    Flyers' Quinn happy
with recent road trip

The question by angry Philadelphians
#l;,Veeps across this campus with the
regularity of tuition hikes. Last place in
the Patrick Division doisn't sit too well
with the fans who cheered , the National
Hockey League club to successive
Stanley Cup championships just a few
v'ears back.
As
strange as it is to see the Flyers in
the basement of their division, one must
consider that they are eight games
above .500 (28-20-14) and would be no
worse than' second in any other NHL
division.
And if a recent six-game road trip is an
tidicator, there seems to be little wrong
right now with new coach Pat Quinn's
team.
"I'm really pleased with this raod
trip," Quinn said Sunday night after his
Flyers clubbed Buffalo, 6-1. "It's a good
start to where we want to be at playoff
time."
Indeed, any late-season road victory is
welcomed, and Philly endured that six
game stretch with just one loss. And that
lope defeat, a 4-3 loss Saturday to
Toronto, can be attributed to emotional
edge the Maple Leafs had after fired
4)ach Roger Neilson was rehired.
"It a nice sign," Quinn said, "that we
did get over Saturday after playing that
well and not winning. These guys
responded; they bounced right back.
They aren't afraid of losing, and that's a
fsitive sign."
,Quinn will cherish all the positive
signs he can find. He's the second man to
try, to fill the shoes of departed Fred
Sfiero, although he seems to be having
much more success than predecessor
Bob McCammon.
Vine -year veteran Bob Kelly credits
(Ann for the recent surge.

Men swimmers place fifth
k lt'he men's swimming team placed
fifth in the Eastern swimming cham
pkinship this past weekend.
4 We came in fifth ahead of Syracuse,"
coach Lou NacNeill said. "It was better
thin before and I am as happy as could
be: The standing was good for us
110`,ecause .of the low standing that we had
at the beginning of the season."
Freshman Al Berardocco broke his
record in the 100 yard and 200 yard
butterily - an - Che'distanceriiedley.
Snydet also did an outstanding
job," Mac Neill said. "After five and a
lady swimmers third in tourney
Diver Becky Binney's first place
finishes on both the one and three meter
boards and the setting of several team
records highlighted the women's swim
gam's third place finish in the Eastern
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
for women's swimming and diving
championships on March 1-3.
The Lady Lions collected 297 points
overall to put them behind first place
Pittsburgh who scored 500 and second
rewe Rutgers who scored 340.
Kelly said, "but Freddy (Shero) had his
own system. He (Quinn) came in and
used Freddy's same basic system, with
a few different options.
McCammon's problem, Kelly said,
was he tried to change everything from
the way Shero operated. Quinn added
some wrinkles of his own, but basically
stuck to what the players were used to.
The most recent result was one of the
most encouraging of Philadelphia's
season. But Quinn isn't so sure if it's the
best. ,
"I wasn't around earlier," Quinn said,
"but judging by the scores they ( the
Flyers) had some good stretches earlier
in the year. We went through the same
type of thing Boston went through. But
good hockey clubs don't stay in the
doldrums too long."
Probably the most encouraging aspect
of that road trip, though, was that it was
played without stellar goaltender Bernie
Parent. The 33-year-old netminder was
accidentally clipped by the a stick two
weeks ago and is out for the season.
The responsibility falls to Wayne
Stephenson, who missed two games with .
a knee injury and almost sat out the
Buffalo game before asking Quinn to
play.
PI don't think he (Stephenson) would
fool around with a game at stake,"
Quinn said. "I wouldn't have hesitated to
put Rick in at any time."
Rick is backup goalie Rick St. Croix,
who played when Stephenson was out.
But the 24-year-old lacks experience,
and Stephenson will have to be an iron
man in the net for the Flyers to get far in
the playoffs.
"The knee bothers me a little bit,"
Stephenson said after the Buffalo game.
"But my leg strength will increase as I
play more. The big thing was I got
through tonight (Sunday).
"It ( the injury) doesn't affect my
goaltending, but it's something I'm
going to have for two, three, four
weeks."
half weeks out of the water he did really
well. He won the consolation race in the
butterfly and broke his own 100 yard
butterfly record."
This weekend is the NCAA Pre-
Qualifying Diving Meet at Harvard.
Craig Brown, Pat McFadden and Bob
Ambrose are representing the Penn
State diving team, diving coach Bob
Goldberg said.
"There are 20 divers competing and
the top four will qualify for NCAA. It will
be a tough meet, but there is a shot for
our divers to qualify," Goldberg said.
"It was a good meet and we were
pleased with our performances for the
most part," coach Ellen Perry said. "We
could have been a little closer to
Rutgers, but everybody gave 100 per
cent,"
The Lady Lions will send Binney ;
swimmers Cindy Aungst and Bobbi
Millard, and their 200 and 400 freestyle
medley relay teams to the AIAW
national championships March 15-17 at
Pittsburgh. —by Sharon Fink
