The men's track team will be in
New Brunswick, N.J., this week
end for the Rutgers Relays, their
final competition before the all
imporfant Fenn Relays.
The meet 'begins at 1 this af
ternoon, with the individual ruti
ning events taking place today,
and field events and relays tomor
row. Between 30 and 35 schools are
expected to compete in the Rutg
ers Relays.
With the important Penn Relays
beginning next Thursday, many of
the teams in the Rutgers Relays
will bekusing this weekend's match
as a preparatory meet.
Penn State Head Coach Harry
Groves sAid the Rutgers meet is
basically used to get teams used to
competition they will face at the
Penn Relays
"This meet isn't actually a tone
up type meet for Penn," Groves
said, "but it will be used by teams
to work on things that they have to
work on in competition for Penn.
When you go to Penn, you're going
against the rest of the country."
The temperdture in New Bruns
wick' for this weekend is supposed
to be in th 4 50s, which will be
considerably better than it was for
last weekend's Nittany Lion Re
lays or for this week's practices.

Groves said since all the teams
competiting at Rutgers are from
the North and Northeastern part
of the country, everyone has had
the same problems as Penn State
with the weather.
, "We're all working around the
weather," Groves said. "As long
as everyone is even in terms of the
weather, I don't think there will be
any problems.
"We're getting adequate work
outs this week, considering every
thing. We have some people with
head colds and stuff like that, but
that'll pass," he said.
In conjunction with the upcoming
Penn Relays, the 11th Annual
Penn Relays Marathon was held
last Sunday in Philadelphia.
Geoff Root, representing the
Spiked Shoe Club of Penn State,
placed third out of 700 marathon
entrants with a time of 2 hours, 38
minutes. The Spiked Shoe Club
placed second in the team compe
tition at the marathon
Root finished the 26-mile, 385-
yard course only 12 minutes be
hind winner Vince Touey. Other
Lions who finished high were Dave
Lucas and Bill Malchano.
Lucas ran the course in 2 hours,
39 minutes, to finish 11th overall.
Malchano placed 15th with a time
of 2 hours, 41 minutes.

Netwomen host 3 strong teams

If last week's Middle States Tournament was a
letdown for the women's tennis team, then this
weekend could be outright depressing.
After finishing a disappointing ninth in the Mid
dle States Tournament held in Trenton, N.J., the
Lady Lions will face three teams in two days this
weekend here at Penn State.
None of the teams Penn State faces will be easy,
and neither is the Lady Lions' schedule in the meet.
Tomorrow they face James Madison and then take
on William & Mary and then on Sunday they take on
West Virginia. •
"We'll have our work cut out for us, that's for
sure," Coach Jan Bortner -said. "We're going to
need a super effort in order to hang in there with
these schools.

What can they do for an encore?
After winning the NCAA title the
women's fencing team hopes to pick
up where it left off when the Lady
Lions travel to Philadelphia for the
Csiszar Open.
The Csiszar Open is one of four
North American Circuit Cup tourna
ments which points can be earned
toward the Olympics.
Jana Angelakis, who won the Csis
zar last year and is the defending two
time North American Circuit Cham- P
pion, said she is optimistic.
"I'm confident I'll do well," An
gelakis said. "I've, been training ev
ery day and I'm in very good
condition physically. I came in ninth
in the Helena Mayer tournament in
San Francisco (the last North Ameri
can Circuit Cup tournament) and
hope to improve on that performance.
I'm not happy with coming in ninth,"
she said.
In this year's other Circuit Cup
tournaments, Angelakis won the
Michele Aleaux Open and finished
second in the D'Asaro Open. The
North American Circuit Cup title is
awarded based on the best three of
the four tournament results and An
gelakis is Currently in first place for
the title.
Since winning the National Colle
giate Athletic Association
championship, the team hasn't been
practicing too heavily. The Lady Li
ons have been practicing regularly
this week and last week and they
have fenced against the men's team
whenever possible.

Kathy Holleran, James Madison's No. 1 singles
player, won the Eastern Regional singles title this
fall. The 'Lady Dukes second singles player Ingrid
Hetz is also ranked high in the Eastern region of the
country.
If that doesn't seem a tough enough challenge for
Penn State, William & Mary is even stronger and
West Virginia is one of the top teams in Penn
State's Atlantic 10 conference

"A team often goes into a slump
after a major win and I was con
cerned, that would happen after we
won the NCAA title," Head Coach
Beth Alphin said. "So I thought the
team needed a break."
"I think the break was more impor
tant than fencing everyday would
have been," Lady Lion April Miller
said. "We had been fencing practical
ly everyday for about six months and
we needed a break."
Miller is battling to keep a spot on
the U.S. National team and a good
performance could assure her that
spot. Miller is currently No. 10 in the
country and the top 12 fencers qualify
for the national team.
"I'm going into the this tournament
relaxed," April Miller. "In the Hele
na Mayer I was too nervous and
finished 24th, and in the Michele

Lady Lion Captain Sue Whiteside said. "Hopefully,
we'll put our super hard effort to use. We're in top
condition physically."
"We're going into this weekend with a positive.
outlook. Our confidence is growing more and more
with each practice," Sue Whiteside added.
An additional challenge to Whiteside will come
when she faces Cherie Dow of William & Mary.
Dow transferred from Penn State two years ago
and is now the Indians' No. 1 singles player.
"Cherie was my former doubles partner my
sophomore year and I'm really looking foward to
facing her on Saturday," Sue Whiteside said.
Last year Penn State lost to William & Mary 8-1.
The Lady Lions didn't fare much better either
against West Virginia losing 6-3 and to James
Madison 5-4.
"We're really pumped up for our matches and
determined to do well, Janet Whiteside said. "

I'm calmer and much more confident,

regards the open as a chance to watch
some good fencing and have a good

"Maybe someday I'll get back into
fencing, but for now I'm going to
enjoy this weekend," she said.
In addition to Angelakis, Miller,
and Perna, Alyson Frost, Hope Mey
er and Hanne Skattebol will be fenc
ing for Penn State.
