AP Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) Roberto Duran could step back on the glory road or begin life looking back at his mostly illustrious past when he challenges Davey. Moore for the World Boxing Association junior middle weight championship tonight at Madison Square Garden. “He has experience, 70 fights (actually, 79), two world championships,” the 24-year-old Moore, a' champion with just 12 pro fights, said Tuesday at a news conference. “You’ve got to give him respect. But that doesn’t mean he can beat me.” Las Vegas bookmakers haven’t'made a i Pick a Hick, i £ Reviews to help you choose, • ads define the times. I Collegian betting line on the scheduled 15-round fight, but one said that if he handled any action, he would make Duran a 2-1 favorite. “I don’t believe two or three years ago a guy with 12 fights would have anything to do with me,” said Duran, who will be 32 the day of the fight, which is scheduled to start between 10:30 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. EDT. It will be shown on closed-circuit television and on pay-per-view TV in certain areas, as well as on a delayed basis by CBS Sunday. But a little more 2'A years ago, the fear some fighter called “Hands of Stone" blotted a truly shining career when he quit on his feet in the eighth round of a World Boxing Council welterweight title rematch against Sugar Ray Leonard. There are no excuses for the past.” As for the future, Duran said, “I’m not thinking I will lose, but in case I would lose, I would retire.” A lot of people called for Duran to retire after the embarrassment against Leonard. But he wouldn’t quit, although his first three fights after the Leonard rematch did little to change the minds of those who said he was through. In uninspired performances, Duran scored 111 ~ 10-round decisions over Nino Gonzalez and Luigi Minchillo in 1981. Then Jan. 20,1982, he was easily outpointed over 15 rounds in a title bid against Wilfred Benitez, the WBC super welterweight (junior middleweight) cham pion. After that fight, Carlos Eleta, Duran’s longtime manager, split with the fighter, saying he should retire. So Luis Henriquez, a longtime Duran aide, became his manager for a 10-round fight against Kirkland Laing of Britain, which Was promoted by Don King. Laing won, and Henriquez and King left Duran, saying he should retire. Duran considered the decisions of Eleta, Henriquez and King acts of betrayal, and turned to promoter Bob Arum.
