Beaver seating plan delay asked

The Undergraduate Student Government Executive Council
recommended that none of the proposed changes to football
stadium seating be implemented next year in a meeting last
night with Bud Meredith, business manager of athletics.
"Basically as a group, we're not really that happy with the
proposals," Dave Haberle, USG president, said. "We'd be
content with the same seating system if we attacked the
problems in it."
In a letter to Raymond°. Murphy, vice president for student
affairs, Robert J. Scannell, dean of the College of Health,
Physical Education and Recreation, listed four problems with
the existing seating policy:
"It does not make effective use of seating capacity in the
student sections.
It creates a situation which greatly favors organized
groups to the detriment of the individual student in finding
seating within the student sections.
It creates a situation in which a student with a ticket
cannot be assured of a seat at a reasonable arrival time.
It creates a tense atmosphere at the gates and entry ways
as the initial rush occurs, followed by a prolonged period of
problems as students attempt to hold their seats and prevent
boredom for up to two hours while waiting for the game to
begin."
"We will have to reach final decisions by the middle of
March at the latest," Scannell said in the letter.
Four alternative seating methods, based on other univer
sities' systems, were proposed in Scannell's letter.
The first is based on a University of Nebraska system in
which a lottery number is drawn for assignment of reserved
tickets at a later time. An unlimited number would be given in
blocks.
Under the Georgia Tech system, a season coupon book or
single game coupon is sold to be redeemed later for a reserved
seat. An unlimited number of tickets would be given in blocks,
as long as they were in the same class.

• Next, the Michigan State University plan would sell tickets
on a reserved seat basis for the season, in a maximum block of
eight.
Finally, the University of Southern California sells coupon
books or single game coupons to be redeemed later on a
weekly basis for reserved seats.
All of the proposals, except for Nebraska's are based on
class seating.
"I didn't like that, in each of these proposals, students have
to get tickets every week, and they are relegated to sitting with
the same people each week," Linda Williams, a representative
for student trustee Dave Hickton, said.
"As we indicated, last year we put numbers on the ends of
rows and beefed up the usher function, but it was still a major
problem," Meredith said, referring to students not using all
the seats available.
"I guess it's a general attitude of students not to move over,"
he said.
Everyone in the stadium is allowed 17 and 1 / 2 inches to sit, he
said. "The stadium is very symmetrical."
Of 21,000 seats for students, only 20,500 are sold to insure that
students will have seats, he said.
"I don't think any way, short of having cops make people sit
on a numbered seat, would solve the problem," Dianne Taylor,
Graduate Student Association president, said.
Meredith said students were turned away at every game last
season because the sections became overcrowded.
Reasons , for overcrowding were attributed to freshmen
jumping the section railing to the upper classmen sections,
and people without tickets forcing their way into the student
sections.
Some suggested solutions were to install turnstiles at the
gate to prevent people without tickets from getting in, to install
bucket seats to insure that every seat would be used, to in
crease student seating but not increase the number of tickets
sold and to stagger times that different classes would enter the
stadium.
