7f there is one adjective that could
describe the 1982 Film Follies, that
adjective would be "unique."
Seniors in the graphic arts department
combined their talents Saturday and in
two performances presented their
annual Film Follies in Walnut Building.
Each of the 29 presentations made a
unique and imaginative statement, borne
of and executed by its creator. Some
were humorous, some were thought
provoking and others were just plain
entertaining.
The presentations were developed
around four categories:
• Metamorphosis the change of one
abstract shape into another.
• Leader a film made of a
scratched, dyed, bleached, or otherwise
marked blank leader, accompanied by a
soundtrack.
• Slide show a passage of time in
slide form with appropriate soundtrack
o Film a statement about a '
particular political, social, psychological
or economic situation using an 8 or 16
millimeter camera.
The . Follies began with Mark Stoner's
"Lullaby of Broadway," a leader
showing a dancing centipede. From then
on, it was obvious the audience was in for
a real treat. One after another, segment
after segment, the Film Follies rolled on,
leaving the audience wondering, "What
will they think of next?"
Brian Gamerman's "IIWW" the
"Big One" run backwards made for an
amusing and thoughtful piece.
Everything from the women in the
factories taking apart weapons to miners
putting resources back into the ground
was included.
"Through the Looking Glass," showed
two mirrors in two rooms of mirrored
image and the people that pass through
the rooms and through the mirrors.
Betsy Valentine's "Train of Thought for
a One Track Mind" was a captivating
leader showing a train going through
several maneuvers.
In "The Blues, the Blacks, and the
Whites" by Jill McClary, black and white
photographs of black and white people
were set to a blues soundtrack.
"Mummy's Little Girl," a film by Joanne
Hulse, scanned a beauty pageant winner
from head to toe and back up again. The
second time, however, she was wrapped
in cellophane.
In "DUMB" Gamerman took the
musical introduction to "2001: A Space
Odessey," had non-musicians play it on
trumpets, and added the resulting
dreadful soundtrack to several
appearances and disappearances of the
word "dumb" on the screen.
Sandy Kitchen's "Nice To Meat You"'
began with people walking towards the
camera at a very slow pace while the
camera told them to have a nice day. As
the pace of the people approaching the
camera quickened, so did the camera's
words.
These were just a few of the many
excellent presentations viewed at the
Follies. And though the show's creators,
their fingers masquerading as elephant
trunks in their elephant shaped
invitations, were scared away at the end
by a little white mouse, the Film Follies
didn't scare anyone away.
In a very relaxed atmosphere, those 18
talented graphic arts students
transformed a simple movie screen into
75 minutes of the most unique and
entertaining kind of art imaginable.
