Museum of Art Richard
Mayhew's recent paintings
showing his gentle sensibility
to landscape, space and time
hang on the 3rd floor. Soft
greens and blues melt together
creating inviting, pastorial •
places that feel like
summertime, thrugh June 19.
Architectural artifacts and
sculpture from India culled
from the Museum's collection
and the collection of the
Herbert F. Johnson - Museum of
Art,,Cornell University, feature
two carved sandstone
doorjams from a temple
complex in Sarnath, shown
together for the first time,
through June 19. Selections
from the permanent collection
include American landscape
and figurative paintings from
the early 19th century to the
late '7os. Contemporary
Japanese ceramics are
displayed featuring a recent
acquisition, the•Kato Vase,
made of unglazed absorbent
clay by Kiyoyuki Kato, and
charabteristic bf much of the ,
post-World War II art in Japan
that mixes native and American
artistic influences.
Zoller Abdul Rahim Al-Wakil
displays his small and
monumental bronze and marble
sculpture this weekend only in
his MFA exhibition. Works like
"Heart is Beating," "Storm
Before War" and "Humility"
expose the Eastern thinking
that exudes from this sensitive
man. The reception for the
artist is tonight from 5-7. in the
gallery and all are welcome.
Chambers Handmade paper
emerges in a wide variety of
style including bright colorful
three dimensional wall
hangings, to simple cutouts
creating shadow and image
from the material alone, to
paper and rusting iron
combinations, to books and
drawings and prints and large
suspended sculpture.
Kern Scott Smith cheers the
gallery with colorful, bold
flowers and patterns in his
prints and painted ceramic tiles
creating energy and joy,
through May 20. Smith's prints
can also be seen•in the Dean's
Conference Room in the Arts
Building, but the room is often
in use and otherwise locked.
The work and the room are
interesting, so ask the nice
ladies in the Dean's office for
the key. Large, soft pastels by
Carolyn Metcalf, displayinb a
classical architectural theme
that invites us to what rests
beyond, hang through May 20.
The Ukranian Club reveals folk
art traditions with embroidery,
eggs, dolls and ceramics.

Sunday opens a special three
day exhibition of tapestries
from Swaziland that shows how
the weaving industry has
expanded and yet maintained a
creative and traditional outlet
for uneducated women of the
country. Marqueting, using
wood veneer to make pictures,
is beautifully demonstrated by
Kenneth T. Arnold from
Columbus, Ohio, in the
Browsing Gallery. The
landscapes are calm and
stunning; the graceful grain
moves like a sunset. Slavic Folk
Art fills the display cases in Art
Alley with colorful dolls,
clothing, ceramics and more.
Distinguishing patterns are
revealed from the Polish and
Czechoslovakian artifacts.
Pattee Architecture
dominates the prints by
Thomas Cartney and Peter
Lucchetti, who uses deep
blacks arid high contrast, in the
East Corridor Gallery, through

entitled "China" hang in
Lending Services through May
16.
Robeson Cultural Center
African, Nigerian and Afro-
American art in mixed media,
including leather, carvings and
photos, are displayed in
coordination with the Black
Arts Festival.
Earth and Mineral• Science
Museum and Art Gallery A
continuous exhibit of rocks,
uncut, polished, and glowing in
the Fluorescent Room, are
displayed with paintings about
the Mineral Industry.
Old Main The walls are
covered with important
American frescoes painted by
Henry Varnum Poor who
worked using monies raised by
students in the 19405. This
administrative building also
displays student effort in the.
basement (room 1) where
Stephen J. Bizal hangs recent
watercolors. His paintings
show how he. is filled with
content, tranquility, energy and
awe from nature, and although
the space is difficult to reach,
try. The best door to use is the
back one on the west side, near
Schwab, marked IN.

Always showing new art, this'
downtowh gallery is still
impressively dominated with
local work, including large,
serene ceramic vessels by Dr.
Beittel; inviting, gentle interiors
by Walter Hatke; fiber sculpture
by Mary Tower; and black and
white photos by former photo
journ professor Ed Leos.
