CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) If North
Carolina is to become an outstanding
football team this season, a victory over
Pittsburgh Saturday is a virtual
necessity.
And if North Carolina hopes to be
nationally ranked next week, a victory
over the Panthers, the No. 13 team in the
nation, is an absolute necessity.
Tar Heel coach Dick Crum and his
staff realize this, but motivation against
Jackie Sherrill's Panthers will not be a
problem. The Pitt defense, author of a
241-0 victory in its opener against Kansas,
is the primary concern.
"The Pitt defense is very mobile,"
Crum said yesterday. "Their defensive
end, Hugh Green, is an All-American,
and the other end, (Ricky) Jackson is
pretty good, too."
Combine Pitt's shutout of Kansas and
the Tar Heels' 28-0 whitewash of South
Carolina, and the evidence would seem
to indicate both teams are quite efficient
defensively. This prompted a question
from a writer in Pittsburgh on a double
telephone hookup about the possibilty of
a scoreless tie.
"I would doubt it very seriously," said
Crum.
With Pitt's offense snapping the ball 88
times against Kansas and North
Carolina's attack built around the
running of Amos Lawrence, points will
be put on the scoreboard.

the Oakland A's championship teams in

recovered a fumble and intercepted a
pass against South Carolina.
