NFL
strike
Eagles' Reggie Wilkes
By RALPH BERNSTEIN
AP Sports Writer
PHILADELPHIA (AP).— Reggie
Wilkes awakened at 7:45 a.m., the
same time he does every practice
day, but on Wednesday it was differ
ent.
"It's funny, on the days I did have
to go to practice I wanted to go back
to sleep," said the Philadelphia
Eagles' linebacker on this second
day of the players' strike against
the National Football League.
"This morning I was alive, gung
ho. I was anxious to go to work,"
said Wilkes, a third-round draft
choice of the Eagles in 1978.
"All of a sudden I realized there
was no work to go to," Wilkes said
somewhat. sadly. "Frankly, it's bor
ing."
So Wilkes had breakfast with his
wife, a fourth-year student at
Temple University Medical School,
then said he left the house three
times during the morning to pick
up a newspaper, go to a record shop,
and to purchase a movie cassette.
Wilkes indicated he was settling
in for a long strike.

said Wilkes who was a dean's list
student at Georgia Tech and who
has been accepted at Morehouse

hopes to attend after his football

Wilkes said he had been excited
about the possibility of working out

that half of them were leaving town,
and others were going to try to keep
in condition on their own. .
He said he probably_ would do

"I'll work out with weights. Also
I'll run in the area near my home,"
he said.
Although Wilkes said he didn't
want a strike, he made It clear that
he was 100 percent behind the walk

Grier returns to State with message
By JOHN SEVERANCE
Collegian Sports Writer
Instead of sacking quarterbacks,
acting in movies, making television
appearances, and doing needlepoint,
Rosey Grier has a new purpose in life
to serve and praise God.
Grier returned to Penn State to give ,
his special message. He spoke last
night and Tuesday at the HUB Ball
room in a program sponsored by the
Lamb Fellowship.
"I have only been back four times
since I graduated (1956)," Grier said.
"This time I feel I'm back for the
right reason. One time I came back
and they were holding hostages in the
dormitories. I came here with Lamb
Fellowship for the right reason. I feel
like I'm a big brother coming back to
visit all my little sisters and broth
ers."
-Grier has noticed a lot of changes
since returning to his alma mater.
"They moved my football field,"
settling down
a strike. But there is one and we all
go together."
"This is no time for a cat and
mouse game," he said.
Wilkes said he was "really disap
pointed" in Jack Donlan, the NFL
Management Council representa
tive at the bargaining table, but also
added he was "disappointed in ev
erybody, the Players', Association
and management.
"I'm not pointing the finger at
either side, but if I did I guess it
would be at Donlan. I'd rather shy
away from that. Suffice it to say I'd
like to be playing football."
Wilkes said he didn't know too
much about a proposal to have All-
Star games in various areas.
"No details have been finalized on
that. Right now the best way to
describe that is speculative. The
Diecutive Committee of the Play
ers Association is working on that,"
Wilkes said.
Wilkes also said a report .that the
players might start their own
league was "quite speculative.
"But anything is possible. Every
body is in a state of chaos. Every
body's mind is in a state of disarray.
House' o
Grier said . . "Everything is so much
bigger and there are so many people.
It looks a tot different, but its good to
be back."
In the last year and a half, Grier
has been (traveling college campuses
around the country spreading the
word of God.
"I was 'born again' four and a half
years ago," Grier said. "After I re
tired from football and making all
those movies, I still felt an emptiness.
To fulfill that 'emptiness; Iturned to
God.'!
Grier retired from the NFL wars in
the late :1:960'5, after stints with the
New Yorl Giants and the Los Angeles
Rams, where he was part of one of the
greatest defensive lines in NFL histo
ry. Along with Grier, Merlin Olson,
Deacon Jones, and Lamar Lundy
comprised the infamous Fearsome
Foursome.
"Noboily can ever remember La
mar Lundy," Grier said, "but he
always got the job done."
for a long wait
Everyody 's mind is shooting across
the black board."
• He said he was sure something
would happen that ; would permit
NFL players to utilize their talent.
Wilkes said he always looks at
negotiations as "one side asking for
the sky, and the othei (offering) the
ground. You meet in a middle area.
And I assume that will eventually
happen. We'll reach a common
stand and negotiations will be com
pleted."
Wilke: said he had prepared him
self financially for the strike.
"But like 1,500 other players, I
don!t think we're prepared psycho
logically," kid said. "Financially, all
you have to do is save your money.
The mental letdown is the hard
thing, both for players, coaches and
fans.
"I hope we can come back with all
wounds mended," he said.
Wilkes wouldn't say how long he
could Last financially.
"I don't want to answer that, but
I've made good investments. I
haven't. been stupid and thrown
away my money. I'm not rich by
any standard, but I'll be all right."

