B—The Daily Collegian Monday, March 24, 1980 Buckeyes top spikers • in t h n r By RICH SCARCELLA Daily Collegian Sports Writqr Some people were probably skeptical when men's volleyball coach Tom Tait said before the season that his squad had a crowd-exciting nature. The sixth-ranked Lk)ns did everything to try and back up Tait's claim Saturday night when it lost to 10th-ranked Ohio State, 10-15, 15-9, 10-15 and 15-17 before an enthusiastic capacity crowd in Rec Hall's South gym. "That was absolutely top-caliber volleyball," Tait said. "Whoever missed it missed a whale of a match. Both teams played excellent ball. We're so evenly matched." Buckeye coach Bob Yoder said that this match, the third meeting between the schools this year, was the most important thus far for his team. "This was really our first big meeting with them," Yoder said. "The other two times we played were in tournaments. 'l'hey were only two-out-of-three mat ches." Penn State defeated Ohio State in the finals of the Nittany Lion Invitational in January, and the , Buckeyes won the second 'meeting in the semifinals of the Pitt Invitational last month. "It was a good win for us," he added, i 'lt was our first big victory of the season." The Buckeyes' game plan was to at tack the Lions from the outside, Yoder CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING INFORMATION Ads can be placed in person at our office, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or mailed to Room 126 Catnegle Building (make checks payable to: The Daily Collegian). "but we knew they had a couple weak spots and attacked them. We also looked to go outside more, which gave us a big ad vantage." Ohio State stayed with that game plan in the first contest and won. The outcome was decided, however, when Penn State committed serving errors at crucial points as the Buckeyes moved from an 8- 6 deficit to a 15-10 win. The Lions improved their ballhandling in the second game, making only one error. Chuck Kegerreis had four kills in the game, mainly off the Jap or quick set, as Penn State showed some variety in its attack. , "It's the style of offense that's been our trademark over the past few years," Tait said. "It's the style we have to ride into the Eastern championship. "We misfired occasionally," he said, "but our setters ran our offense boldly. We have to do that in the future." The Lions played intelligent ball in the third game, and were ahead late in the ‘match, 9-7. Ohio State's blocking became more effective, though, in the rest of the game, and went up 2-1 in the match as the Buckeyes' Craig Forster and David Sears blocked down on a Dave Mull spike. The Lady Lions hope to close the regular season on a winning note at 7 in White Building before the ultimate test at nationals to be held this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Barnard is not expected to give the Lady Lions any troublebut Penn State coach Beth Aiphin knows that Bar nard is the type of team that can spoil a season of hard work. The Lady Lions are hoping to add one more victim to their already impressive season record of 15 wins and one loss. The only loss came early in the season against Temple, the state champion. Barnard's Tracy Burton, one of the most highly recruited fencers in the country, may be the only obstacle on the Lady Lions' strip. Barnard does not have much depth due to the fact that in the fall two players transferred and one is no longer with the team. Barnard coach Seymon Brover will lead his young team into action hoping to spoil the Lady Lions' night. "I think they'll give us'a good fight." A puzzling question for Alphin all season has been who would fence in the No. 4 position at nationals. She came to a conclusion by announcing tonight's lineup as the starting four for nationals. Senior All-American Judy Smith will fence in the No. 1 slot, while junior Cathy McClellan will fence in the No. 2 slot. Finishing out the lineup will be captain Nancy Anderson fencing No. 3 and Phyllis Wert in the puzzling No. 4 position. Still, Wert cannot help but think ahead to nationals. It is nicer having competition closer to nationals, she said. "I feel pretty good about my fen cing; I'm satisfied," Wert said. "When it comes to getting psyched, no one can get more psyched than me. I have to get my act down as far as skill level goes." Wert sees the match with Barnard as a building block to go into nationals fully prepared to fabe a high caliber of fencing. "Everyone's ready for nationals," Wert said. "It's time to go out and do it." Binney places 23rd The women's swimming and diving team concluded its four-day trip to nationals in Las Vegas, Nev., over the weekend. 