Increased participation helps improve Greek Week

An, increase in participation and several
changes in structure made this year's Greek
[ Meek much more successful than previous
ypars, Greek Week chairman Craig Neal said.
Participation this year increased by 75 percent
over last year, he said. This was partly because
of a number of changes were made this spring in
an attempt to encourage more fraternities and
sororities to enter.
This year's committee decided to change the
nameiof the event from Spring Week to Greek
W , kk, so the event could be more closely iden
tified with the Interfraternity and the
Panhellenic councils, the two greek

The committee also made changes in the types
of events included in the week's schedule of
activities. It eliminated the carnival, window
and booth competitions and replaced them with
new events. Trophies were awarded for each
individual competition rather one award for the
overall winner, and all the events were held in
the Fraternity Row area, a location more con
venient for participating greeks.
Neal said the changes made this year con

The week's acitivities began with a chariot
race on East Fairmont Avenue between Hetzel
and Garner Streets. Sororities and fraternities
paired up to build and race elaborate chariots
ranging from a traditional greek chariot to a
rolling cheese. Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and
Alpha. Sigma Alpha sorority crossed the finish
line first, followed by Acacia fraternity and
Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, with Sigma Nu
fraternity and Alpha Gamma Delta sorority
finishing third.
A scavenger hunt kicked off Friday night's
activities. Individual sororities and fraternities
entered teams in the event. The teams began at a

Random pairing of fraternities and sororities
was experimented with this year for an Olympic
games competition Saturday afternoon. Neal
said the random pairing proved to be very
successful because it gave fraternities and
sororities an opportunity to work with different
groups.

ternoon, with the top three skits repeated
Saturday night for the awarding of the trophies.
The skits, which were a combination of
humorous dialogue, dancing and singing, were
performed on a stage set up on the Alpha Chi Rho
fraternity lot.
Alpha Phi sorority and Delta Tau Delta
fraternity won the competition with an adap
tation of "Once Upon a Mattress" called
"Fairytale High." Acacia and Kappa Alpha
Theta took second and Sigma Nu and Alpha
Gamma Delta took third.
"I felt that everything went smoothly this
year," Neal said, "particularly the events on
Saturday."
