WDFM is back

After being plagued by equipment problems,
WDFM is on the air again.
Though the station's equipment is now sound,
it faces another continuing problem a violation
of an Federal Communications Commission regu
lation requiring all radio stations to have a first
class chief engineer on contract.
WDFM's chief engineer Mark Hilliard, who
will be graduating and leaving the station, is
classified (by a test administered by the FCC) as
a second class engineer.
Robert Brubaker, head of the department of
speech communications, said that while no first
class chief engineer has been officially on the
staff, a registered first-class electrical engineer
from the community, Carl Volz Jr., has volun
teered his time to the station in the past.
Hilliard said, "It's not real clear who the chief
engineer is."
However, Volz is leaving the station. His

Loraine Goodenough, assistant general man
ager at WDFM, said the station has asked Asso
ciated Student Activities for a stipend to cover the
minimum wage salary of an engineer hired for
the summer through the University's work study
program.
Mark Giesen, station manager, said, "As it
stands, this is not a paid position."
In addition, Hilliard and Giesen have each sent
separate letters to various University administra
tors, including Raymond 0. Murphy, vice presi
dent of Student Affairs, notifying them of the chief
engineer situation.
While Hilliard's letter requested funds for a
chief engineer's salary, Giesen said his letter only
notified the administrators of the problem.
Geisen said because the station has two more
weeks before Hilliard is scheduled to leave,
"We're not panicked yet."
As of yesterday, Hilliard said he had received
no response from any the administrators.
