Loop adds van
for handicapped
Handicapped students now have an additional van to
take them to their classes and, if prearranged, that van
will make special runs along the Campus Loop route,
said the coordinator of Services for the Disabled.
Brenda Hameister said the new van is equipped with
a raised roof and lift for students in wheelchairs. The
van is painted like the Campus Loop buses and has the
wheelchair symbol to distinguish it from other Univer
sity vans. It joins the van service that has been in
operation since the fall of 1979.
If Campus Loop bus stops are accessible and the
weather is good, students are required to go to the stops
to be picked up, Hameister said. During had weather or
if the stops are inaccessible, students may call Fleet
Operations at 865-7571 to arrange for door-to-door
service.
Fleet Operations will send a car to pick up anyone
who cannot use the van, she said.
The purpose of the van is to "try to provide equiva
lent services for disabled persons," Hameister said.
The van is available each term for faculty, employees,
parents and visitors for a 25-dent fare. Students may
also use a Campus Loop bus pass.
Keith Klaus (7th-accotinting), a regular van passen
ger, said the it is a great help.
"The scheduling is really good and they are willing to
take me wherever I want to go," he said.'
