James J. Mapes, billed as Cam
pus Entertainer of the Year in 1978,
takes the University comniunity on
• "A Journey into the Imagination
through Hypnosis" at 8:30 tomor
row evening in Eisenhower Audito
rium. The program is sponsored by
Students for the Performing Arts
and the 1981 Homecoming Commit
tee.
Mapes, an actor and. producer
who has to his credit numerous
stage, television and film appear
ances, first studied hypnosis in
Europe in 1970. He then developed a
stage hypnosis show that through
the years has evolved into his pro
gram "PSI."
"PSI," a name derived from a
word referring to unexplained or
paranormal phenomena, is a
theatre piece in which the members
of the audience become stars of the
show. Mapes uses 40-50 hypnotized
subjects, both on stage and in the
audience, and takes them through,
outer space via their imaginations.
"Besides providing entertain
ment," says Mapes, "I want the
show to destroy the myths that
surround hypnosis."

"Tender Togetherness," by Stanley Turrentine,
Elektra; SE-534.
Stanley "Mr. T" Turrentine is a tenor sax player.
Not an especially noteworthy one, if one judges
solely by this album. Good, yes. Expressive, com
manding, but trapped within a groove of smoothie
funk instead of real bad ass jazz. A disappointment,
for it seems that the big T would fare well in the
realm of heavier jazz.
It's nice, nice, very nice, but it just makes me
want to put on a Crusaders album and hear Wilton
Felder do the same thing, only so much better.
Perhaps it's the haunting suspicion of a basic pop
schmalz sss-orientation that spoils this album. Too
much sugar too many instruments, vocalists and
engineers had their hands on this one, and poor Mr.
T gets lost in the manipulation. Give him just a bass
player and a drummer, then see what happens.

"Music without feeling is nothing!"• says Lee
Oskar, harmonica player for War. Music without
interest ain't that great either. How far can the
musical imagination reach with simplistic melodies
on the blues harp swimming on an ocean of swelling
string arrangements?
Classifying this music is a difficult (and probably
pointless) task. Not quite jazz, not quite Muzak, not
