Daily Collegian Staff Writer
As students walk through the ground
floor of the HUB, they can hear the
sounds of construction. Hammering, dril
ling and sawing noises come from behind
a wooden partition.
Behind that partition, workmen are
constructing a skeleton of a greenhouse,
wooden seats and a red, white and blue
counter.
When the partition comes down in
August, four new food service areas will
be revealed. If work continues as sched
uled, Fast Break, Food for Thought, The
Greenhouse and The Founders Room will
replace the former Lion's Den and the
present food service in the Ballroom.
"Things are going really well," said
one of the construction supervisors who
asked not to be identified. "Unless we
have a material problem, which I can't
foresee, we should be done by the begin
ning of Fall Term 1981."
The $2.87 million renovation will alter
the Terrace Room, Penn State Bookstore
and HUB.
The renovation was conceived to re
solve three problems that the University
faced in the past few years, said Richard
Allan, assistant director of Food Serv
ices.
One problem was that the Terrace
Room has been an unsuccessful and
costly operation for Housing and Food
Services, Allan said. The cafeteria has
not been successful because of limited
parking and low visibility, he added.
At the same time; the HUB Lion's Den
was 25 years old and needed to be reno
vated, Allan said. Also, the Penn State
Bookstore was successful but inefficient
because it was scattered in three loca
tions, he said.
The combination of these three prob
lems resulted in the decision to eliminate
the Terrace Room and move the
bookstore into that building, he said. The
Terrace Room's services ultimately will
be replaced by six new food service areas
on the HUB ground floor.
Phase one of the construction involves
building the four food service areas in the
HUB by the end of the summer, Allan
said.
Terrace Room:
replaced with meals
By CINDY COX
Daily Collegian Staff Writer
Though it is next to one of the most used buildings on campus, 5.2 percent
of undergraduates surveyed said they did not know the building existed.
This building is also located next to a major athletic facility and close to a
large dormitory complex. Inside, customers can buy a cafeteria-style lunch.
Fortunately this building is in the section of campus where most people'
Aare.located before lunch. However„ 43 percent of undergraduates.surveyediE,aidk
they had never eaten there
This building is the Terrace Room Cafeteria, soon to be eliminated
because of high costs and insufficient business.
According to a survey conducted in 1978-79, the Terrace Room is mostly
frequented by faculty members, graduate students and professionals on campus.
"This cafeteria has never achieved the level of patronage that was
necessary to pay all the inherent costs," said Richard Allan, assistant director of
food services. "We have established a concept of break-even or self-supporting
operations. If one part of our system isn't carrying its load, we have to make some
changes."
Allan said the present HUB and Terrace Room renovations are not a direct'
result of problems with the Terrace Room. Other factors, such as the need for a:
larger facility for the bookstores and the need to renovate the Lion's Den have:
played a part in the decision to eliminate the Terrace Room.
When the cafeteria was constructed in 1972, large cafeterias were popular
all over the country, said John Miller, director of planning and development in the
Office of Physical Plant. However, he said people are not as interested in this type
of facility today.
"It began losing its popularity after it was built," Miller said. "People
tend to shy away from larger cafeterias today."
The original decision to build the Terrace Room was influenced by its
success when located on the ground floor of the HUB, Allan said.
"The feeling was that we could assume, on the basis of the past 20 years,
that the Terrace Room had been successful," Allan said. "We thought that would
be a justification for a public service cafeteria."

Some existing equipment will be use'
for the renovations, said John Millel,
director of planning and development 1,
the Office of Physical Plant. The wort'
out HUB kitchen facilities will be I.q
dated with a great deal of equipmer,
from the Teriace Room, he said.
During the second phase of construe
tion, all three bookstores will be move .
c
into the Terrace Room by late spring
next year.
John Bischoff, director of bookstore
said, "This move will be very good fo
the bookstores. We will expand in al p
areas and have more reference book
and general reading books."
Work should begin this August witl
demolition of unnecessary structures lef
in the Terrace Room, Bischoff said. Tit
new bookstore will remain open longer!
until 8:30 p.m. from Monday to Thurso
day, he added.
The final step of construction will in
volve constructing a bake shop to be,
called Dough To Go and a pizza/sub shot
to be called The Cellar. The post office
will also be moved from the ground flooi
HUB to McAllister Building at this time'
This phase of the project should be com
pleted by the summer of 1983.
On the ground floor of HUB, the office
of the Organization of Town Independen ,
Students, the Association of Residence
Hall Students, and Black Caucus tents:
tively will be moved upstairs into th(
bookstore by the HUB main desk. After
the offices are moved, pinball machinel
will, be put in that area. •
Responding to a 1978-79 marketing
survey, the new food service areas
offer a variety of menus, Allan said. The
survey revealed that a pizza/sub shop Is
most attractive to undergraduates, fol•i
lowed by a cafeteria, deli, store and grill.:
Fast Break will, offer hamburgers,
cheeseburgers and fast food. The Greeni
house will offer a soup and salad bar with
fruit and yogurt desserts.
At The Founders Room, waitress serv
ice and hot and cold entrees will be
offered. The Cellar will offer deli sand
wiches, pizza, subs and chili. Patrons at
Dough To Go can buy doughnuts, cooki6
