12—The Daily Collegian Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1981 Pitt toquit Eastern 8 after 'Bl-82 season PITTSBURGH (AP) The University of Pittsburgh has decided to withdraw from the Eastern Eight basketball con ference at the end of the 1981-82 season. "The Eastern Eight is not a viable option," said Jack Freeman, Pitt vice chancellor. Pitt is apparently considering an alli ance with the Big East, another basket ball league, or the proposed all-sports . Eastern League still on the drawing board. The Eastern Eight has failed to secure a lucrative television package, while the Big East league recently negotiated a $1.6 million regional TV deal. "It's strictly a matter of economics," said Pitt basketball coach Roy Chipman. "If the Eastern Eight were solid finan cially, we'd stay. Obviously, it isn't." "Hey, we could go 16-0 and not go to the Super Bowl," he told reporters after reviewing Monday night's tri umph over Atlanta, the Eagle's per ennial nemisis. "You still have to go to the playoffs and win. There's no guarantees in any of those kind of things. "Our big concern right now is doing the job we have to each Sun day. We've got a lot of good football teams to play yet. "We're striving to be the No. 1 team in the country. If you're the only undefeated team you're No. 1 right now and we got to play good enough to stay there." Ahead next Sunday for the 5-0 Eagles is New Orleans, at the bot- torn of the NFL's National Confer ence Western Division with a 1-4 mark.. Vermeil said he isn't taking the Saints lightly. "I don't look at any football game to be easy," he said. "Every year we've been beaten by a team that isn't winning. And we just can't allow that to, happen. "We can't expect them (the Saints) to lie down and play dead for us. If we do we'll get beat. They've already beat e n •the Los Angeles Rams." Vermeil scoffed at the scuttlebutt that a team that 'wins on Monday night has a letdown the next Sunday. "There's absolutely no reason we can't go down there and play real well," he said. Vermeil had high praise for his quarterback, Ron Jaworski, who is "better this year," and for place kicker Tony Franklin who kicked three field goals. ek TODAY'— TOMORROW J— TODAY TOMORROW TODAY TOMORROW TODAY TOMORROW TODAY TOMORROW : I I -I 0 . Expos' Rogers says key to Phillies is Schmidt MONTREAL (AP) Montreal right hander Steve Rogers, the Expos' starting pitcher in the National League East mini-series opener against Philadelphia at 1:05 p.m. today, says the key to the Phillies is Mike Schmidt, "but if you exclude the others, you're in trouble." Rogers, 12-8, will face Phillies left hander Steve Carlton, 13-4, in the opener of the best-of-five game series matching the first-half champion Phillies against the second-half winner, Montreal: "I'm not thinking about the Phillies or about us just about individuals," Rog ers said. ' • "Right now, every individual has to narrow down on what he has to do," said Rogers, who clinched the second-season title for the Expos with a 3-0, two-hit victory over the New York Mets last Saturday. "Ii everybody does that, then we'll win." Carlton remained characteristically silent before the playoffs, but teammate Pete Rose spoke for him. "We'll have our ace Carlton ready to go twice, if necessary. How many are as good as Carlton? None," Rose said. WALNUT BUILDING Both teams enter the series relativOtlO healthy. Reliever Tug McGraw of the Phillies said he had recovered from a sore elbow that sidelined him from Sept. 4-24, and right-hander Larry Christenson could return to the rotation after a spell in the bullpen.
