
Asked if he heard any echoes on
this famed course, where he has
played so often in his career.
“Oh, memories?” he replied.
“There are so many they are all
jumbled up. I can go back to the early
40s if you wanted to, or the mid or late
405.”
He smiled again. “Or the mid-50s or
60s or 70s. I can go back a long time, a
lot of memories.”
Nicolette has few memories of Oak
mont. He had not played Oakmont
since he was 15, and he played just
three practice rounds, deciding to
play no more because the course was
playing so tough.

Italians: no chance to win Cup
By DICK BRINSTER
AP Sports Writer
NEWPORT, R.I. Gianfranco Alberini may be
managing a syndicate that has the backing of 17 major
Ralian corporations to the tune of some $5 million, but
he isn’t foolish enough to believe that money can buy an
America’s Cup.
“We have no chance to win,” he said when asked if he
thought the first Italian effort in the 132-year history of
sailing’s most prestigious event would be successful.
“But we’re here, and we came to learn how to sail 12-
meter yachts ”
And learn they will when trials begin tomorrow for
foreign competitors from seven syndicates with de
signs on becoming the first non-Americans ever to win
the Cup. The Italians, their enormous budget
notwithstanding, simply don’t figure to match up well
against the likes of battle-seasoned syndicates such as
the Australians and British.
Nontheless, Alberini wants the world to know that his
country finally has made it to the big show of sailing.

An attempt to send an Italian boat was made initially in
1957, but there was little in the way of money or interest
in the country
Now, through the support of the Aga Khan and the
Costa Smeralda Yacht Club of Sardina, the light blue
Azzurra will sail the waters of Rhode Island Sound in
hopes of winning a few races.
“We have made a financial commitment that will
last for 10 years,” Alberini said. “There was no reason
to raise all this money just to come over here once. We
like to think we are here to stay.”
Among the backers or the syndicate are Alitalia, the
giant international air carrier, and Cinzano a large
importer of wines and spirits.
The Italians had been doing well last week in tuneups
against the French boat France 3 and were planning
some final races with top flight contender Australia II
before the serious competition was to began Saturday.
“That’s when we’ll find out how good we are,”
Alberini said, adding with a laugh that he wanted Italy
to be remembered in the United States for something
other than “spaghetti and some bad things.”
