12—The Daily Collegian Thursday, Dec. 16, 1982 Future dim for pro sports Death of pro competition may be on its way "Professional sports are doomed to extinction, they provide no coun terpoint to anything in modern socie ty," said my instructor. "We have reached the saturation point with sports entertainment. They're on 24 hours a day on ESPN (entertainment and sports programming network). They prove absolutely nothing except that the people playing can play bet ter than anyone else." It was with this dire prediction that the eventual demise of the entire professional sports world was pre dicted in a class of mine last week. I think my instructor may have something there. Most professional sports broadcasts leave me a little cold. I know I am not alone. Many of us are already turning down the audio portion of professional sports pro grams to enjoy music and give our own analysis of the . action. Partic ularly if Howard Cosell is broadcast ing. Historically, professional sports showed us an ideal, the best players available making the best plays pos sible., It gave people something to shoot for in their own games. You know what I mean if you have ever been in the room with a real tennis addict while Wimbledon was on TV. Too many of us no longer partici pate in anything remotely resembling the sports we watch. Some of you are going to disagree. In the collegiate age group this generalization may be a little broad. Think back to your neighborhoods at home though, and the guys who earn a living, if they still have a job. When was the last time you saw any nine-to-fiver get into a serious game of anything besides poker? Anymore: professional sports are about as exciting as the production line at an automotive assembly plant. Although there was no shortage of sports to fill the TV sports news and sports network programming during the various strikes, people were re luctant to watch new sports. They squeeze us at the gate, shake us down at the souvenir stands and rip us off at the refreshment stands. We are blasted with loud commer cials when we watch sports on TV. It's just not fun anymore, it's busi ness big business. Players no longer seem to play for the love of the sport. What message do professional athletes send to kids today? Practice hard, play with cour age, and pride, respect your team and coach or grab everything you can get, get a good agent and score big? Everyone has to eat, but profes sional sports seem to have lost a lot in the shuffle for the big money. Drug scandals and the like have become common. Graft has even reached the college ranks at many schools ensur ing a corrupt element in professional sports for some time to come. Sports, have been corrupt for years so I don't propose that we should all wail and moan and sermonize the prostitution of professional sports. The people responsible know them selves just how far gone things are. Athletes and fans just won't admit that the buckmongers, who have no respect for heart, sacrifice, desire or other concepts of true sport, are making the most out of their, own short-sighted, money-oriented. game plan. It took "homecook ing" to lure young Ray Perkins from the glamorous world of pro football to the chair of his old coach, Paul "Bear" Bryant, at the University of Alabama. . "It's always been a dream and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity," the 41-year-old coach of the New' York Giants said yesterday in explaining why he took a cut in salary and abandoned a new three-year contract to replace the winningest coach in college football history. • • "I am returning to my alma mater a great university. I am going back to the place (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) where my two sons were born and where I spent five of the best years of my life." Perkins will complete this fourth year with the Giants before returning to the site of his undergraduate days where he will renew association with his former mentor, who remains as athletic director. "I'm following repeat, following the greatest coach in college football," he said, referring to Bry ant's 322 college victories in a 38-year career, 25 at Alabama. "It is a great break for me to follow a man like that. He has been like a father to me." Perkins appeared at mid-morning press conference at the Giants Stadium. Attired in a brown suit and wearing spectacles, he said he had met earlier with the players and told them the news. "Did they say anything?" somebody asked. "No," he replied. "What was their reaction did you read anything into their faces?" a reporter asked. 'Bear' draws Liberty Bowl fans By WOODY BAIRD Associated Press Writer MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- Paul "Bear" Bryant's retirement at Ala bama will focus special attention on this year's Liberty Bowl, his last football game as coach, bowl offi cial said yesterday. "I leave that to you people." Perkins is a serious man, frugal with words. Some times he will ponder a question for seeming minutes before replying. "How do you follow the greatest coach of all-time?" a reporter asked "I don't have the answer, but I'll try," Perkins replied. Was he intimidated by Bryant? Perkins stared at the questioner with steel eyes and then responded: "If I was scared or intimidated I wouldn't take the job. You'd have to be a little crazy to do that. I admire him, yes; love him, yes; intimidated by him, no'. And, no, I will not try to emulate him. "I won't even try. Nobody can imitate Coach Bryant. I'll just be myself. The greatest lessons I learned from him were self-discipline and desire to excel. I don't worry about being successful. I know I will be." Perkins said that while he had read speculation, there had been no contact about the job until last Thursday when he was called by the university presi dent about an interview. He flew down Sunday after speaking with his Giants bosses. "They knew how deeply I wanted the job," he said. "If it was any place else, any other college team could not lure me from the New York Giants. Nothing could have, I don't believe, kept me from making this decision. "I have this philosophy. One is awarded or creates for himself an opportunity for what he wants to do. Then he should do it. "This is what I wanted with all my heart." handle this," said A.F. "Bud" Dud ley, executive director of the Liber ty Bowl. Dudley said Bryant's retirement also will increase TV viewing of the game between Alabama and Illi nois on Dec. 29.
