Divers compete at NCAAs
.The opportunity to compete with the
btst in the country, and the experience
gained from the NCAA diving
championships is something that Penn
State's Dale Dmitrzak and Mike Ceca
tiello will not soon forget.
Dmitrzak placed 32nd in the one-meter
diving and 22nd in the three-meter, while
Cecatiello placed 26th in the one-meter
competition at NCAAs this weekend at
Marquette University's Walter Schroed
er Aquatic Center in Milwaukee.
"It was really exciting both to watch
and participate in," Dmitrzak said. "The
.competition was the best we've ever
seen."
Forty divers competed in each event,
and after the first five preliminary dives,
the top 24 moved to the semifinals.
Dmitrzak made the semifinals in the
Netmen split
The men's tennis team found out how
important its doubles matches are last
weekend.
The Lions split their weekend pair of
matches, defeating William and Mary
and losing to Old Dominion, both by the
score of 5-4.
Against Old Dominion, Penn State tra
iled 4-2 after the singles were finished.
The overall match came down to the
third doubles contest, where Penn State's
team of Bill Schillings and Rob Pinkham
lost in two sets 6-4, 7-6.
Penn State coach Holmes Cathrall said
the team could have easily won the Old
Dominion match.
"I can't believe we lost to them,"
Cathrall said. "We felt we could have
beat them.
With the doubles matches following the
six singles matches, Cathrall said this
makes the doubles very important in
dual contests.

three-meter
"I just missed the semifinals by plac
ing 26th (in the one-meter)," Cecatiello
said. "We dove well on the three-meter
but not the 'best we could."
Dmitrzak said the most important
thing about the meet was that now both
fie and Cecatiello have the NCAA experi
ence which is a major asset to their
diving careers.
Both divers agreed that they were
pleased with their diving and had a great
time at the meet. The NCAAs will always
be an exciting memory for Dmitrzak and
Cecatiello.
"Being there was great," Cecatiello
said. "It makes you feel a part of the
best, and you are."
Virginia pair
"The matches (this weekend) weren't
decided until the doubles," Cathrall said.
"You can see how important the doubles
are."
This year, maybe more than ever the
doubles teams are going to decide a lot of
matches for the Lions. Penn Stale is a
team without any superstars, which
Cathrall said will make the team rely on
the doubles team a lot more this season.
The Lions clirkched their win against
William and Mary, sealing - the victory
with their doubles.
Sealing the win for the Lions were the
doubles team of Jeff Factor and Jon
Whiteside. Factor and Whiteside defeat
ed their opponents 6-4, 6-4. Factor and
Whiteside also had some of the same
success against Old Dominion 7-5, 6-3.
In the singles for Penn State, Factor
and Bill Pilardi were the only two who
won both of their matches.

Jackson, Warner to run Lion track
By TIM BEIDEL
Collegian Sports Writer
Curt Warner and Kenny Jackson, who
will no doubt be key perfortners for the
1982 football team, have decided to par
ticipate in track this spring.
As a result, they will miss spring
football drills.
Warner, one of the leading rushers in
Penn State history, and Jackson, a stand
out wide receiver, have long been recog
nized as two of Penn State's fastest
players in years. Both will try to trans
late that speed into success on the track.
Harry Groves, , head track coach, is
guarded, but optimistic, about the two
men's chances for success, and thinks
both will help the program.
"People shouldn't go looking for mira
cles," Groves said. "(But) they're defi
nitely going to help track."
Groves pointed out the startling times
often associated with the players, such as
Warner's publicized 4.4 40-yard dash
time, can be misleading.
"Football times don't translate to any
thing," he said. "They (football players)
have all got the times, but when you put
them in the blocks and 'gun' start them,
the times all go up considerably."
Groves is most impressed with Jack
son's chances for immediate success.
"Kenny is a three-event state champ in
New Jersey, so he's got a good track
Flyers down Rangers, Pens clinch playoff berth
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Darryl Sittler scored two
goals and assisted on a third to lift the Philadelphia
Flyers to a 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers in a
NHL game last night.
With the win, the Flyers closed to within five points of
the Rangers, whom they will meet in the playoffs, in the
race for second place in the 'Patrick Division. The
second place finisher will receive the home-ice advan
tage in the best-of-five series.
Sittler's first goal came as he lifted the puck over

