Like rain clouds after a drought,
the Lion wrestling team is welcoming
the beginning of this year's National
Collegiate Athletic Association .
tournament 'a sure sign of the
season's end.
Only two wrestlers remain . from
this season's 2-11 squad. Sam Sallitt is
a senior and 158-pounder John
Hanrahan a freshman, but both have
their work cut out for them in lowa
this weekend.
, "I think it will be a good test for
both of them," said Penn State
assistant coach Andy Matter. "There
aren't any bad wrestlers in that
tournament."
Sallitt and Hanrahan advanced to
the NCAAs by way of their places in
the Eastern Wrestling League
Tournament held in Pittsburgh two
weeks ago. Sallitt took second place
in the 190-pound class in that tour
nament, while Hanrahan was voted
as one of four wild-card selections
into the Nationals.
"Sam has been there before,"
Matter said, referring to Sallitt's
opening round loss in the NCAAs last

"In the third game, I pulled Dave
Phillips to give Dave Mull and Mike
Gordon more setting experience," Taft
said. We had a few problems at first with
the play selection and Springfield
jumped out to a 14-12 lead. But Mull and
Gordon began working better and we
came back to take the lead to win the
match."
, "Army and Springfield was a critical
weekend," Tait said. "It now means that
we have a leg up on the rest of the
division except for Rutgers."
The volleyball team traveled to
Meadville to participate in the United
States Volleyball Association In-
ISternational Tournament this past
weekend and also won.

thinner than it was last year."
The competition will be much
stiffer for Hanrahan in the 158-pound
class, but youth is definitely on his
side.
"It will be a nice experience for
John," Matter said. "He's had a
couple of good weeks of practice and
if he gets lucky, he might get in there
and place."
Hanrahan compiled a record 'of 22-
10-1 in his first season at Penn State
and he's still at an advantage when it
comes to tournaments.
"The Midlands was the best
tournament •he has been in so he's
seen a lot of national talent," Matter
said. "He's won Greco-Roman and
schoolboy tournaments before, so
he's pretty tournament-wise. By the
time he's a senior he should be tough
to beat."
The Lions did not fare well as a
team in the EWL tournament,
finishing sixth out of seven teams.
Lion Dan Pfautz was upset in the 177-
pound class and will miss the
nationals while Bob Bury ended his
season with a loss and an injury to
boot.
"The Meadville Invitational is con
sidered the most prestigous in the East,"
Tait said. "They had top teams from
Toronto, Montreal and the the Midwest.
This is the first that we have been invited
and I feel that people are starting to
realize that we have a strong program."
"The team did everything it was asked
to do," Tait said. "It was a very im
portant win and the first time that a
collegian team had ever won the tour
nament."
The Nittany Lions had problems in the
beginning of the round robin tournament
as they split the first two matches with
teams from Akron and Cincinnati. The
Lions took the rest of the games to
control their bracket.

Panthers, Rutgers to face
Lions over the weekend
The men's volleyball team faces
strong competition this weekend against
Pittsburgh and Army at Rec Hall.
Pitt was originally scheduled for Feb.
21, but was unable to come up to Penn
State because of coaching problems. The
match was rescheduled for tomorrow at
7 p.m.
"The match has no bearing on the
playoffs, but can have an effect on our
seeding at the end of the season," Lion
coach Tom Tait said. "We will have no
major changes in the game. We want to
work a few different things that we can
use later in the year."
This is the first year that Pitt has
Robinson's double leads
Pirates to exhibition win
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) Bill
Robinson's two-run double in the third
inning put the Pittsburgh Pirates in the
lead and helped them to a 5-3 victory
over the Seibu Lions in an exhibition
baseball game yesterday.
The Lions, of the Japanese Pacific
League, scored first on a single in the top
half of the third and added their other
runs in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded
team to win the division. It lost the first
game and came back to win the second
game by a greater margin. Because of
the win, the Lions received a bye in the
first round of the playoffs.
The Lions defeated Meadville in the
semifinals.
"They gave us the most trouble in all
of the match," Tait said. "Meadville had
an odd style and rhythm that had us
stumped. Because the team couldn't
adjust to that style of play, we played
very tense ball."
Penn State lost the first game and was
trailing Meadville when it finally ad
justed to win the game. The Lions had
little trouble with the third game.
The Lions met Baca in the finals and
defeated it 15-4,15-9.

Army is coming to Rec Hall to meet
the Lions Saturday. This is the second
time this year that Penn State has gone
up against the Cadets. In their first
meeting, the Nittany Lions defeated
Army 3-1.
"We are expecting them to give us a
pretty good match," Tait said. "They
are a solid team with some very good
personnel. Mark Paslawski and Tom
O'Brian are both very strong."

walk and a fielders' choice in the last
inning.
Pittsburgh's Steve Nocosia batted in
two runs one in the fourth inning on a
squeeze bunt and another in the sixth on
a single.
Willie Stargell cracked the game's
only home run with no one on base in the
eighth inning.
Rod Scurry, the second of five Pirate
pitchers, was credited with the win.
"Dave Phillips had to be taken out of
the second game with leg cramps when
the score was 11-4," Tait said. "Dave
Mull and Mike Gordon came in and took
charge of the offense. They did an out
standing job while Dave recovered
enough to come back into the game and
finish."
Phillips was voted the most valuable
player of the match.
"Dave did an outstanding job, par
ticularly in the playoffs," Tait said.
"There were a lot of other outstanding
setters in the match, but Dave was
running our offense real well all day."
"It was a team effort to win the
tournament," Tait said. "The entire
event took about 13 hours and it was a
very important win for the team."
