Tarkenton retires, heads for ABC
NEW YORK (AP) Fran Tarkenton,
holder of every major passing record as
the quarterback for the Minnesota
Vikings, has quit pro football to become
a television commentator, Roone
Arledge, president of ABC ,News and
Sports, announced yesterday.
Tarkenton frustrated defensive
linemen for 18 seasons in the National
Football League, setting records for
most career completions, most yards
passing, most touchdown passes and
most total passes.
He will confine his scrambling this
season to the broadcast booth between
Frank Gifford and Howard Cosell on

Nuss and Malone and Byrne may not have the same
ring as Tinker and Evers and Chance, and Laura Nuss,
Deb Malone and Peggy Byrne aren't even the double
play combination for the Lady Lion softball team. But
yesterday those three meant as much to the Lady Lions
as Tinker, Evers and Chance did to the Chicago Cubs.
In a double-header yesterday with Cortland, Nuss
drove in the game-winning runs in both games, Malone
had three hits, three RBIs, scored two runs and put on a
sparkling defensive exhibition and Byrne pitched a
three-hitter in the second contest to lead Penn State to a
6-5, 3-1 sweep. ,
"I was really pleased with the way we played," Lady
Lion coach Pat McTarsney said. "We had six seniors
out there and were really hoping to finish with two wins.
Laura was hitting good today, and she helped us when

The first game was see-saw from the start. The lead

ending up at five-all in the middle of the seventh inning.
Nuss then came up with her first heroic hit of the af
ternoon when she singled in Diane Dixon in the bottom
of the seventh for the win.
The hit came at an opportune time for not only the
team, but also for Nuss herself. She could have ended
up the goat , of the first game after she let a fly ball by
Cortland's Lori Slaght go over her head in the top of the
fifth. The fly turned into a homerun that scored two and
tied the game at five.
"I never knew it was over my head," Nuss said. "It
was my fault. There was no sun in my eyes; it was a
little misjudgement. I was glad I got the game-winning
hit and was able to help the team then."

Nuss was also responsible for two of the three runs in
the second game, singling in Malone in the fourth and
scoring herself on a Cortland error.
Malone was the Lady Lions' version of "Charley
Hustle" yesterday. She sparked an early comeback
effort in the first game with a two-run single that put
Penn State ahead 4-2. Malone also combined with Penh
State catcher Patti Fogarty to throw out four Cortland
runners trying to steal second.
In the second game, Byrne didn't allow a hit until the
fifth inning before going on for the victory, but the
senior said she wasn't thinking about another no-hitter
in her final appearance for the Lady Lions.
"I just wanted to win," she said. "I didn't feel too bad,
and we were lookin' good."
"She (Byrne) tired a little bit near the end, but she
pitched five super innings of ball," McTarsney said.
"She did a real nice job."
