Artists Series Booters despite The soccer team failed again in its quest for the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship. But the quarterfinal loss to Indiana Sunday must be placed in its proper perspective. Sure, the reward would have been a trip this weekend to sunny Florida, with its palm trees and oranges, for a second consecutive berth in the NCAA. Final Four. • : 54 , 216, ''-, Rich Scarcella •• „:, „;.• But losing to the Hoosiers didn't turn the Nittany Lions' 1980 season sour. The season was already sweetened by a 3-2 victory over previously unbeaten Philadelphia Textile in the NCAA Mid- Atlantic Region final. "The loss there would have changed the success of the season somewhat," Penn State coach Walter Bahr said. sure it would have put the season in a different light." The Lions shined on their own, though, by perhaps even surpassing the 1979 NCAA third-place team in overall ability and talent and by recording an 18-3-1 mark, But that shouldn't be surprising since the Lions had nine returning lettermen. "We did a little bit better this season Horror Film Series (6 Films) should be proud no Final Four bid than we did last year," Bahr said. "This year would disprove , any possi ble thought that we were a little lucky last year." Led by All-American Jim Stamatis, the Lions shocked top-ranked Indiana last year in the quarterfinals, 2-0, at Jef frey Field, and flew south where they got their wings clipped by Southern Illinois- Edwardsville in the semis. Many skeptics thought Penn State's season was a fluke, like a rookie throw ing a no-hitter in baseball. This time, however, the sophomore jinx whammied only Lion opponents. The goal-scoring void left by Stamatis was a gap. Penn State found difficult to narrow early in the season. And after falling 2-0 to the Hoosiers in the third game of the season, the gap could have been as wide as the Grand Canyon. "We never overwhelmed anybody of fensively," Bahr said, "but 'we controll ed the large section of each game. We got goals, but from a lot of different peo ple. That's because of the way we play. We got goals from midfield." Paced by junior midfielder Duncan Mac Ewan, who led Penn State in scoring (10 goals, 13 assists), the Lions rebound ed from that loss, a loss Bahr blamed on the Astroturf surface at Indiana, to win 14 of their next 15 contests. Penn State legitimized its NCAA tour nament berth even , further by tying third-ranked Connecticut, 0-0, on the road and defeating Textile •in the regional final. That set up another con frontation with the Hoosiers. The match was tied at halftime, 1-1, but the Lions' hopes for some Florida sun and fun were drowned out by two second-half Indiana goals. "If they beat us twice, I guess they're a better team than us," Bahr said. "I couldn't put my finger on the problem other' than that Indiana was more ag gressive. I'd rather give Indiana credit for beating us rather than trying to find a reason for us losing the game." A coach usually remembers teams by recalling their characteristics. The dif ference betwen the 1980 Penn State team and • Bahr's other clubs is one trait atypical of the athletic stereotype. "The team is made up of a lot of bright academic students," Bahr said, "and there's a relationship to the way they played. They didn't make many mistakes. They were very methodical. "It was one of the few teams with enough talent and enough intelligence to play the type of soccer I prefer to coach.". It was also a team with enough con sistency and enough teamwork to reach the Final Four, unlike the 1979 club which was dominated by Stamatis. "The difference was balance," junior defender Dan Canter said. "We had 11 good players out there. We passed the ball better. I think we had a better team than last year and will be even better next year. "Call it a good season that came one game short." No, just call it a good season. By The Associated Press • Dave Roberts became the highest paid utility baseball player ever yesterday when he agreed to a five-year deal worth an estimated $1.3 million with the Houston Astros. Meanwhile in New York, San Diego Padre outfielder Dave Winfield is still being courted by both the Yankees and Mets, as well as two other clubs. Roberts, a catcher-infielder with a .240 career batting average, struck it rich in the free agent marketplace. Last season, he earned $65,000 with the Texas Rangers. His new contract with the Astros will bring him about four times that much in each of the next five years. The Astros announced the contract as a $l.l million deal but it was learned from sources at the meetings that incen tive clauses could add the remaining $200,000 to the package. ************* S K Sugarbush,Vt * -Jr• * * Reservations being taken for * * March 1 - 6. On the contrary, apparently it could tip the scales in favor of the Yankees at the expense of the New York Mets and two other clubs bidding for the free agent's services. "I am enthralled with George Stein brenner," said Al Frohman, Winfield's agent. "George is a winner. I like the way he operates." Winfield, who feels his talents were never appreciated in his seven years with the San Diego Padres, agreed. "I like the Yankees' tradition of winn ing," he said.
