The Pirates got an insurance run in the ninth when Omar Moreno singled and scored on a double by Tim Foli. Left-hander John Candelaria, 2-1, scattered six hits over six innings in picking up the victory, his eighth in 10 career decisions against Atlanta. Mahler, 0-3, took the loss, yielding seven hits before being removed for a pinch hitter in the seventh. The Pirates staked Candelaria to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Phil Garner doubled, Dale Berra walked, Garner scored when Darrell Chaney let Steve Nicosia's grounder get past him for a two-base error and Berra came home on a single by Moreno. • CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING INFORMATION Ads can be placed in person at our office, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or mailed to Room 126 Carnegie Building (make checks payable to: The Daily Collegian). Summer Only. Evenings 238-4480 Baden an 'unnatural' star for Lion trackmen By DARLENE HROBAK Daily Collegian Sports Writer Bruce Baden isn't a natural when it comes to track. After all, the senior from Webster, N.Y. was just another average schoolboy runner coming out of high school. No college coaches were beating down his doors begging him to run for them; no one was even sending .any letters. So after high school, Baden spent a year as an exchange student in Germany pondering his future. In the meantime, he kept running. Not much, Baden said. But he was running. , Last Saturday at the prestigious Penn Relays, that same Bruce Baden crossed the finish line first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Bruce Baden who didn't even make the cross country and indoor track teams when he was a freshman at Penn State. "His strongest attribute for running, frankly, is his dedication," said Nittany Lion coach Harry Groves. "He kept going at it until he became good at what he was doing. He really paid the price to Pittsburgh inning and was hurt by Don Baylor's error in right field. Baylor dropped Carl Yastrzemski's first-inning fly ball and two batters later, Hobson cleared the bases. A's 5, Orioles 3 BALTIMORE (AP) Wayne Gross scored on a late throw by Baltimore first baseman Eddie Murray to break a seventh-inning tie, then Derek Bryant singled home another Oakland run to give the A's a 5-3 victory over the Orioles last night. The loss ended a six-game winning streak for the Orioles, and their only two losses in the last 17 games have been to Oakland. Gross opened the seventh with a walk off reliever Tippy Martinez, 1-1, and moved to third on a single by Mario Guerrero. Murray then fielded a tapper by Mitchell Page, but had difficulty getting the ball out of his glove and Gross beat the throw to the plate. With two outs, Bryant singled off Tim Stod dard. "The first two years he was trying to catch up, and he was always on the edge of doom sick and hurt, sick and hurt. I told him to ease up, but he kept going at it. And it paid off for him." . Indeed, it seems as if Baden is finally drinking some nectar from the fruit of his labor. The 8:42.5 steeple he ran at Penn was good enough to beat defending champion Bruce Bickford and a slew of other runners. What ever happened to the kid who finished fourth out of four the first time he ran the event for Penn State? "I'm not real fast," Baden said. "But I'm not real slow either. You have to have some speed to run a steeplechase. I think I get emotional, so that I can dig out the strength." Fast or slow, Baden is certainly good enough to compete at a national level in the steeplechase. He competed in the event three times at the NCAA outdoor championships and has been nationally ranked for the past three years, even though he was rendered ineligible last season due to a stress fracture in his Munson NEW YORK (AP) Thurman Munson, catcher and captain of the New York Yankees, thinks pitching ace Ron Guidry is "crazy and wacky" for volunteering to become a late-inning reliever and says the club should reward him finapcially for putting his career on the line. "If they're gonna'let him do it, they should give him the contract now he'll deserve two years from now," says Munson. "I think he's taking a great chance and should be rewarded for doing so." While conceding that "every teams needs a stopper" in the bullpen, Munson questioned whether the switch of last year's 25-3 Cy Young Award winner 'from the world champions' No. 1 starter the best pitcher in baseball in 1978 to short relief specialist until bullpen ace Rich Gossage recovers from torn thumb ligaments might have an adverse affect on Guidry's ultra-valuable left arm. "What if he goes out there three days in a row and gets a tender arm?" Munson wondered. "Tender arms don't come for any particular reason. Who cared about (Mark) Fidrych when he was hurt? "I don't mean just give him a raise. Give him the contract he deserves. A good relief pitcher is more important than a starter because he's gonna save some games, win some and save the other pitchers, which is a hell of a big asset in this game." I was running consistent 8:50's; now I'm running consistent B:4o's.But I know I can go faster. Your body gets used to the pace, and then you can push a little harder." The steeplechase, which consists of four barriers and a water jump, is by no means an easy race• to run. Baden said he began running it partly because no one else wanted to. But there were other reasons. "It's challenging, and I have done better at it than most people,"Baden said. "It's encouraging to do things better than most people can do them. At first it was tough to run, but I don't get agony out of running it anymore. I enjoy it." The steeplechase isn't the only event Baden runs. He was the fifth man on the Lion's cross country team this fall, and concentrated on running the two- and three-mile races indoors. His best at tempt indoors this season was an 8:44 two-mile at Cleveland. "You can never be sure what you're doing is right," he said, "but I'm sure my arm will be treated with a lot of respect. Everybody's saying I'm gonna blow my career, but I can just as easily blow it as a starter. If I'm gonna blow it, let it blow." For a pitcher of Guidry's stature to become a full-time reliever, even though only temporarily, may be un precedented in baseball history, although Allie Reynolds of the Yankees ended a long career as a starter by making 26 relief appearances and 15 starts in 1953 and 18 of each the following year. "I figured I might be able to help the team," said Guidry, who volunteered Saturday to make the bullpen his home until Gossage returns, probably in about two months. "I know what relieving is all about. That's what I came up .here for in 1976 before I made the transition from a relief pitcher to a starter." Guidry has an answer for every concern. He doesn't even care that he could be blowing any chance at another Cy Young Award. After Baden earned a degree in forest products, he still had a full year of eligibility remaining due to the fresh man seasons he didn't make the team and last year's fall injury. But sticking around wasn't a tough decision to make. "I didn't feel satisfied with my college career," Baden said. "I felt like I could do a lot better." He's already done pretty well. Baden's best steeplechase was an 8:40.2, which he ran in 1977's Penn Relays. It's the second swiftest any Penn Stater has ever run the event. George Malley holds the record of 8:22.5, which was an American record when he ran it in 1977. Now Baden isn't wasting his time. He's taking courses in photography, which has been a hobby of his since the third grade. His father, who works for Kodak, got him interested in the art. Baden can often be seen snapping pictures of his teammates at meets. He probably wouldn't object if his own season came out picture-perfect, either.
