Widens lead in Norris Division
Los Angeles blanks Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (AP) Los Angeles
goalie Mario Lessard stopped 26 Pitt
sburgh shots last night as the Kings beat
the Penguins 4-0 in a National Hockey
League game.
The shutout was the fourth this season
for Lessard and gave the Kings a four
point edge over the Penguins in .the
battle for second place in the league's
Norris Division. Montreal is far ahead in
first place.
There is only one game left between
the two teams this season. However, the
Penguins have two more scheduled
games than Los Angeles before play
stops.
After a scoreless •first period, Marcel
Dionne put the first Los Angeles point on
the board at 3:59 of the second period. He

slammed a 50-foot slapshot past Penguin
goalie Gregg Millen.
Glenn Goldup scored next at 4)10 of the
last period when he picked up a loose
puck and skated in alone to beat Millen
from 15 feet.
Just 59 seconds later, Syl Apps drove a
rebound off the board behind the net past
Millen for the game's third goal. A
breakaway by Butch Goring with a little
more than a minute remaining ended the
scoring. . .
Los Angeles failed to capitalize on two

chosen earlier this year by the BBWAA.
Wilson was a standout hitter from the
time he entered the major leagues with
the New York Giants in 1923 until he
closed his career with the Dodgers and
Phillies in 1934.
In 1930, the hard-hitting outfielder
slammed 56 home runs, had 190 runs

still stands and a .356 average. He had
a lifetime batting mark of .307.
Burleigh Grimes, one of the legendary
pitchers of the National League and a
member of the Veterans Committee,
recalled Wilson's batting prowess after
the announcement.
"He was a short man, only 5 feet 6

"He was hard to pitch to and he had
tremendous power. He was one of the
most dangerous men I ever faced."
Giles, whose entire career was spent
organizing and running baseball fran

served as general manager of both the