background," he said. "The guy's got
ability.
Warner, on the other hand, played
baseball in high school, and has had no
track background.
"Curt's coming from another direc
tion," Groves said. "We're going to take
our time with him."
Assistant football coach Fran Ganter
said the football staff approves of the
players' decision to run track.
"It's been a common practice with our
squad (to try other sports in the
spring)," Ganter said. "After their fresh
man year, and if he contributes to the
squid (of the other sport), it's fine."
Players in the past who have skipped
spring drills in faVor of participation in
another sport include Mike Guman, a
successful pitcher for the baseball team,
and a standout for the Lions' first No. 1-
ranked football team (1978), and Terry
Rakowsky, an outfielder for the baseball
team, and a member of both Penn State's
football teams that were at some point in
the season ranked No. 1 (1978 and 1981).
Sean Firrell, an All-American guard
last year, threw the discus for the track
team in 1980. Warner participated with
the baseball team at the beginning of last
season, but later returned to the football
squad's spring drills.
Ganter also believes the athlete's par
ticipation in track will have benefits for
the two that will carry over to the football
prone Rangers goaltender Ed Mio at 11:26 of the first
period
Sittler scored again on a short-lthnded goal when he
took a Brad Marsh pass and lofted a 30-footer into the
top right-hand corner of the net to put Philadelphia up 2-
0 at 14:48 of the second period.

Louisiana Tech sprints
past Cheyney for title
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) Louisiana
Tech switched from a low-post to a
high-post offense to get the ball to
Janice Lawrence and spark a dev
astating first-half run in the Lady
Techster's 76-62 victory over Cheyney
State for the NCAA's first women's
national championship yesterday.
Lawrence scored 12 points of her 20
points in the last ten minutes of the
first half, as Tech came from a 6-point
deficit with a 26-6 spree to take a 40-26
lead.
The Victory gave Lousiana Tech, 35-
1, its second national title. The Lady
Techsters were ALAW champions last
year. The loss dropped Cheyney State
to 28-3 and snapped a 23-game winning
streak.
• "We were getting more of a high
post set instead of a double low," said
Tech assistant coach Leon Barmore.
"We got the basketball inside. We did
a better job getting it in to Law
rence."
Tech's substitution of 6-2 Debra
Rodman for 6-0 Pam Kelly gave the
team the extra height it needed for the
Rutgers' AIAW champ
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Patty
Coyle scored 30 points, 18 in the sec
ond half, as Rutgers captured the
AIAW national basketball
championship yesterday with an 83-77
victory over Texas.
The loss ended Texas' 32-game win
ning streak.
Earlier, in the third-place game,
Nancy Berngardt scored 28 points and
led a second-half surge that carried
Villanova to a 90-81 victory over Way
land Baptist.

high post game, Barmore said.
In that first half spurt, Cheyney's
Lady Wolves missed 13 of their last 15
shots. Coach Vivian Stringer said the
poor shooting gave Tech command of
the game.
"We just had some shots that
weren't falling for us. We went
through a cold spree and Tech just got
ahead of us," Stringer said.
"We just weren't getting things to
drop for us. It's not that they were
taking shots I didn't want them to. It's
that they just weren't falling."
Two Cheyney starters Valerie
Walker and Debra Walker both got
into foul trouble early, as each picked
up three in the first half.
"Valerie and Debra Walker are our
keys, and they had to play tenta
tively," Stringer said. "In effect, the
fouls did dictate the way we had to
play. They dictated the defense and
offense."
Cheyney State was paced by Valerie
Walker with 20 points. Rosetta Guil
ford had 10 Yolanda Laney also had 10
and Debra Walker had 12.
Texas, behind 16 points by Annette
Smith, took a 37-34 halftime lead and
stretched their to 41-36 early in the
second period.
Rutgers, which finished 25-7, tied it
at 39-39 and 43-43, finally taking the
lead for the first time in the second
half at 50-49 on a field goal by Terry
Dorner.
The Lonhgorns regained the lead 57-
56, but Rutgers then went in front for
good on a three-point play by Mary
Coyle, Patty's twin sister.
