Annual festival heralds season

Bright, traditional costumes, delectable international treats,
unique arts and crafts, exhibits and films will be some of the
major attractions of an International Fair held from noon until
6 p.m. Sunday in the HUB Ballroom as part of the eighth annual
International Holiday Festival.
The opening ceremony for this "Inter-Cultural Celebration"
will be held at 12:30 this afternoon in the Kern Graduate
Building lobby. The public is invited to all activities that are
part of this 10-day long holiday event.
The festival chairmanship, which is alternated yearly be
tween James F. Lynch Jr., assistant director for International
Student Affairs, and John A. McCauley, assistant director of
student activities, will be handled this year by McCauley:
"The University community will come out, and we never
have doubts about the international community coming out,"
McCauley said. "We think our promotion has been better, and
we hope we'll draw significant numbers of Americans.
"Where else can you go to get food from 15 different
countries?" McCauley said.
McCauley said the committee charged with organizing the
festival has been working since early Fall Term. The festival
began eight years ago in an attempt to consolidate the diverse
international activities that occurred at different times
throughout the year and were much more low key, McCauley
said.
"We had a number of smaller events in previous years. A lot
of international clubs would have a dinner once a year and show
films," Lynch said. "We saw that there was definitely a market
for a larger event."
The International Fair, in its fourth year, is the major
attraction of the Festival, Lynch said.
The attendance at the Fair has increased every year, rising
from between 800 and 900 in 1978 to about 1,500 people last year,
Lynch said. The fair is popular with students as well as town

and the Nittany Valley Symphony at'3 p.m. in Schwab Auditori

Exhibitions including "Art of the Contemporary American
Indian" in the HUB Gallery and the "International Artifacts
Sale" in the Kern Lobby will be displayed through Dec. 18, and
a laser photography and Art Print Sale will be held next week in
the HUB Gallery
Monday and Tuesday will include noontime concerts of
international music in the Kern Lobby. Also on Monday, a
symposium on "International Development: Are Women Los
ing Out?" will be held from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. in 101 Kern.
A plant sale starting at 10 a.m., and a craft demonstration at
7 p.m., will take place Wednesday in the Kern Lobby, and
Thursday's activities will include a Holiday Luncheon starting
at 11 a.m. in Kern Cafeteria.
Next Friday, a "Snowflake Buffet" will be held at 6:30 p.m. in
101 Kern. Next Saturday, a children's Christmas party will
start at noon in Walnut Building and an International coffee
house will be held at 8 next Saturday night in 102 Kern.
The public is invited to meet at 8 p.m. on Dec. 13 in
Eisenhower Auditorium to join in Christmas caroling around
campus, the concluding event of the the International Holiday
Festival.
The organizations coordinating events in the International
Festival are the Graduate Student Association, Hetzel Union
Board, International Council, Kern Graduate Commons, Office
of International Student Affairs, Office of Religious Affairs,
Office of Student Activities, Paul Robeson Cultural Center, and
