BOWERS Collegian Staff Writer The Blue Band played ,"Hail to the Lion," the Nittany Lion mascot danced, and the cheerleaders cried "We are Penn State," but it wasn't a football game. It was Penn State Day at the Kern graduate cafeteria. Diners spending their Friday lunch hour at the cafeteria were surrounded by "Love Ya Lions" placards on the walls, Blue Band members on stage and cheerleaders strolling about, talking and passing out buttons. The idea of bringing the excitement of a football game to the cafeteria came from its manager, Dave Gingher. "We want to get the entire student body involved in the atmosphere of a game," he said "We have never done anything like this before and we wanted to see how it would go over. We would like to get some new faces in here." Lee Giannone, cheerleading coach and adviser, said the squad was glad to get involved in the event. "We always try to do anything that will try to promote Penn State," he said. Although the event got off to a slow start, the music attracted spectators and the room eventually became crowded. Lion's Legion member Tammy Conrad said she thought the people who were eating when the cheering started may have expected a more peaceful meal. "They were really surprised," she said. Though only a few people cheered at the beginning, the enthusiasm grew. are are not yelling," Conrad said, "but I think they are enjoying it " Ellen Levy (11th-speech pathology) agreed that, the event was a surprise. "They don't expect (a pep rally) in Kern," she said. "I don't know if it is the right place. It may have more effect in a cafeteria where more undergrads are." But Levy did like all the noontime activity. "It's nice to hear other people playing music instead of talking loud," she said. Susan Seidler (graduate-master of business administra tion) also liked the different atmosphere: "I think that it is.nice because (the cheerleaders) are very enthusiastic." She added that the excitement may have gotten some of the diners ready for the game. I • American Cancer Societsi Banquets, Horticulture Show blooms on campus By ROB STEUTEVILLE Collegian Staff Writer The tent was full of people and the air was fragrant with the smell of herbs, flowers and evergreen trees at this weekend's Horticulture. Show. Numerous exhibits were displayed, including one featuring the inside of a home filled with plants, and others with beautifully terraced front yards and gardens of all sorts all under the tent. Outside the tent was a huge floral display. Acting as a hostess for the show was its co-manager, Bridget Behe (11th-horticulture and agriculture ed ucation). "The show is an educational tool for both the students who work on it and the public who enjoy it," Behe said. "The ideas we present here are de signed so that people can take them home and use them." Although the numerous gardens and displays looked complex, she said that with a little know-how, peo ple can use the ideas'in their homes. "A lot of people think it takes a lot of time," Behe said. "Granted, we are horticulture majors and we know the technical aspects, but I hope that people would look at something and say, 'Hey, how would I do that?' "If you can water a plant and read, there is no reason why you can't grow tomatoes in your back yard." After the show ends, work begins ahnost immediately for the next year's show, she said. Working on the show can be a great experience for people who are inter ested in horticulture, and those who do not have experience can easily get it by participating in the show. Behe said it is especially interest ing in the early stages when students can see their own ideas bloom and come to life. "Walking through these exhibits, you can't imagine what they look like on paper," she said. One interesting aspect of this year's festival, Behe said, was the sensory garden. The garden, de signed for people with visual hand icaps, enabled participants to sense many frangrant and textured herbs and flowers, and toidentify these plants by "reading" tags printed in Braille. "Each year we try to address the four areas of horticulture orna mental horticulture, floriculture, fruits and vegetables and add a new twist," Behe said. "The sensory exhibit was the new twist." Jim Beletti (13th-horticulture) echoed Behe's statement about trying to give people some ideas they can take home and use. "For instance," he said, pointing to a corner of the ornamental exhibit thatle co-chaired, "this is the corner of your yard. We ,try to teach people what they can do with their yards.
