"was nervous" about his first major
league starting assignment in five years.
And getting hit by a drive off the bat of
Kansas City's Fred Patek didn't help

pair Kansas City players to the disabled

last Thursday as Lambert exited the

Apparently, Lambert was struck in
the head with a beer glass and then
tangled with two or three men. Lambert
sustained minor injuries and later
received two stitches for a cut ear.
The cause of the fracas was un
determined.
Rooney said Lambert's tough guy
image heightens the possibility of such
encounters.
"He has to come to the realization that
he has to exercise caution when he goes
into things like that (discos)," Rooney
said.

When a tennis player is a four-year
starter and is still improving, that's
impressive.
Lady Lion Joan Backenstose is
doing just that. And she credits coach
Candy Royer for her progress.
"She helped me gain confidence on
the court," Backenstose said. "That
has really helped me in close mat
ches. She really took time out to work
with everyone individually. May
game has really improved here.",
Confidence has been the key for the
Lady Lions' no. 5 singles and no. 2
doubles player who has beaten all
comers, except those from Princeton,
a team that has owned Penn State in
women's tennis.
"Princeton was definitely our
toughest opponent so far," she said,
"but some of the girls down there said
we were their toughest opponent,

players steadily improving,
Backenstose said she is very satisfied
with her level of play.
"I feel confident playing where I
am," she said. "I feel I'm at the same
level with the girls at the schools we
play."
Backenstose started playing tennis
when she was 12, "for something to do
during the summer." But by the time
she was in high school, tennis became
more than just a summertime sport.
"When I was about 16 I began to
take it more seriously. I played more
than most people did, and I began to
think about college," she said.
"I'm not one of your more intense
tennis players," she said. "Some of
the girls play all summer in tour
naments, while I have played more
competitive tennis at Penn State than
anywhere else."