Grier was heartbroken at being
traded from the Giants to the Rams.
"We were one big family in New
York, I loved the Giants," Grier said.
"When I was traded to Los Angeles, it
was totally different. There were
three different groups. The whites
were in one corner, the blacks in
another and there were the coaches."
Things got better in Los Angeles
with the emergence of the Fearsome
Foursome and four years later the
Rams played the Giants.
"We destroyed them 55-7," Grier ,
said. "They accused us of pouring it ,
on and you know what, we did. We
tore them up."
Grier seemed disturbed over the
present condition of the NFL, espe
cially the NFL player's strike.
"I think the strike is silly," Grier
said. "We don't need strikes. We need
to recognize what we're facing. The
players are making a good salary.

The women's soccer club, only two
games into its season, is readjusting
its playing style for its new coach,
Dan Palumbo. Palumbo recently re
placed Rich Lucas who had held the
'position briefly.
The decision• to replace Lucas, who
only coached the first game, was
made by the Lady Lions after Palum
bo agreed to attend one practice
session as a guest coach.
"We are a-club so the decision was
up to us," club president Elvira Fal
setta said. "Dan is really a good
coach and he's very qualified."
Palumbo was chosen to replace
Lucas . before Tuesday's - game
against Hartwick, in which the Lady
Lions were defeated 0-2.
The shots on the goal told the story.
The' Lady Lions were penetrating
well but couldn't complete a final
pass. The first half ended with the
score 0-0, but Hartwick came back to
score twice on two attempts.
The Lady Lions entered the game
without a few of their star players,

After retiring from football, Grier ..

countless television appearances, but
he said he still felt an emptiness after

In the last year and a half, Grier

in the last couple of years.
"I have had a lot of offers, but I

Palumbo emphasizes skill, speed

Expos hand Phillies 1 1-4 loss
MONTREAL (AP) Chris
Speier drove in a team-record eight
runs with a bases loaded triple, a
three-run homer and a single to
back the five-hit pitching of Bill
Gullickson as the Montreal Expos
defeated the Philadelphia Phillies
11-4 last night.
The eight RBI broke the Expos'
record of seven, shared by four
players, most recently Larry Par
rish in 1980.
Speier set the record with his
seventh homer of the season, giving
Montreal a 10-4 lead in the seventh.
The Expos had erupted for three
runs in the second against Philadel
phia starter Dick Ruthven, 11-11.
Gary Carter and Tim Wallach
opened the inning with singles and
Warren Cromartie walked to load
the bases with none out. Speier then
grounded a triple that rolled all the
way to the center field wall as all
three runners scored.
Montreal boosted its margin to 5-0
in the third after singles by Al
Oliver and Carter and Cromartie's
walk loaded the bases. Speier then
hit Ruthven's first pitch into center
field for a two-ruri single. •
Gary Matthews delivered an RBI
triple off Gullickson, 12-12, in the
fourth but Andre Dawson's sacrifice
fly restored the five-run margin in
the bottom of the inning.
Carter's 29th homer of the season
made it 7-1 in the fifth before Ivan
DeJesus tripled home two runs and
scored on an infield out by pinch
hitter Greg Gross, cutting the mar
gin to 7-4 in the seventh.
The loss dampened the National
League East pennant hopes of the
Phillies, who started the day 4 1 / 2
games behind the St. Louis Cardi
nal.

ST. LOUIS (AP) Tommy Herr
singled home Tito Landrum from
second base with one out in the
eighth inning to give the St. Louis
Cardinals a 2-1 victory over the

The victory, the Cards' ninth in 10
games, boosted St. Louis' lead to 5 1 / 2
games in the National League East
and cut its magic number to six.
