22—The Daily Collegian Friday, Dec. 11, 1981 Ebert's talent hidden behind top Lion divers By GREG LODER • Daily Collegian Sports Writer When the men's diving team is mentioned, the names Dale Dmitr zak and Mike Cecatiello are sure to he the topic of conversation. And why not, the duo defeated some of the most prestigous divers in the East to win the diving compe tition at the Penn State Relay Carni val last weekend. But many do not realize the men's diving team has a third member freshman Jim Ebert. Diving coach Bob Goldberg believes that Ebert soon may have just as much poten tial as Dmitrzak and Cecatiello. "He has come a long way this fall," Goldberg said. "He has quite a bit of potential and his dives show constant improvement. "In the begining he had to spend some time learning the dives. He will just have to gain some experi ence." Ebert said that sometimes he does feel overshadowed by the talented Cecatiello and Dmitrzak, but that the two have been a big help. "Sometimes it bothers me,': Ebert said about being overshadowed. "They are super divers and I look up to them. They often tell me that they were in the same position as I am last year." Goldberg said that the situation is understandable for the freshmen. "It's a normal feeling, but it should work its way out," the coach said. "Jim doesn't have the experi ence of Mike and Dale. They felt the same way at one time." r 1110•111111111111111111 Ebert has adjusted well to the new competition. He finished third in the one-meter dive against Villanova on Wednesday and was even in first place after the required dives were completed. Ebert and "the other two divers" will be home this weekend as Penn State faces St. Bonaventure at 2 tommorrow afternoon. Although the Lions are coming off a defeat suffered Wednesday night at Villanova (71-42), men's swim ming coach Lou Mac Neill insists that the meet was one of the best he has seen all year. "I am very happy about the meet," Mac Neill said. "Right down the line we had good swims. We don't care about the points." Mac Neill in his seventeen yearsat Penn State has always kept this philosophy that winning dual meets are not important. What is important in MacNeilPs mind is that his swimmers record the best times that they can, every time they go out. "What we are looking for is the best times in Easterns," he said. "We pay no attention to the other team in the dual meets. Winning or losing has nothing to do with our program." As for tommorrow's meet, Mac - eill does not see Penn State as hav ing much of a chance to win. "St. Bonaventure will do every thing they can to beat us. They are trying to become a force in Eastern swimming. Their program has high er priorities than ours does." • is never frozen or pre-formed, but prepared fresh by highly skilled pizza professionals. Though it's only a preseason meet and will not count in the final standing, the Farmingdale Invitational (today and to morrow in Long Island, N.Y.) will give the Lions another chance to prove them selves. Last week, the Lions finished sixth at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago against just about the best dozen teams in the country. It was Penn State's first tournament, unlike the other teams which already had three meets under their belts. But things should be different this weekend. "It's no where near the level (of com petition) of last weeekend," Penn State coach Karl Schwenzfeier said. "But last week was really wild. Every top team in the country except UCLA and Arizona State were there. Garret looks for Wharton to lead at invite By MICHAEL FELICI Daily Collegian Sports Writer Nittany Lion fencing coach Mac Garret has• a pool cleaner, an older sister and last year's team captain, Don Lear, to thank-for one of his top sabre fencers, Paul Wharton. Wharton and his tbarnates travel this , weekepd to Lafayette for a four-way meet against the Leopards, Rutgers and Pace. But back to the pool cleaner . . "Our high school fencing coach worked on our pool the summer before I entered high school and since I was looking for a winter sport he suggested fencing," Wharton said, "Since I couldn't hit the outside shot in basketball and didn't want to wrestle, I gave fencing a try." Wharton played soccer in the fall and was a sprint runner for the track team in the spring. , UNIVERSITY CALENDAR SPECIAL EVENTS Friday-Sunday, December 11.13 Friday, December 11 Sports: P.S. It's never been a roll-over-and-die situation, but we hope to win. We always want to win." The competition this weekend will give the Lions a breather --- but not a big one. Although it is not defending NCAA cham pion Nebraska, Southern Connecticut has been ranked as high as third and Temple has acquired many recruits that make it a much improved team. And Farming dale has consistentlybeen ranked first or second among the junioi colleges. Schwenzfeier said it will be *a little easier for, the individuals, too. That seems like quite an understatement when you consider that Lion captain Randy Jepson beat two-time NCAA champion Jim Haitung, from N6braska, on still rings last week. "Hopefully, we'll be able , to see that occur again," Schwenzfeier said. "Bill Stanley should do well on the pommel horse, too." Junior Kenn Viscardi will not be com= peting due to knee injury suffered during "My older sister and her boyfriend were both fencers and Don was the captain of my high school team," said the sophomore from Wyckoff, N.J. "So I had a lot of contacts." Wharton was ready to give up on fencing that fresh man year to perform in the school's musical, but encouragement from his coach and Lear in addition to a first-place finish in .a New Jersey fencing competition for freshmen kept him on the team. "That victory was a real ego booster," Wharton said. "I couldn't believe I could be that good." .Garret said that Wharton has been coming along exceptionally well this year. His 12-6 record, which includes the Penn State and Temple Opens, places him third in victory percergage behind Joe Hayes and Bruce Capin. Wharton's career meet record of 27-3 (90 per- Egi a dismount in his floor exercise at last week's finals. "We expected that," Schwenzfeier said. "It's coming along fine but we want to give it plenty of time to heal. "Gregg Simon's going to have to stay away from the leg events, like the vault and the floor exercise, because he sprained his knee, too. We want to be very, very careful about it." Simon was vaulting before the Thanks giving break and jammed his knee dnd couldn't compete last weekend. Farmingdale was the Lions' first out ing last year and they scored 254 points 10 points less than they did this year without the services of Simon. But sometimes it's best to work your way up and use meets like Farmingdale to get your feet wet. At least, that's what the Lion coach wants his freshmen to do. "Steve Friedman was the New Jersey state champ last year and this will be the first time he's competing with us," Schwenzfeier said." "He's also very aggressive. Put all these factors togeth er and Paul becomes a dangerous competitog." Garret doesn't expect any problems from Lafayette or Pace, but feels Rutgers could give his fencers a hard time. The Scarlet Knights placed 30th out of 53 schools at the National Collegiate Athletic Association championships last year. "We should be able to takiLafayette and Pace in the similar fashion we did Duke and George Mason," Garret said. "Rutgers is going to be another problem. Junior transfer, Tom Ladrnan, fell off the horse in Chicago and still received a 9.0. Schwenzfeier said he is looking for ward to seeing his entire routine in com petition. Likewise, he said that when Tim Dar ling, a transfer from the University of Oregon, hits his routine, he'll be excel lent. , Even with all this fresh talent, Schwenzfeier doesn't expect to unseat Nebraska as NCAA champs just yet.
