By MARCY MERMEL
Collegian Staff Writer
State College is not the only
place one can find people celebrat
ing the Nittany Lion football tea
m's first national championship.
The University has received con
gratulations and honors from
across the state.
On Monday, Gov. Dick Thorn
burgh proclaimed Jan. 2-8 Penn
State National Football
Championship Week. At Monday's
pep rally on Old Main Lawn, Uni
versity President John W. Oswald
announced that he had received a
call from Thornburgh about the
decision.
Yesterday, Oswald received the
official proclamation.
"Never allowing themselves to
be counted as underdogs, this out
standing team provided Pennsyl
vania sports fans with a fierce
sense of pride while bringing hon
or and recognition to the entire
Commonwealth," the announce
ment states.
"Indeed, our Nittany Lions have
proven to the,nation that Pennsyl
vania continues to be the 'State of
Champions.' "
The document is signed by the
governor and carries his seal.
Mary Dunkle, manager of the
news bureau of the University
Department of Public Informa

Sugar Bowl memoribilia sales high nationwide
By REBECCA ALBERT
Collegian Staff Writer
All across town and campus, items ranging from
mittens to mugs emblazoned with the magic words
"We're No. 1" -= are selling like Hurricanes on
Bourbon Street.
"At Last!" a bumper sticker sold at Balfour
House, 326 E. College Ave., expresses the senti
ment of many. People have been rushing to buy
anything that reflects Happy Valley's recent topic
of conversation Penn State's victory in the Sugar
Bowl and the winning of the National
\ Championship.
"We've had requests for just about everything
T-shirts, hats, blankets, totebags just about
anything," said Barb Greenawalt, a clerk at Bal
four House.
Balfour House sells five or six different styles of
long and short sleeve T-shirts sporting the national
championship motif, she said. Everything has been
going well.
"We've been getting calls from all over Flor
ida, Texas, New York," Greenawalt said. "People
have been asking what we have and how they can
get it.
"We can hardly keep up with the rush."
Balfour House isn't the only place that offers
satisfaction to Nittany Lion fans afflicted with blue
and white fever. The Student Book Store, 330 E.
College Ave., has seven different styles of national
championship long and short sleeve T-shirts and

She said seven more styles will be arriving at the

"We got shirts in on Monday at 2 p.m. and the
customers were taking the .stuff out of our hands
before we could price them," Adams said. "I think
it's important to be the first to have them."
The Student Book Store also has mesh football
shirts, she said.
"We're getting bumper stickers, license plates,
caps, plastic cups and pennants," Adams said.
"The suppliers are understanding and are getting
the stuff out as, fast as we call them."
Ruth Raimo, boutique buyer for University Book

The store will also be getting a large cardboard

"As far as I know, we'll be the only ones to have
that," Raimo added.

out fast enough."
Lion's Pride has two different types of baseball
caps and four different prints on their long and
short sleeve T-shirts and sweatshirts, Pinkasavage
said. The store is also carrying v-neck national
championship T-shirts.
At McLanahan's, 414 E. College Ave., sqme of the
most popular items these past few days have been
the buttons that say "How 'bout them Nittany
Lions". and "Herschel is a Walker but Warner is a
Runner," said Grace Mehalick, assistant manager.
They also have long and short sleeve T-shirts and
mugs, she said.
"Once we get everything in, it will go well," she
said.
Action Sports, 120 E. College Ave., got shirts in
Tuesday and not many are left, salesman Terry
Stark said.
"We'll be getting more in," he said.; `About five
or six different styles of long and short sleeve T
shirts are coming in."
Ann McMullen, buyer for the Penn State
Bookstores on campus, said sales of national
championship memorabilia have been "outstand
ing."
The on-campus bookstores, like many of the
bookstores downtown, offer golf shirts, long- and
shirt-sleeved T-shirts, ceramic mugs, pennants,