187 222 237 294 257 Senior Becky Binney wound up 23rd out of 40 in the finals of the 3-meter diving on Saturday, even though she was 13th going into the semifinals. "She was under a tough situation," Penn State diving coach Bob Goldberg said,"but so was everyone else." Goldberg said the swimming and diving was in the same area of the pool so practice time was very limited. Binney's practice time was 6 Saturday morning and her event did not start until 3 p.m. 226 255 276 275 262 During practice, Binney had problems with her reverse-half-gainer, the div'e which eventually fouled her up in the finals. Sophomore Sandy Bizal swam her personal best time in the 50-yard freestyle event with a 24.51, to place her 33rd out of 68 entrants in what Penn State coach Ellen Perry said was the most heavily entered event. Bizal also swam in the 50-yard but terfly event on Wednesday and placed 11th. "She had an outstanding cham pionship," Perry said. Netmen win, lose by 5-4 score By CAROL BROWN Daily Collegian Sports Writer The men's tennis team played two very long and grueling matches over the weekend, losing to Columbia 5-4 on Friday but defeating Brown 5-4 on Saturday. The Columbia match lasted six hours and was played in less than ideal conditions, to say the least. Columbia's four clay courts, said Penn State coach Holmes Cathrall, are enclosed by a large plastic bubble with little room behind the baselines or sidelines and has lights on the sides of the courts rather than on the ceiling. "They were constantly running into lights, nets and the sides," Cathrall said, "but the kids were super. They adjusted, but some of these things had to upset them because we didn't win." No. 1 singles Tim McAvoy lost to Columbia's Dave Cooper 6- 1, 1-6, 6-2. Lion Don Lowry also dropped his match 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot against Columbia's Jeff Pappell. Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles for Penn State were all winners, battling out each match to three sets. Lion Bill Schillings won 2-6, 6-2, 6-4; N 0.4 Tom Beckhard won 4-6, 6-3, 6-3; and Bill Schmucker had a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory. The only successful doubles team for Penn State was Beckhard and Schmucker in the No. 3 spot. They defeated Rams trade 'Cappy' to Chargers SAN DIEGO (AP) Running back John Cappelletti has been traded from the Los Angeles Rams to the San Diego Chargers in exchange for an undisclosed future draft choice. Cappelletti, 27, played for the Rams for five years before missing the 1979 National Football League season because of a severely' pulled groin muscle he suffered during the preceding campaign. Cappelletti, who won the Heisman Trophy at Penn State in 1973, gained by Carot Brown The only thing we is your intelligence. He suffered his injury late in the 1978 season but continued to play. His last action for the Rams came in their 28-0 loss to Dallas in the NFC championship game following the 1978 campaign. He left that contest in the second quarter with a shoulder separation. Cappelletti, a 6-1, 220-pounder, reported to the Rams' training camp last Store Hours: 10-10 Monday-Saturday/12-5 Sundzy The Daily Collegian , Monday, March 24, 1989-9 Columbia's Jeff Pappell and Doug Saputo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. This was a surprise for Cathrall who expected more from his doubles teams. "I had so much confidence in our doubles," he said, "I thought we'd win." The doubles teams did help to give Penn State a victory against Brown, but the real fighter was No. 6 Jon Whiteside.ln the third set, Whiteside came from a 5-2 game deficit to defeat Brown's Tom Ferguson, 7-5, and win his match. Whiteside's win split the singles matches three each, with Schillings and Schmucker also winning for Penn State. McAvoy and Whiteside had a rough time in the No. 1 doubles match, losing in straight sets with each set going into a tie breaker. No. 2 Lowry and Schillings had better luck defeating Steve Pifcuskuf and Ferguson, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Beckhard and Schmucker were also successful, winning in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6. Overall, Cathrall was pleased with the weekend results, especially since both matches were played on the road. "To walk into their environment and split with them was pretty good," Cathrall said of the Ivy League competitors. "The Ivy League teams are considered the top tennis schools in the East. We need to play them for exposure and recognition." 'II vggilighoi4sw iscount summer but after a week or so, he realized his groin injury hadn't suf ficiently healed, so Los Angeles placed him on the injured reserve list and he missed the entire season. The Rams took Cappelletti as their No. 1 draft choice in 1974 and he was used sparingly for two years before breaking into the starting lineup. His hest season was 1978, when he gained 604 yards on 174 carries and caught 41 passes for 382 yards.
