Students oppose dorm solicitation By LAURIE JONES Collegian Staff Writer Most students favor the Universi ty's present closed-door policy re garding solicitation, the Association of Residence Hall Students said last night, in a report of an informal sur vey conducted to gauge student opin ion. The policy, which was adopted Nov. 19, prohibits demonstrations of prod ucts to groups in the residence halls, except demonstrations by registered student organizations and residence hall house governments. Individual sales on a one-to-one basis are still allowed in students' rooms. Jennifer Gould, vice president of ARHS, represented student opinion at a hearing last week concerning the lawsuit filed by American Future Systems Inc. against the University. Gould represented the position that given the choice between a totally open-door policy or a totally closed door policy, students would choose the latter. The reports from the area rep resentatives supported Gould's posi tion. Judi Smith, Centre Halls president, said students in her area did not want businesses soliciting in the dorms and did not feel their rights were being violated. Dan Ronca, East Halls president, said "if the students are pushed to make a decision, they would rather see things closed." Representatives from South, West and North halls said students from their areas also supported the policy. In other business, Pollock-Nittany President Glenn Glass said the Centre Halls Residence Association wrote a letter to Art Constantino concerning the status of Alpha Omi cron Pi, a newly-formed sorority which requested a suite in Heister Hall. The association was not in favor of granting a suite to the sorority, suggesting that they be placed in Nittany or East halls. Stan Latta, assistant director of the Office of Residential Life Programs, said "all they want right now is a suite for next year." The Office of Housing and Food Service Operations will decide tomor row whether to grant their request, Latta said. North Halls President Edward Hess also reported that North Week will be held April 24 to 30. The Dorm Contract Acceptance Committee reported that it is looking for an alternative to either the first come/first-served or the 11th-line lot tery systems.
